Steelers select Dri Archer in Round 3

Playmaker. That's the term I keep getting back to with Archer. The Steelers were looking for - and drafted - a playmaker. It goes beyond height, weight, position et al, Dri Archer is a flat-out playmaker that can change a game in a split second in numerous ways, be it running, catching, returning. Can't wait to see him on the field. In the meantime, let the haters hate, that's all they can do.

Way earlier in this thread, a poster said they can'r wait for Archer to fumble a kick/punt return. They wanted to see this board lite up. There are going to be some Bone Head plays, from any play maker, but why would you be rooting for them (bad play)? Some here want failure, just so they can say they were right all along. They FAIL to see, that if their (failure) guy, does fail, so goes the team. I want success at all levels, weather I DRAFTED THE GUY OR NOT !!!

You're right.... you don't know me. I'm nothing like your buddy. This thread would have died back in the late 60s if not for the circle jerk club. They refused to let it go and just started posting non-sense to keep it going. So I might as well post as well right? Again, why is it ok for them to do it but not me? Like I said before, this board has become nothing but a group of rah rah click. **** um.

why are they a rah rah click?

one thing to disagree with people it's another to clump a whole board together....

there are times nobody agrees with me but I don't take it's me against the world stance.............

I think it is ok if most don't agree with you on this topic and if they all disagreed with me it would be ok too.

As it is ok for you to disagree with the majority.

One thing is a fact if you and them bounce continuously over a topic, a finger has to be pointed both ways.

Not just in one direction......

You come across as angry at times, maybe that has a little to do with the conflict?

I can understand some people being surprised with the Archer pick. I was too, but I understood it. Actually I think that they were interested in John Brown from Pittsburg State who was drafted earlier. I dont however understand the anger with the pick. I for one hope he is able to return punts along with kicks. I think that would be HUGE to have someone take A. Browns place as punt returner. I think that that alone makes him worthy of a 3rd round pick. Now if he can contribute on offense either as a rb or a wr that will be icing on the cake. I hope he has a solid career and hope people quit debating the issue.

Great post Slash, its not always who is right or who is wrong. Respecting the fact that there are other(s) opinions, besides our own, is HUIGE decency!! Thank you

Former Kent State star Dri Archer eager to unleash his speedy skills with Steelers
http://www.ohio.com/sports/browns/f...ith-steelers-1.500157?localLinksEnabled=false

Archer, the Pittsburgh Steelers’ third-round draft pick out of Kent State, is still getting used to all of the work and media attention that comes with being an NFL running back.

But he’s loving every second of it.

Minutes later Friday afternoon, the drill station to which Steelers rookies had been assigned had turned into a wild, full-fledged game of keepaway, and Archer, a 5-foot-7 running back, bobbed and weaved his way through a small army of screaming, flailing children.

They didn’t stand a chance.

The speedy Archer — also a track star in high school — turned heads at the NFL combine this year. His 40-yard dash time (4.26 seconds) was the second-fastest time ever recorded since the NFL began electronic timing. His time trails only Chris Johnson’s mark of 4.24 from the 2008 combine. CBS Sports deviates from the “official” time, marking Archer at 4.16.

Archer, a consensus All-American after his junior season in 2012, was the catalyst in turning around a Kent State football program that hadn’t been to a bowl game for 40 years before they played Arkansas State in the GoDaddy.com Bowl in Mobile, Ala.

“It meant a lot,” Archer said. “We ended up losing the MAC Championship but it’s more about what we did accomplish. We had never been to a bowl game in 40 years. To be a part of something like that really means a lot. More importantly, to be able to share that with the group of guys from the class that I came in with was really special.”

Archer led the nation in 2012 by averaging 9.0 yards per carry. He totaled 1,429 rushing yards. His 561 receiving yards were the second most of any running back. He returned three kickoffs for touchdowns, averaging 36.9 yards per return, the highest mark in Mid-American Conference history.

It’s safe to say that Archer is a versatile player.
Unique?

“Unique is an understatement, man,” said Ryan Shazier, former Ohio State linebacker and fellow Steelers rookie. “He’s just tremendously fast. What he does, you can’t get out of just anybody. It’s amazing what he does. Whenever you get the ball in his hands, it’s like lightning in a bottle. We’ve just got to try and get that lightning as much as possible.”

Archer hopes to provide a much-needed spark to a Steelers team that was 27th in rushing and in the middle of the pack in receiving and kickoff returns in the NFL last season.

Archer’s exact role is still up in the air.

