Interesting article over at Grantland, which lists our starting skill position players among the slowest in the league. His methodology excludes players such as Shazier, Archer et al.

Well, according to him speed isn't much use in the NFL. Look at the bottom 6 teams in speed vs the top 6. Who would win in that battle lol

Oh well, we're right between Denver and New Orleans. I'm not worried

Exactly! I think the size / speed measureables have become increasingly overstated these past few years, as the draft has gotten so much exposure with the combine et al. I also think Heath and Ben (w added penalty for years played) brings our overall score down...and Bell isn't the fastest RB out there either. I am stoked we have plenty of speed at ILB and in the return game, for whatever it's worth.

I swear some of this **** comes from some dude in his basement between updating his fantasy football league, World of Warcraft and porn dumps.

These baseball analytics people are trying to cross over into football.

Have you seen our lumbering oxen on the D-line yet?

no wonder

need to have a line that can stop the run, and speedy backers to clean up.

Did you see the D-line bowled over backwards on every running play ? dey soff

and all those missed arm tackles in the backfield? dey weak

lol....sorry, Spike. Haven't seen a down.

Just looking forward to the season. Need to get Archer in the, everydown backfield RB, mold.

ok, maybe I am stirring **** up witrh thye last statement

And much to the chegrin of the fantasy football portion of the NFL fans analytics doesnt translate well into football. Football is about matchups. If I ask a stat/ fantasy person who is a better qb Manning or Roethlisberger they will rightfully say Manning. If I turn the question to You have to bet your house on a big game against a tough physical defense. They become a lot less sure.

Big Ben is the man, but you dont have to be a FF geek to think that Peyton is a better QB than BB

Team speed is necessary for success in the NFL. Its how you derive the formula for judging? We definitely upgraded at several positions, just for the need for speed. Their method is flawed, but it really doesn't mater. No one can beat Archer.

Salute the nation

I would be more interested to see how each positional grouping compares, not the whole team like this.

RB's, WR's, TE's, OL, DL, LB's and DB's

Heyward can run with the best of them, Spikey...and please point out any fleet-footed nose-tackles around the league.

No question, throughout the season against average defenses Manning is by far better and clearly more consistent. But then I ask you, against a great defense that is physical and can cover, who do you want behind centre? I'll take Ben. He gives you a punchers chance.

Article:

I decided to focus on skill-position players and the guys who stop them. I took each NFL team and grabbed 10 players from each: their likely starters at quarterback (1), running back (2), wide receiver (2), tight end (1), cornerback (2), and safety (2). I used a player’s 40 time from the combine when available, and when one wasn’t, I used that player’s pro day

Looks like a small sampling to me. And our starters are not yet completely etched in stone at this point in some positions, where would a guy like Tuitt fit into the equation for example, he's been timed as low as the 4.8 range and is competing for the starting position. Why should so-called non skilled positions be excluded?
