Steelers Release Justin Gilbert

Had to be a punctuality/work issue like in Cleveland, along with what Thomas said. Everywhere else he proved he could be a good player. He shut Travis Kelce down in the regular season Chiefs game. He can now go hard sleep on a big pile of money.

Shame we even traded for him if it was known he didn't love the game. I've seen conflicting reports as to whether we owe him any guaranteed money or if he counts against the cap next year. The story making the rounds says his guaranteed money is voided and we will not count against the cap. All in all, waste of a 6th round pick for us and definitely adds to the need in the secondary.

I don't know why this is, but here's Ed's report on the zero dead money from Gilbert. I'd have to see the way the contract was written. It may also affect the draft pick. If we dropped him so early, we either are getting a cap or draft benefit. from it:

He will not count against the cap because his guaranteed contract was voided when he was suspended for missing meetings. The Browns have to pay his signing bonus and will count against them next year. We're off the hook. We would've had to pay his roster bonus on March 9 of 1.9 mil.

hindsight is 20/20
although this didnt turn out, it was high reward/low risk.
as bad as our secondary is/was, it was worth the gamble that a change of scenery might help him develop.

Pretty much. It was worth the risk in my opinion. We were desperate. No one knew Davis and Burns would work out so far.

I wouldn't rule out he is asked back for another look with a low cost deal. Will not hurt the team much to get a TC under his belt here, as well a camp body.

I'm all for the no cap hit and the stains paying him too. Like some have said, we were very DESPERATE at the time. Again, he may be signed back and able to contribute. I'd think there is some sort of rule of eligibility if we signed him back to avoid the cap implications.

Salute the nation

If you're going to cut him now, then cut Coates now and don't give him another shot during camp and preseason. He sucked worse than just about anyone else on the team after he broke his fingers and that is not a good enough excuse.

Broken fingers is not a good enough excuse for not being able to catch a football? lol

just like a pulled groin is not a good excuse for not being able to run? Can't give one player a pass and not the other. Let's see what he does in his second year.

Look at it this way. We spent a 6th round pick on him instead of the 1st rounder we potentially could have used had he slipped to us at what, 15 that year? He was a hot commodity going into the draft and the Steelers and fans were interested in him. I'd much rather lose that 6th round pick than him be our first round bust.

I would have, at least, brought him in for OTA's, camp and the pre-season. The dude got almost no practice time during the season since he was so far down the depth chart. Stupid move.

The problem with "bringing him to camp" was that he was owed something like a $1 million bonus in early March. They decided getting a longer look at him wasn't worth the check they would have to cut to him next month. Hard to argue with that given they've seen him up close since September and we can only guess.