Scouts had trouble agreeing on whether Archer could be an every-down back at the NFL level or whether he would be destined for a career as a change-of-pace back, similar to the Philadelphia Eagles’ Darren Sproles.

But Sproles isn’t necessarily a bad comparison for Archer to hear, since he has been a dynamic part of every offense and special teams on which he’s been a part. He was never the featured back for the San Diego Chargers or New Orleans Saints, but that didn’t stop him from being one of the most important.

“I’m not sure,” Archer said of what his role will be with the Steelers. “It’s going to be a big role, but I’m just going to do whatever I’m asked to do. Play receiver, play running back, helping special teams. Whatever they want me to do, I’m going to do it.”

Not only will Archer add a boost to the scoring attack for the Steelers, but his one-of-a-kind skill set can help a defensive unit by having such a special athletic specimen to practice against on a daily basis.

“It really helps a lot,” Shazier said. “He really does everything. He can catch, he can run, he even goes through the tackles sometimes. Having him be able to do all that in practice really helps us break down angles, fundamentals and trust ourselves and what we have to do.
“When you’re chasing him and really understanding the way he cuts, you’re not going to see anybody faster than him, so it helps you be able to read and tackle any other guy.”

For a player of Archer’s stature who attended what was previously a low-profile football program at Kent State, the odds were stacked against him in terms of a career in the NFL. But he has carved his own lane and is owning every second of it. Not only on the football field in Pittsburgh, but for the community and the kids as well.

“I’m living my dream,” Archer said. “This is something I’ve always wanted to do as a kid. I’ve always wanted to give back to the community and the NFL has given us all a chance right now at this Play 60 youth football clinic. We’re just out here having fun, doing what we love to do.”

Great post Tibs thanks for posting. Enjoyed it.

read that this morning, and yeah if he could come close to Sproles production we would all be happy campers. We shall see.

As I weigh back N forth on the pick. I am curious about his strength /bench numbers to see if some on the football field strength can translate/ pair with that blazing speed.

It is like a bad relationship as I am arguing within myself about the positives and the negatives of picking DA.

It most certainly was a roll of the dice as it has been covered the potential plus and minuses.

Sometimes a gamble can push a certain part of a team to greatness, and other times it leaves you scratching ones head.

Good thing is we will get to see first hand which way the pendulum swings.

Not with just this pick but every pick.

If this class contributes early it could bring good things, orrrrrrr the learning curve might hold the team back initially, we'll see.

Either way I am excited Steeler football, is approaching.

two of my Steeler bruhs are coming up from Florida and I will take a few day study break and hit the highschool and a St. Vincent visit as well...

I can't wait ! !

First off I'm not angry. I just don't mince words. You're right the entire board isn't the click but a vast majority is in the click. They blasted TMC and others for having a different opinion than them even when they don't spend 1/1000th of the time looking at players. They even admit they don't watch individual players. Hell most on here never even heard of Archer before he was drafted.

Listen I've gone rounds with TMC before. But I always respected him for doing something that I can't do. Same with Dobre and several others. I may disagree with them but damn, I don't stoop to the childish "well you don't work for an NFL team so you don't know what you are talking about ****". That's so ******* stupid it's mind blowing. If that were applied to every thread then the board has no reason to exist. Like I've said before, let's apply that to politics, science and everyone opinion on anything. It's stupid and lazy because they were getting their heads handed to them and instead of just letting it go they had to go there.

I don't care if people agree with me. I just hate what this board has turned into. If you don't agree in lock step with the Steelers then you are a hater. Even thought NOWHERE in this thread did anybody say they hated Archer. But that's the way it is now. You don't like a draft pick? You a ******* hater and can't say anything because you don't work for the NFL. It's ******* stupid.

I understand what you are saying.

And have seen this board go in every direction possible.

With few unfortunately losing their passion for Steeler football..............

I just do not necessarily agree that the majority of the board fall into the examples.

Seems to be more of a few repetitious posters throwing out those examples, more so than a majority... that's just my opinion mind you...............

I can also see why the draftniks get irritated with all the work they put in.

But most of us are long time posters either here or elsewhere, or simply have watched the Steelers for the majority of their life.

With most people we know we won't change their stripes.

Some can tweak and some can change their approach. I know I have over the years. With age brings experience and hopefully better outcomes.

But with a few it will not.

I just feel we can't let the few outweigh the overall enjoyment.

Of seeing our team play, of talking about our team.

If a person doesn't enjoy something, maybe figure out a way to make it more enjoyable.

For me it was not debating as much.

Everyone is different though.

