Steelers select Dri Archer in Round 3

I would like to offer a different thought regarding Archer and why he was keyed on during the game. New player, limited use, very fast, so the browns think he will get the ball when he is in the game. They do not have to fear him to be drawn into shifting the defense his way, they just have to believe he will get the ball

Vader, I know you want facts, to point to and review, but watching the game on TV gives too small of a window to accurately see how putting Archer in motion effected the entire Browns Defense. I'm at the game and I have an endzone view. That D was tripping over themselves to get into position to cover Archer. It was the reason why the first screen to Bell was wide open in the right flat. It was because Archer motioned left and drew the center of the field with him, making the inside linebackers unable to get into position for the screen to be delivered. The TD has already been documented here.

Perhaps we stalled in the 2nd half because Archer was hurt, and we lost our ability to create mismatches? That may be a reach, but their D was pinning their ears back and rushing us when he wasn't out there.

The issue is that even at the game you can't why they are doing what they are doing. You can only see that they are doing it. IF they ran Brown in motion would they not do the exact same thing? Generally speaking when you motion anyone across the formation you are trying to figure out the defense. IF you have the motion guy going to the strong side and leaving nobody on the opposite side then absolutely they are going to shift. Especially if they are in a single deep safety set. He's going where the action is going to be.

And my original point stands. IF the clowns are more worried about Archer than they are Brown then they are more ignorant than anyone thought. Archer had 1 carry for 4 yards. Why would they be more worried about Archer who had done nothing in the game when Brown was killing them?

Very good point and one I hadn't thought of. Karma

Because - unlike you - they've done their homework on Archer and realized he could hurt them in a multitude of ways.

And leave Brown and Bell to do whatever they want? Doubt it.

There is no regular season homework on Archer. But that's why they having won **** since the 80s. And also why you agree with their horrible analysis. Tells me as much about you as it does them.

Roethlisberger might not have a tall receiver to throw to, but he had a lot of receivers at his disposal. The Steelers used an empty set 10 times resulting in plenty of success. Roethlisberger was 7 of 9 (sacked once) for 118 yards and a touchdown. Antonio Brown caught three passes for 85 yards when the Steelers went empty. Dri Archer was on the field during all 10 empty sets.

• The Steelers set up Brown's 41-yard catch-and-run on the second play of the game with a slight formation alteration. Todd Haley lined up Brown in the slot next to Dri Archer knowing Joe Haden would stay outside instead of following Brown into the slot. The Steelers figured the formation would put Brown on a slower safety. Instead, linebacker Craig Robertson was forced to watch Brown in the slot. Archer's outside release forced Haden away from the play, meaning all Brown had to do was catch the ball and set up David DeCastro's block downfield of Robertson on the quick screen.

Bringing it back. A lot of talk about Archer and his inability to translate track speed to the NFL. He is no longer returning kick offs and punts. Seems like a bust, but is it fair to call that after only half a season. Emmanuel Sanders would get raped returning kicks. He wasn't a very good Steeler, but is finding success in the shadows of better receivers. Just wondering if Archer has this "potential". Plus I really just wanted to bring this thread back to the front.

It would be nice if we could find a way to utilize his speed. I am just thinking with his height he might have been more useful in the Kordell era when he was throwing those worm killers, they might have hit archer in the hands.

Don't disrespect Kordell. It's "Worm BURNERS".

Get that jitterbug on the flats while wheaton runs a fly pattern and brown do a post route. If the safeties don't help the CBs then throw it long, if they do then probably archer is wide open on the flats with space to run

I have yet to see them try to get a match up correctly with the use of Archer. I think it's because there is no surprise, to his entering the game. He is also not transferring "track speed" to "game speed" very well. Currently, he doesn't merit the 3rd round pick, but then again, our staff picked him and aren't sure of his usage.

Salute the nation

Man, you Archer haters are ridiculous. The dude's a rookie and was injured. Injuries set rookies back way more than veterans. You really won't be able to judge him until after his 2nd year, at the earliest. We typically don't even start our 1st or 2nd rounders let alone a 3rd rounder. But, the haters will hate.

Yea, and the "he's too fast too catch" nut huggers are fine with saying how great he is after 2 plays in pre-season. I guarantfuckingtee you that if he breaks one or had broken on you nuthuggers wouldn't be wanting to wait until the end of his 2nd year. Of course now you do.

That's nothing. We had one dude telling us he was now a proven NFL punt returner after 2 preseason returns for 4 yards.

Wonder if we'll have another Dri v. Bryant thread?

One has an NFL profile, one has a Kent State one.

One has the size , speed and talent to play in the NFL the other is a scared midget

Bump, because we can't discuss this 3rd round stud enough....

Based upon what little I have seen, Archer seems really easy to tackle. He didn't look particularly fast either. Perhaps I'm wrong.

I had wanted Brashad Breeland or Bryant at Archer's spot. At least we got Bryant. We could really use Breeland though. He started for Washington last night.

I just love how pathetic you are for gloating about a STEELERS player under performing. Yes, I am disappointed with Archer thus far this season but it's not like Blount crushed it in kick return duty with his ONE for 15 yards vs the colts. I think we can all agree the kick return unit as a whole has been disappointing between the returns and blocking or lack there of I should say. Archer was only in one offensive snap and that was a play that was sniffed out from the get-go and I am not sure if he dropped it on purpose or not but it didn't matter because the second the ball was snapped the DB's on his side of the field just started shooting in almost as if they somehow knew he'd get the ball. Hmmm

I still have high hopes for this kid but I will admit at this point he hasn't done squat and they need to reconsider the way they are using him or just don't dress him and dress and extra O-linemen. After watching that bubble screen and the way the Colts just jumped that I wish they would have came back with a fake bubble screen to Archer and then have Bryant fake go out to block then jus stream down the field. Maybe they try it during the rats game idk but it just seems like they either run him up the gut or bubble screen him and that is it. Obviously, not working so lets try something new!

I'm still holding out hope, but he just looks like he's overwhelmed, maybe it's the speed of the NFL, maybe it's the position, I'm not sure, but it just seems he's tackled before he ever gets to full speed. I hope he puts it together, but the fact that he's seeing less touches as time goes on doesn't bode well for him doing so.

Joe

He had one snap last game and dropped the ball that was thrown to him on that play.

Personally Blount adds zero on our KR team. At least Archer may have the speed and wiggle to break one. I'm hoping it was a benching to light a fire under his ***. He needs to play with more purpose and fire. If we only have one KR back, I'd like it to be Archer, not Blount.
