The Pittsburgh Steelers now find themselves in a much better situation than they could have been in so far in this young season. After Monday night’s hard fought win against the Chicago Bears, the Steelers now sit at a record of 5-3, which is good enough for 2nd place in the AFC North, and if the season ended today, would mean a playoff berth in which they would be traveling across the country to take on the Los Angeles Chargers as the 6th seed in the AFC.

With the help of our emerging offensive attack, the Steelers are in the midst of a winning streak of their own having won the past four games prior to starting the season out with a 1-3 record. Obviously, our defense has done an ideal job anchoring this team so far, as we have had to rely on our defense to close out games more frequently than what the organization would like to see, but it seems like this team is starting to click together, more importantly, building momentum on the offensive side of the football taking the initial pressure off of our defense. It might have taken a bit longer than what this coaching staff had expected, but the transition seems to be happening at a prime spot in the middle of the season.

The Steelers host the Detroit Lions this Sunday in hopes of adding to their four-game winning streak. Obviously, with the Lions themselves being at a record of 0-8, this looks like an easy win on paper for this Steelers team. We all know the phrase “trap game” which the Steelers have had their fair share of the past couple of seasons, but if the Steelers are able to pull off the victory this Sunday, they would be going into their hardest stretch of the schedule as of yet with a 6-3 record. With the playoffs in sight, the Steelers would essentially be controlling their own destiny. A situation that head coach Mike Tomlin loves to be in.

Throughout his career, Tomlin has held a record of 26-13 during December/January football and will look to have the same type of success as the season begins to wind down. That task will be a bit harder to accomplish as the Steelers will finish off the last nine weeks of the NFL season by facing seven teams with winning records — still having to play our division rivals the Baltimore Ravens (twice), Cincinnati Bengals and Cleveland Browns (both just once). Pittsburgh is slotted to face this year’s #1 seed in the AFC Tennessee Titans in Week 15, then follow that up with last year’s #1 seed Kansas City Chiefs in Week 16. The Steelers will also face the Chargers and the Minnesota Vikings to finish out the season, so needless to say, these next couple of months will not be easy, but they sure will test this team’s toughness.

Not only will the Steelers be looking to clinch a playoff birth during these final nine games, but they also still have an opportunity to win their division, something I’m sure this team has not forgotten about. So far this season, the Steelers have a 1-1 record in their division and sit just one game back of first place at this moment. They still have yet to face the Ravens at all this season, and still have 1 game vs the Bengals and Browns still yet to come. You never know what could happen, the AFC North is arguably one of the toughest divisions in all the NFL, especially this season having all four teams displaying a winning record as of today. The Steelers have shown consistency these past four victories in a row, something they failed to do in the first four contests. If they can keep growing each week offensively, with a veteran quarterback behind center by the name of Ben Roethlisberger, there is no reason why this team should not be considered contenders. All I know, is that not many people (besides SteelerNation, of course) expected this Steelers team to be in the position that they are in now and the final nine weeks of the season are going to truly test just how good this Steelers team can be.
