Steelers to Sign Kwon Alexander

Steelers learned their lesson of going into a season and counting on inexperienced players to step up if forced into action. This move solidifies depth while at the same time still leave room for a guy like Robinson or Muse to emerge.

If Robinson really impresses then they can probably trade Kwon as soon a some team has an injury or finds out that a young player they had penciled in to start is not ready.

I love this new approach of of using every cent of available cash, being aggressive.

looks like the ILB group has a shot to be much better than the last few years

Most certainly indeed.

I see this as a very good move (pending physical) and hope it pans out to a SPECTACULAR move.

Salute the nation

Here is a fanblog scouting report from when he signed with the Jets.

This guy is likely just insurance against Holcomb not being ready for the season or his top backup. Holcomb is definitely the top all around Ilb on the team. Roberts fills Spillanes duties as a “primarily stop the run” guy. But Im not sure he is the guy you want in coverage… Muse is a safety playing Ilb and special teams guy… fine for coverage downs but not early ones. Robinson still hasn’t advanced past thumper, and Kwaitkowski is probably just backup material… you can make a nice two deep ilb corps there, but its all so specialized that one injury sinks you… with so many with injury pasts, tge extra ilb makes sense

Just like Spillane.

Personally I am not too excited about this move...
9 year vet that had maybe 2 productive years a while back..

IMHO---this seasons Miles Jack with les playing time.

More depth for more specialization on defenses. With all the running back talk, I saw some good points made that in the 90s and 00s, defenses didn't substitute like they do today so a back could wear down a defense. Now you've got at least 5 DL playing each week, 3 ILBs with a big safety sometimes stepping in, at least 3 pass rushers, etc. It keeps guys fresh and you can win some matchups this way, but a good OC will get creative and try to exploit these specialized defenders.

Meh it seems like the plan was to get a lot of athletic underachievers that were derailed by injuries and hope a couple are the solution…

Now I am not ruling out that this works, but Im also not ignoring that the problem actually might be that the scheme requires way too much for a mere mortal Ilb to deliver success
but is a coverage LB, where we have zero depth behind holcomb

Muse is a coverage Lb, he just isn’t going to stop the run… I think Alexander isn’t really a huge liability in either direction
