Steelers releasing Witherspoon

Witherspoon signed a 2-year contract for $8 million in 2022, with a signing bonus of $2,965,000. How does releasing him clear a full 4 million in 2023 cap space, when there's a dead cap hit of $1.4825 million?

Looking at the numbers on overthecap.com, he carried a $4M base salary this year that was not guaranteed. The prorated portion of his bonus is $1,482,500. So, apparently, they backloaded his contract and he received the signing bonus and vet minimum last year.

I guess the rumors of us trading him to the raiders didn’t work out… meh that DB group was really deep, especially at outside… he was always a candidate to cut due to his cap space… especially if they are signing another free agent at a different position

His base salary was 1,000,000 last year… his salary this year was 4 million

They have Wallace, peterson, Porter, and Pierre who can play outside I still think Trice is at best a long shot unless he shows he can play slot…
Kinda feel like all Trice has to show is that he can do everything Pierre does, only faster/quicker. They seem to treat Pierre like the tagalong little brother or the unwanted step-child.

Pierre does better vs bigger/taller receivers. When he has to change direction and cover the little WRs he gets tripped up.

This is my #1 Steal Pick in the draft....I NEED you to be wrong...
I mean he could beat out Pierre, and we could keep a bunch of slot capable S guys… but right now its a numbers game… the number of the most dbs they will keep is 10 total.

Six are locks
1. Peterson
2. Wallace
3. Porter
4. Minkah
5. Kazee
6. Neal

Of the remaining 4, at least 2 will be slot specialists.
The frontrunners there are
-Norwood, who also is a safety, which is valuable flexibility…
-Sullivan, who they pretty much signed as a slot option
And
-Dawson, who is a practice squad guy with rave reviews from the staff

Of those other two spots if Trice isn’t slot capable ( and he may well be… some draft scouting reports listed him as a safety) he would be competing against Pierre, who is a valuable proven and experienced guy and miles Killibrew..
now Killibrew sounds like an easy out, but again he is a safety and more importantly he is probably the best special teams player we have.

So basically trice has a better shot of not being a PS player year 1 than he did ten days ago… but he is still a long shot. I don’t know if they will be willing to have two rookies both playing the same role as their depth at cb…

I dunno for me the guy slipped due to injury. I think if he stays healthy he gets a spot based on film and draft stock. If he doesn't stay healthy he gets IR'd.

One thing you're forgetting that has been mentioned by the coaches and the player himself is that Peterson is slot capable and willing to move around as needed. That lessens the need to keep one of those slot capable safeties. And, it's not like Norwood has been stellar; even with his flexibility.

If Norwood comes off the roster, he is going to be replaced by another safety. They aren’t going into the season with just 3 true safeties and killibrew at the position…
If Trice is a lights out ST player, I can see him displacing Killibrew, but remember, several other st aces have already been ejected or expect to be off the roster, so it’s probably going to take a lot off to replace self avowed special team specialist Killibrew…

Trice will either need to prove he can play slot and has that versatility, or straight beat out Pierre.. and then the staff would have to be ok with two rookies in the top 4 cb spots…

He is a great prospect, but if all he can do is play outside, then barring injuries he is most likely to be a PS player… and yes, like Quincy Roche…. We well could lose him if he wants to go somewhere else or if someone has an open roster spot for him…

But then again he could be versatile and good and earn a spot this year… im just saying dont hold your breath

My bet is Trice gets IR treatment with mystery injury nobody sees happen after game 2 of the preseason and see ya next year kid

Would love to see him ball out and put a hard decision on the coaching staff tho, he looks the part

Thanks for the link. Looking at that list, Gunner might be the next casualty, for a cap savings of $2 million.
