Thats a very odd rule

OK...AFC playoff game in 2008, Chargers/Steelers...I found it on Youtube...Steelers punt, now Weddle is blocking, but the punt hits him in the helmet, and the Steelers (William Gay) grab it. They run it into the endzone, but they can't advance it, but they can recover it. Is this allowed because Weddle wasn't the returner, but a blocker?

You can't advance a muffed punt. You have to block it to return it for a TD.

Right, but the original discussion about recovery of a fumbled punt? The theory was that since the returner never possessed the ball it couldn't be a fumble. Well, Weddle never possessed the ball.

I'm not arguing with anybody, just trying to figure out the rule.

a muffed punt is different than a punt touching another player on the receiving team.

No wonder the refs are so inconsistent. Again, not arguing with you, but that just makes no sense to me. Make it easier on the refs...if they touch it, anyone, and it gets away it can be recovered.

Coolie hit it.

A muffed punt becomes a live ball AFTER it touches the ground. You just can't get in the way of the returner trying to secure the muff UNTIL it touches the ground.

Didn't they actually call a penalty on the Steelers for not allowing a fair catch on that?

No...If I wasn't so technology simple, I'd post a video of the highlights. Look it up on Youtube. Title is "Chargers vs Steelers 2008 AFC Divisional." The video is 6:20, and it is around the 3:30 mark of the video.
