Steelers Sign Tomlin to Three-Year Extension

I think I agree but guess what? Had we lost games because of 'rested players' - Coach Tomlin still gets blamed.

I wonder if we can blame him for the atrocious game-changing calls missed by the refs???
This isn't about casting blame. The refs blow calls, players fail to execute, scouts get it wrong, the GM's draft busts, etc. We're all human and we all make mistakes. What we're discussing is whether or not Mike Tomlin deserves a contract extension.

I've been very critical of MT over the years, especially his lack of leadership and stubborn, borderline arrogant, resistance to change. He's a player's coach and allows them to do whatever they feel like until it gets too far out of hand. He rules with a smile and a slap on the *** "great work team". To Art Rooney II, He's the perfect Head Coach for his Steelers. He doesn't have losing seasons, he's great at press conferences, doesn't cause any drama, and it allows Art to follow in the Steeler way of consistency. Win-WIn in his eyes.

What is the alternative? You let Mike Tomlin walk? That's brand and career suicide in today's political climate.

So, we as fans get more of the same; a bipolar team who may or may not make the playoffs and almost certainly will not win a playoff game let alone a SB. But hey, look on the bright side, we're not the Cleveland....ahem...well....never mind.

Noll didn't have anywhere near the talent in the '80s compared to what Tomlin had in the '10s. So in your opinion, the Steelers have only had good enough players to win a postseason game in 2 out of the last 10 seasons? Nothing amusing about that.
Noll's biggest mistake of the 80's was not drafting Marino. He also had some notable misses in the draft; Malone, Abercrombie, Worley, Sims, Rienstra. Throw in a bit of horribly bad luck with Rivera and you have a talent deficiency. Bad personnel decision making brought down the 80's Steelers. Was that all Noll? Nope, but he was part of the process I'm sure.

That said, 2 playoff wins in 10 years is atrocious for this franchise and the talent they had. I'm not even that upset about the lack of Super Bowls. Nobody from the AFC was going to consistently get to the 'Chip, let alone win it, as long as the NFL was letting N.E. cheat their way through.

Look, I agree with a lot of what you say, but that is absolute, 100% bullshit. Tomlin kept him together and performing is much closer to the truth. Without Tomlin that guy melts down much, much earlier. You lose credibility when you say stupid stuff.
Seems he kept it together in Tampa long enough to win a ring... And then the Bucs showed that they are willing to let him go if wants more than they're willing to give.

However, I will agree that AB likely was a ticking time bomb. It isn't fair to lay the entire blame for the AB mess at Tomlin's feet. But here's the question. Does Noll have the issues with AB in that week 17 game or leading up to it? Of course, (again, in fairness) Noll would NOT have done well in the current prima-donna atmosphere of the NFL.

Different time. He took what the Steelers were willing to give. Part of his meltdown evidently is he wanted more from the Steelers and they were not willing to give it, to renegotiate. So the Steelers showed the same thing as the Bucs. The Steelers also gave him the money in his prime. I am not sure he is the Antonio Brown of 2016 anymore. It is a heck of a lot easier to let him leave now than it would have been then.

We have no idea the locker room of the 1970s or 1980s because not every sideways fart was reported. But there were some peckish characters on those teams as well. Read "Three Bricks Shy of a Load." We all know the story of Ernie Holmes and the helicopter. Joe Gilliam. Tim Worley.

These are grown men. The responsibility of whether or not they want to team guys or idiots is really completely up to them. If everybody listened to good counsel, this world would be a heck of a lot better place.

I'm also tired of hearing those bullshit excuses about the lack of a bye week and the Thanksgiving game changes. The Steelers still had five days in between games before they played the Football Team, then six days before the Bills, and then eight days before the Bengals. When they had the most time to rest, at the half they were down 17 points to a **** team who was playing their third-string quarterback.
Exactly and to quote the horses mouth "Excuses are the tools of the incompetent!"

He is the head coach so they will always get their fair share of blame sure they run the ship. As far as the speculation you touched on let us not just look at one season, sure that would be more speculative. But his whole body of works shows a pattern. A late season pattern that isn't attractive. Do you at least agree with that?
Yep, I agree w/ that...

So this debacle was Tomlins fault?
From what I remember the Steelers were sitting pretty that year, could have been top seed. This catch that was not a catch put in shambles what was to become a great end to the regular season.

I'm not following...this just proves my point. Unless you were being sarcastic???

He and Bradshaw argued enough on the sidelines. Thing is that those were different times and the networks never showed that type of stuff. As for off the field type stuff, it's not like those 70's and 80's Steelers didn't have their incidents. Again, the ones they had were kept out of the media ... mostly ... kinda hard to keep news of a Steelers player shooting at a police helicopter on the Ohio Turnpike out of the news.

Ehh I don't know, maybe not, but the overblown hysterics over it are just funny to me, sorry.

Probably not with the SB. But, that kinda goes hand and hand with the decline and loss of a franchise QB. As I expect would be a first losing season. Kinda low hanging fruit there.
Either way, I'm just enjoying the tears for the moment. Whatever the future holds is what it holds. I'm expecting nothing less than an 80's style walk through the wasteland. Anything better before we rise up again is fantastic.
I like tomlin, but I would like him better if he were coaching a different team, a team he could put his own stamp on. That will never happen here. The Steelers feel like a mom n pop business struggling to compete. Just when they figure out how to compete with the Walmart’s and Costco’s here comes an Amazon.com. When they didn’t sign Bell to a “fair” contract, they blew any chance of Ben taking this team to another Super Bowl. It was stupid, stubborn, bullshit, the kind of thing you see in bush league management. Instead of embracing change and trailblazing a new path foreword, they responded like they were being dragged over concrete.

