Sunday, ESPN reporter Jeremy Fowler took to SportsCenter to give an update on the contract extension situation involving Pittsburgh Steelers All-Pro EDGE rusher, T.J. Watt.

“And so, if something’s not done in the next, say, the next 48-to-72 hours, he’s definitely going to be in jeopardy of missing Week 1 because the Steelers stay tried-and-true to guys needing to practice in order to play. He’s been out there in individual drills and things like that, but they need more.” – Fowler Files via SportsCenter

As mentioned in that quote, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin has always been a strong advocate of players needing to practice throughout the week in order to play on game days. With just seven days until the Steelers travel to Buffalo to take on the Bills for their season opener, the team remains ‘optimistic’ a deal will get done shortly, but because of how complex this presumably largest deal in team history is unfolding, no specific day the deal can get done can be certain.

Watt will look to be if not the highest paid, then close to the highest paid defensive player in the league entering the 2021 NFL regular season with this potential new deal (roughly around $25M/year). Right now, he’s in the final year of his rookie contract and is set to make about $10.1M.

We will keep yinz posted as this situation continues to play out. Do you think Watt will be ready by Week 1? Click to comment below!

Okay, I love Watt and have stated numerous times the Steelers need to back the Brink's truck up and pay the man, however, he IS still under contract! I think he needs to get on the field and play just based on that! I know he wants the extension done, but he just can't break his current contract with the hopes it will get done in the next two days - it should have already been done!

Fowler is right though. If Watt doesn't get pretty much a full week of practice in, he doesn't start and very well may not play at all. He needs to get in football shape so he doesn't risk a nagging injury that will cost him several weeks. He needs full contact at least twice I would say this week. Once and his playing time should be severely limited - maybe a third of the snaps.

Guess there is nothing else to write about.. every talking head trying to get there bullshit drivel out there to maybe be the “one” to break story or say see I told you….

If enough "****" is thrown,.......................... something will stick. Talking Head 101

Greed is a powerful motivator.

So with all the talking heads saying a deal is about to get done.....what happens if one doesn't? Does Watt hold out? Does the front office continue negotiations into the season breaking their long time rule? Let's hope we don't have to find out.

Wonder if any trade packages have come thru? I assume we'd do better than the Khalil Mack return(2 1sts, 3rd, 6th for Mack and a second)

I wouldn't be for a trade. Just to throw this out there in regards to your listing. I would look at Watt team is offering that. It would have to be a bottom feeder. Like picking in the top ten.

Fowler creating news out of nothing. Aditi would have made the statement if it was an actuality. She’s the local coverage for the PIT, CLE, CIN area. If Fowler would watched Coach Buts interview last week with his response as when did he expect TJ to practice for the Bills, he would have missed the big grin on his face before giving the standard response regarding the status of the contract extension.

You gonna change that avatar if he holds out all of a sudden.........

If we could get(or better)what the Raiders got for Mack I would do it....playoffs come around and seems like our defense just disappears....Watt included.

Butler needs to be replaced.

I'm on your side on this. WATT is under contract so if he doesn't show he is actually holding out. I don't see this happening but I do see him NOT wanting to put at risk himself for the 10.1 mil fifth year option he is to be paid.

I just hope Aditi is right and has her poop in a group when she says it's close !!!!!

$10.1 is nothing laugh about but compared to what he can make as a FA it is. The thing is he isn't a FA yet. So I hope(and sure they are) the Steelers use this to lower the asking price. That and their option to Tag him for a few years. Many probably don't want to hear that but that is part of the negotiation process. The Steelers can simply let him play at his current salary and tag him for one or two years. If he wants true FA he will have to earn it.....complying to the current CBA. That said.....I think as many have been saying a deal will get done. If not though I hope the Steelers stick to their playbook.

In all seriousness......the only reason a deal isn't finished is because of greed. On both sides.....ownership and the player. Greed is a *****.

Is it TJ holding out, or is it coaching staff making the decision that he won’t play?

I highly doubt he’s sitting on a couch eating cheetos

Guessing that most of you will have to get up and go to work on Tuesday.
I was referring to Watt and the Steelers. I thought that was kind of obvious really. Sorry I didn't clarify myself better.
