I actually don’t think the NFL ever had that rule… it is thought it started when an announcer said that once touched by an opponent, the ground couldn’t cause a fumble… its one of those things that was misinterpreted then just caught on in public jargon…

I went looking for it once and discovered that it not only didn’t exist… it never was in the rulebook… or if it was, I couldn’t find any referenced change in modern super bowl era rules…

every game i watch, college and pro, i see QBs throw slant routes and the WR gets some nice run after catch. Not the steelers though. Why hit a WR on the run when you can have him stop on a hook and get tackled immediately after that catch?

It may not have been in the rule book but I'm old enough to remember when it use to be the status quo. iirc it was the Megatron catch non catch that actually got it into the rule books and they went waaaay overboard with the description of a catch. now you need both feet down 9 football moves a celebration dance and either hand the ball to an official or a fan.

Not only that but I'm damn near out of tequila. I need one of them trucks that drives itself so I can go to the tequila gettin place.