For what it’s worth Tomlin, Haley and Bell changed the game of football for awhile, reenergizing the running back position. While other teams were sending “packages” in and out of the game as were defenses, the Steelers used a fast break“ no huddle offense with the 6-1 240 Bell toggling in and out of the backfield, matching him up against smaller dbs and slower linebackers. The Steelers killed the Nfl Defenses that tried to stop them. Haley, an understudy to Bill Parcels, was taught to be always be trying to create or utilize a mismatch. By utilizing a running back as a out wide by motioning him into multiple receiver sets, made the offense more flexible. But because “nfl doesn’t runnings backs what number 2 receivers get” Bell held out and the rest is history, it was over before it really started.

You know, who gives a flying *** whoses being paid what? Does anyone care? Does anyone stop to ask when they are hoisting another Lombardi? The Steelers didn’t have a 2nd receiver because they kept leaving to get paid! The coaching staff figured out a great workaround and Bell was talented enough to carry if off. But instead of reward what did Haley and Bell get? Fired! Haley is completely out of football and Bell might as well be. And Tomlin was left to clean up the mess, the AB bs, the offense falling apart, the defense that the Chiefs qb said was like playing 7on7 drills against. And the mess we find ourselves in today. We should be cleaning house. should have got another Super Bowl trophy, and Be cLeaning house moving on to the non 100m dollar qb era. instead we are hanging on to the faint hope Ben might take us to another. So fukin typical Steelers!

Instead of signing Tomlin again, Art Rooney needs to be passing control of this team to on another family member more capable in the dealing with change in this modern ara where “thinking out of the box“ is rewarded not punished and a modern coaching staff that can deal with constant changing roaster due to free agency. You have to be able to see these rosters changes as an opportunity not the end of the world. A staff that doesnt need a 100m qb to be 8-8 or a defense that doesn’t fall apart if an equally expensive blitzend go’s down. Steelers are the worst spenders of money in term of returns. There is nothing fun about being Steeler fan Anymore. Watching the late season meltdown and browns beatdown was only worse than watching the season before, which was like watching the ugly jacksonville beatdown right after watching the horrible New England game where gronkowski schooled us for the uptinth time that we can’t defend a tightend! This is stupid. It’s time For change! but instead, art just signed us up for 3 more years. Good lord...

Steelers are at or up against the cap yearly. Kicking the can is more responsible for their cap situation than anything the team can't afford. Sure let him put a stamp on another franchise that might give his lack of playoff success a shorter leash. A team that very well could end up stamping the envelope return to sender. I would debate that Tomlin couldn't be in a better position. On a team that changes coaches less than the average bear, Yogi.

Offer Bell a fair contract? Steelers offered Bell more per year than what he signed for with the jets. He would have played out the entire contract. Instead he sat for a year. Gave up over $13 mill by doing so. Then sign a contract worth less than the Steelers offered 2 years earlier. Then got cut.....but hey. He got his SB banked.

Outside of that one point, StuntManMike pretty much nailed it. As I've said before, When Dan Rooney died...the Steelers that we knew and loved died with him. Art is much like his namesake, a lovable and genuine guy, but he's not a businessman and more particularly, he's not an NFL businessman.

Tomlin is what he is. Average. I think with this likely being Ben's last year, they chose stability at the HC position. They KNOW what they have in Tomlin, and they hope that he can guide the ship through the disaster that is likely going to be the QB position for years to come. I have no expectations of a SB run, and expect to finish 3rd in the division this year.
He'll likely finish with 3 playoff wins his final 13 seasons. Basically mirroring Chuck Noll's last 13.

Contrare, Art 2 is a hell of a business man.

Salute the nation

That's probably the only similar reflection between the two head coaches.

Deffinately, Tomlin couldn't even begin to hold Chuck's jock strap.

PS Chuck didn't have the arguably best talent to do the least with.

I will say straight-up that I don’t think the team gets to another SB as long as MT is here, let alone win one. It is EXTREMELY likely that we finish behind the Ratbirds and Stains this season. F that 11-0 start, by the end of the season we were clearly the third-best team in the division.

I see a goose egg as well for even playoff wins over the next 3 seasons. That means that Tomlin likely sputters and finishes with 3 playoff wins over his last 13 seasons or roughly equivalent to Noll's down years after the '70s. Tomlin will finish a solid notch below Cowher and the shine will eventually lessen for even his most loyal fans.

My new hobby is trolling the Tomlin nut-huggers in the Steelers FB groups and saying everything he won he did with Cowher's players and assistant coaches.
I'm not wrong though.

I don't understand half of your post, do you blame the front office for not keeping Bell? They offered him more than he got in free agency, it's not their fault that he decided to hold out and don't accept what was a market setting offer for the RB position.

The fact that Bell And Haley are completely out of the nfl gives reason to the front office getting rid of them, they didn't shine anywhere else. So I don't get your contradictory post blaming the team for not keeping them.

Look I don't like the new tomlin contract, let's be clear on that but what does losing bell and letting go Haley has anything to do with that? Those weren't bad moves by the front office

Many of the forums or Tomlin nut-hugger groups can't grasp that the majority of fans just aren't that into him anymore.

Sounds like you've found a new favorite sport!

Truth. Just saying Noll did comparatively more with less over his last 13 years if Tomlin gets "the under" over the next 3 years and I'm definitely taking the under.
