There is no doubt Tuitt is a good player.

After two disappointing seasons in 2016 and 2017, Tuitt Rebounded to a quality 2018. But that wasn't quite as good as his breakout year in 2015.

The way he's being paid, we need another 2015 type of season from Tuitt or better. Can he do it? I think so. Will he?

I'd look for the same as last year. Tuitt isn't great but he's above average which on this defense is pretty good.

He is capable of playing at a pro bowl level. I'd say they over paid some. He has just been really solid.

I too think he is a little overpaid. When he is healthy he is pretty good but the key is healthy. Seems like he always has some nagging thingy going on. Maybe it's just my perception but he does need to play and win his battles. Cam has been playing good enough to make Stephon's job much easier so he needs to take advantage of that. He can and HE will.

I liked Tuitt when he was coming out of college but he definitely has not lived up to the contract he just signed, not even close. Hopefully he steps up this year or we might have another Woodley situation brewing.

With Heyward on the other side Tuitt’s job should be easier.

Woodley lived up to his draft status. Performing at the highest stage. His injuries and eating habits just shortened his career. Injuries could do the same to Tuitt but beyond that is where the comparison should end. Tuitt has been banged up earlier in his career and has been his bug a boo. His injury risk is there for the FO to see plainly when the next possible contract rolls around. When Wood signed his last contract those same concerns didn't exist.

This.

Plus, we have a valuable piece of insurance named "Isaiah Buggs". Nice way to stir up poop for nothing...

Woodley did very well so long as Deebo was on the other side filling everyone's focus.

As for both Tuitt and Heyward, having a big man between them most of the time would make both more likely to bring more splash plays. The 2 DL sets have to negatively impact both of those guys.

In referring to Woodley, I'm talking about us potentially having to move on from Tuitt and his big contract with a large cap hit killing us.

I liked the Buggs pick a lot. He stood out in the SEC and senior bowl. However calling a 6th round pick “ insurance “ this early in camp is comedy.

I'm not sold on Tuitt. I think a lot of his issues have to do with playing along side OverDurpee who over pursues plays and gets himself out of position too often. Jacksonville ran right at Tuitt in the playoff loss almost all game. That's definitely our weak side. It would be nice to see him get somewhere closer to Aaron Smith status

If that were the case Dupree would be lighting it up. I think they fed off each other and sure Deebo got his fair share of attention, but Woodley still had to beat his man. And did that in the SB when we needed a stop. Wood was a damn good pass rusher in his own right, it just ended much too quickly..............

In the spirit of making fun of you, again, please explain how 6th round draft pick, Antonio Brown turned out, as "insurance" so looking ago???

Here's the difference, IF, there is one...

Buggs' collegiate perfomance has been well documented. He was a force on Alabama's defense for 2 solid years.

Follow the logic and stay with me.

Cam is 30 years old. Tuitt has been just above average when he's not hurt. Alualu is older than Cam. I can go on, but I'm sure you're starting to see the picture --- if not, there's always finger painting...

I think a lot of talent on this defense is stifled by poor coaching. I don't think we'll ever know how good Tuitt can be, unless he signs elsewhere when his contract expires.

I do too. Cam Heyward tweeted all of the guys on the defense and alluded to the talent in place. This year we should have 5 first round picks, 2 second round picks, a third round pick, and two big-time free agent signings starting on the defense. Vince Williams is the only expected starter without a draft pedigree and he's developed into a pretty good player. I almost look at it what happened with the offensive line. Early on the Steelers acquired a lot of talent, but it didn't show on the field. They bring in the best OL coach in the league and almost immediately develop the best OL.

Dude,

AB was a rarity. Insurance is supposed to be something you can depend on. A sixth-round pick doesn't fit the definition of insurance.

Insurance means - a practice or arrangement by which a company or government agency provides a guarantee of compensation for specified loss, damage, illness, or death . There is no guarantee Buggs will make the team, and if he does he might not even get a hat for game day.

For every 6th round pick like Brown, there a 100 more that were are cut within one to three years. While I didn't exactly do the math for you, I can bury you with Steeler examples if needed.

Also don't misquote me to get out your Dan Marino won a super bowl mode, or this " insurance " business in the form of a 6th round pick

We know how old Cam is. If Tuitt goes Woodley on the Steelers we are in trouble. Like I said as soon as Ben has a noticeable decline, its time to cut cap space and find a real head coach who can re-build.

Has the Tomlin man ever explained the infamous 2 DL man set, or asking our LB's to cover WR's?

I gotta largely agree. Tuitt needs to put up an 8-sack season like Heyward has/does. That or we need to be stronger against the run. I think he’s a solid player, but there’s definitely more that should be expected outta him.

Just an observation, not a critique of your post. Wouldn’t most teams have a bunch of first rounders,a few second rounders and a couple of third rounders in their starting lineup? Surely we can’t be unique in this situation. I am far to lazy to look up all the other teams draft choice numbers in their starting D plus it’s beautiful out and the ocean awaits me. Bring on the season!

Not to my knowledge, but I think the Saints put a defensive lineman on a receiver when we played them last year.

Not necessarily. The 2001 Steelers had 2 first rounders, 1 second rounder, 2 third rounders, 2 fourth rounders, 1 fifth rounder, and 3 UFA signings (Washington, Kimo, and Alexander. The 2008 team had 5 players selected in the third round or higher (Clark and Farrior as UFAs). Last year, Chicago had four homegrown players drafted in the third or higher starting on defense (four key additions from other teams). This year's Steelers we're talking about 8 players drafted in the third or higher. We aren't even counting guys like Jarvis Jones or Artie Burns.

Think so? Bush, Edmund's, Burns, Watt, Shazier, Dupree, Heyward, Jones (gone but could still be playing), Hood (gone still playing)
Vs.
Ben, Pouncey, Decastro and I cannot think of anyone else on offense recently who was drafted 1st round and is on another team or could still be playing. Ben and Pouncey go back a hell of a long ways. Decastro not much less.
