Likely because the play design calls for him to cut back inside and he's not a good enough runner to realize "Hey, I have a **** ton of green on the outside!" This is where you miss a guy like Conner who can actually see the field.

Another bad throw but terrible play calling. We can't run. Run, run, pass will not work. Our O line is horrendous. There were 3 or 4 guys literally in the backfield when McFarland got the ball on that 2nd down run. Don't even ******* try. Pass 50+ times a game and be done with it.
