Everytime I think I have NFL rules figured out. SF returner bobbles punt. Then accidentally kicks it into his own endzone from about the 10. Picks it up in the enzone and is tackled. Colts players make safety sign. No. Touchback. How?

That was what I was saying last week. Nfl rules will vary game to game/weekly

Ok I get if he muffed it off his hands as he tried to catch. He kicked the ball from the 10. Honestly if no one is immediately on you and it's inside the 10 you might as well knock it in the endzone fall on it and take it at the 20.

You're getting the rule confused with kickoffs. If he touched it the same way on a kickoff, he'd have to run it out of the EZ.
I’ll agree with ya here.

But it still raises the question on rules/officiating. Especially in prime time games

I didn't even have that big of a problem with it not being a safety but there is no way they are getting that ball at the 20 if he doesn't kick the ball 7 to 10 yards from the goalline. At minimum it should go to the point he kicked it.

Quoted for the truth. Jeez Paul and I thought Canadian rules were weird.
Can't lie .......I don't even watch anymore ........... Duck is now a REDBLACK ..... wonder if he will see some playing time this year ....

I don't know .... I do miss the late 70's and early 80's for CFL .... since that time the rule changes leave me stale

For a league the size and magnitude of the NFL ........ you would think they would invest in education programs to create well versed officiating crews that are consistent for the most part.
I have a client who Refs University games here in Ontario ........ talking to him .....seems like the biggest concern is bitching about having to show up early to games because of covid protocols and not getting paid for it ......... not much concern about the level or quality as a whole

I watch CFL on my deck in the summer. I don't like baseball. Hockey went late this year but that is a one off. I go to one Riders game a year. It's a good drunk.

That's the rule but I agree, the returner screwed up and shouldn't benefit from it.

Barry Foster?

This year is a year of mediocracy except for maybe Winnipeg

The NFL is an ever changing entity that reserves the right to make up **** on the fly.........

So, litterally the NFL is ruled by "fly ****"

Now I've got it figured out

Saute the nation

New York Islanders. Child of the 80s. Been a long road but interesting to cheer for a team that is WELL coached compared to one that is not.
sad to hear about Mike Bossy dude was fun to watch
I have customers that are related to John Tonelli who grew up nearby
......... yeah Al Arbour was a great coach and I think Trotz is as well

Tonelli was my favorite player. I've always liked role players who stepped up consistently. Heath Miller type players.

On a punt you need possession. The returner never had possession, even kicking it wan't intentional, it just happened. He's lucky to have gotten possession in the EZ. But on a KO, this would have been a Safety. Punts are different.

Didn't a number of years ago, Steelers/Chargers, a punt hit Weddle in the head, bounced off his helmet and the Steelers recovered?

I don't know if it was Weddle but I was at a game there in '04 where the returner muffed the punt to the Steelers cover man. Because it didn't touch the ground they ruled the ball was retained by San Diego. It was Harrison's first start and oddly I was in Pittsburgh vs. TBay for his return to the Steelers.

I remember the muffed punt that fell out of the punt returners hands and knocked it right at our guy who recovered. We didn't retain possession because the muffing player has to have a chance to catch it again before it hits the ground, so he retained possession...
