It is the annual debate. The games dont mean anything in the standings, but they set the tone. I dont care about the outcomes, but the first team and immediate backups need to look much more sharp than they have the last two seasons. Some turnovers created by the defense and some good drives, scores by the offense. Football is very much a confidence driven game. You could really see how the laxidazical preseason leaked into the poor start last year. The worst of it being the way they scrambled to find someone to play tailback. Brutal.

Who cares? The team sucks, the coaches suck, you suck, we are going to be 1-15 this year, blah blah blah

We don't need to win any of the preseason games. All we need is to get through them without any injuries, and with the first team putting together reasonably good performances to build on. Who cares if the 4th-string guys that won't even be on a practice squad in a month can hold it together against the other team's scrubs for half a game? I just want to see Ben and the offense move down the field with confidence, and then see some good things from the defense, and by the end of the first quarter or so (typically a little longer by the last preseason game) get all the starters off the field.

I agree with this. They don't need to 4/0 and they don't need to play there starters against the other teams scrubs to get the win. But, they need to feel like they have imposed there will on the other team.

should have employed some of those guys from the 70's as coaches, Greene, Lambert, Rocky, Swann, Stallworth, would have shown them some"will"

Preseason performance is garbage. Teams play vanilla on both sides of the ball so if we look great what does it mean? Nothing! Its only good to for evaluation of individual talent and chemistry building. While necessary, overall performance in preseason doesnt mean squat and history is chalked full of teams that look sharped in preseason only to be the door matts of the league in the regular season. Best part of the preseason games, IMO, is the second half of each game-watching bubble players to see who might flash some potential.

I'm thinking that we need to stop acting like we are the cool, experinced team that is above acting like how the four games coming up do not really matter - and try and win them all. Maybe time to start acting like a team that has not been in the playoffs in years.

I think we need to put the effort in, to handle the outcome. Our starters against theirs, our 2nds against their 2nds, etc.. Now if we can look somewhat good, doing this, I see us well in the season. Act with no effort and this doesn't really count, then a rerun of last season.

Salute the nation

I will take 0-4 in the preseason if the first team can execute and we can get out of it with no injuries.

exactly

or at least no long term injuries...............

We can't be happy losing all preseason games like we seem to do. I know it's preseason but you practice like you want to play and the preseason games are practice. So, we should expect to win at least half, if not more of the games and we should look for improvement from one game to the next. Going 0-4 or even 1-3 just doesn't cut it in my book.

Preseason is practice, like IRON says. Doesn't matter either way who wins, just get the timing down and don't break nuttin. The vets crack me up about preseason games, they ***** like libs at a gun show about playing a whole ..what..10 minutes of football ?

It will be good to get some timing down in our revamped no-huddle offense and hopefully some newbies on defense will get some extra 'game speed' experience so we can start the season relatively healthy and rarin' to go...as Bus would say...Pittsburgh style baby !

Here's the thing... the first two games, the key starters like Ben are going to go out there and get one, maybe two series of work. Then they're going to stand on the sidelines and shoot the **** with each other. By the end of the game, they won't have any mental or emotional association between what they did on the field, and what the final score was, because most of those games will be decided by guys that probably won't even make the roster. Games 3 and 4, they usually give the starters more work, and then you hope that at least when those guys are on the field, they're working well together, not making big mistakes and so forth, and they'll come out of preseason feeling just fine, even if we post an 0-4 preseason record. It's all about how those starters are working out, less about final score of some meaningless games, and they know that. Would they LIKE to win them all? Sure. Will the veterans and starters somehow be off their games going into the regular season if they do OK during their reps but we lose those games anyway? Doubtful.

I hear everyone about not needing to win them and we really don't. But, as I said, you practice to win. You practice like you are playing a real game. "The standard is the standard." So, why wouldn't you expect to do well in the preseason games?

If the scrubs blow a late lead created by the ones and helped by the twos, no one cares. But if the ones and twos dont get leads, it wont create the traction this team needs.

I'd like to see a lead while the first team is playing, then it would be nice to see the second team hold the advantage. Then with the scrubs on the field I don't really care much

I don't give a **** if we win them or not, I do, however, care if they sufficiently prepare us to come out and win when the regular season starts. In other words, as long as the first team offense and defense gets enough work to be ready, I don't give a **** about anything else.

No coach has ever been hired, or fired, over the preseason. There is a reason for that.

Right, but keep in mind that just about half the players on our side of the field won't be around come the regular season. They might "practice to win" and still cause us to lose those preseason games, and it won't matter as long as the putative starters aren't looking grossly incompetent. It's like there are really two games happening - the one where our starters are against their starters, and the one where another 40 guys on either team are fighting for two or three spots on the practice squad. We can win the "first" game while losing the "second" game and lose on the scoreboard and I wouldn't be concerned.