Hell isn't on a larger scale that is what life is all about?

enjoying the moment

For how hokie it may sound, it is what I try to do............

Well said Vader now bring back your old picture! Some might think your a dick but I bet if they had a wife they would say the same about them.

perhaps that's why I haven't remarried......... ;)

Geez Vader, how much more bellyaching from you and Idioteque over TMC storming off and leaving the board? For whatever reason, TMC was uncharacteristically sensitive in this thread, as you yourself wrote many here have gone "there and back" with him in the past. We're all big boys here, or so I thought. Sounds like you want to implement some sort of "sensitivity penalty" to make sure no one gets their feelings hurt. There was nothing out of the ordinary that was written which warranted TMC splitting like that. We all post here whenever we feel like it, nobody's forced to do so. I hope TMC returns at some point, but enough of the baby talk already, it's over the top.

hahah what a *****. How much more bitching from you guys do I have to hear? **** me. Over a 3rd round draft pick you guys have done everything to keep this thread alive by bitching, screaming and posting total non-sense. I'm not implementing anything. I'm pointing out that there are a few of you guys that love to jump up and down like teenagers at a Justin Beiber concern when anyone doesn't agree with the Steelers. **** that. I don't know the issues with TMC but I'm sure he got sick of having to say the same thing for 1000 times to a bunch of guys who don't even watch football. But want to argue because that's what they do. It had nothing to do with football... it was just "the Steelers know what they are doing, you don't work in the NFL so you're an idiot" **** over and over again. Bunch of whiny baby cunts. WAHH TMC and that mean Vader don't work for the NFL.. WAHH they don't like Archer.. ******* babies indeed.

Well, that answers the question, a lot more bellyaching, and slapping yourself on the back on what a ******* huge football fan you are. And those who disagree with you are a "bunch of guys who don't even watch football." You sir, are at once pathetic and hilarious. That's quite an achievement.

I would like to know who he feels doesnt watch football? Lol. Like how would you know. I watch football all the time. Pro college high school and up to a year go because of my job schedule coached pop warner. I may may not watch all the film some of those guys watch on each and every player but if I go bat for a guy its because I've watched him before or took the time to check him out. I respect TMC opinion but I disagree. Archer doesnt have to be Wes Walker in the slot for me. Just someone defenses have to respect. Someone who will cause matchup issues for himself and his teammates. I think he can return punts and get carries out the backfield. To me thats worthy of his 3rd round selection. Like I said before I figured Desir or Bryant when we were on the clock. Was shocked then warmed up to the pick.

Yea, you're a regular Norman Einstein yourself. More bitching and moaning over people not agreeing with you and your circle jerk squad. BTW the guys I'm talking about admitted they don't watch football. So it isn't me saying it. Which means they are arguing about players they've never seen, playing on teams they've NEVER watched. Talk about pathetic and hilarious. But keep stirring your drink with all those straws. Nothing more pathetic and ignorant than that... but I give you credit for doing your best.

I'm not going back into this **** thread to find it. But there were several guys on here that admitted that they didn't watch college football and sure as hell didn't watch individual players. Which is when the "You don't work in the NFL" **** started.

Also to your real football point. ALL players on the field have to be defended. If pure speed was the reason defenses crumbled then the Raiders would be racking up hardware. Hell we have DHB on this team now.. you remember him right? The guy that ran a 4.3 at the combine... The guy that was going to be a matchup nightmare for defenses because he couldn't be covered man to man. He was always going to have a safety over the top... that guy. The one that now is on his 3rd team in 6 years. Some how all that speed didn't make the matchups all that tough. And that is with a guy that is 6'2 210 lbs.

Fact is that defenses aren't ******** their pants over pure speed. 3rd round picks (even late) are worth more to me than a part time player that can be kicked away from on kickoffs.

Wow! I cant wait till training camp because these pissing contests are getting old.

You know why we shouldn't? I think you are an older guy like me, if I have read some of your posts correctly. You are arguing with guys who are calling you dude. Like that little sniveling **** from the Obama Administration who when asked about Benghazi told the guy from FOX, "That was like two years ago, dude." Picture that guy, and that is who you are arguing with.

This guy reminds me of dwight hands of stone. Real fast but could catch the clap in a south of the boarder ***** house. Seems he has had problems with that for his entire time in the nfl from what I here on the board.

Very astute and 100% correct.

I watched some of his film back in the day and loved when the Raiders took him. I'm just shocked he is still in the NFL. He fit the typical Raider "speed at all cost" draft pick. I have no issues brining him in here because he's cheap and can be camp fodder. He was a huge reach in the first round.
