The Climate Change Thread

Feel free to ignore the science and bury your head all you want, OFTB. Nobody will hold it against you, besides perhaps your kids and grandkids. 🤷‍♂️
Stop talking about folks families. Not cool at all.

They’ll be fine.
If all emissions on the planet would cease today nothing would change for millenniums. The planet will continue to warm and the earth would adapt.
It would take 10,000 years for the atmosphere to return to its pre Industrial Revolution levels if all emissions were to cease today,

As well you can feel free to ignore the fact that climate change became a convenient and covert way to of carrying Obamas and the Progressives vision of the global distribution of wealth.

As always, the truth is out there, likely somewhere in between the two extremes regarding Climate Change.

My guttural reaction is against MAGAs whimsically claiming it's all a hoax and bullshit, and dismissing the science - and the real-world realities we're seeing and experiencing - with a wave of their hand. Not saying you're doing this, just a general statement regarding the sentiment on this board, and in this thread, specifically.

Like most things liberals seize on, they take a grain of truth, exaggerate it, pummel us over the head with it at every turn, blame all of the world's ills on it and refuse to even consider any dissenting points of view. For example, if you don't want grown men showering their boners in locker rooms with little girls, that means you want to genocide transpeople.

Many here have been correct in noting the Global Warming hoax since well before MAGA or even the Tea Party

We get it, tibs, climate change is real and you feel superior for pointing it out. Ok? Now what? What should we start doing to bring down the temperature of the planet? What's your solution? You dont have a viable answer so you just respond with sarcasm. Burn baby, burn.

It's currently 109 degrees outside my window. That's never ever happened in Phoenix before. Oh, wait I just realized that it's July.
Same as when I was a kid in AZ in the 60s and 70s.

And my parents in the 40s and 50s.

And my grand parents in the teens and 20s.

It is weather

It's the weather. It's always been the weather / change of seasons.

I don't know any of you personally, but I am starting to increasingly feel sorry for you.

And this chart, while covering a span of 22,000 years, is from five years ago. What's happened since?

Global warming has worsened since 2021 due to record-breaking greenhouse gas levels, accelerating ocean heat, and more intense extreme weather events. Global surface temperatures have continued to break historical records, with recent years ranking among the hottest in human history. Carbon dioxide and methane concentrations in the atmosphere have climbed to unprecedented highs, trapping more heat. According to World Meteorological Organization, “Greenhouse gas concentrations, sea level rise, ocean heat and acidification have all broken records.” The amount of heat stored in the world's oceans reached new record levels, which fuels stronger storms and marine heatwaves. Arctic and Antarctic sea ice remain well below average as polar regions continue to warm faster than the rest of the planet. Destructive floods, intense heatwaves, and severe droughts have grown more frequent and intense globally.

If it's the weather, as so many here suggest, well, carry on, at your own peril.

Honest question. If all of what you believe is true, do you honestly believe that killing all the cows, making everyone drive electric cars and turning the electrical grid over to windmills and solar will cure all of the world’s ills in regards to climate change? Maybe we should murder a couple billion people. It would certainly reduce the planet’s carbon footprint. What is the solution?

I’ll say this. There’s a lot of people out there trying to dictate what needs to be done to combat climate change. My suspicion is that once it’s implemented and their lives dramatically change, they will sing a much different tune because I feel like these same people believe that others need to change THEIR lives, as long as it isn’t at the expense of their own.

Here is the situation currently on the other side of the pond.

Unprecedented, massive wildfires have spread across France, Spain, and other parts of Europe, with towering walls of flame consuming huge areas of land, causing death and destruction in its wake.

Hungary, with several major rivers like the Danube and the Tisza, along with boundless natural springs, has always been considered a "safe haven" from climate change, Yet here we are, experiencing unprecedented drought, akin to what you'd see in Africa. The Paks Nuclear Power Plant, cooled by the Danube, has shut down for the first time ever in over two decades /edit... in over 44 years! / due to water shortage in the Danube used for cooling the plant. That plant, btw, powers up to 50% of the country. It's the same across Europe, from Germany down to Spain. Today, water pressure has dropped across Hungary like I've never seen it before. We had no water for hours in Budapest, for the first time ever, literally ever, in modern times. Major companies have shut down operations, Tesco and other large retailers and factories, shut down their cooling units, to save electricity.

You can smirk, and chuckle, and rub your bellies with glee, but this is not "just the weather" like our forefathers experienced.

I'm not here to convince you of anything. We're all adults, everyone can make their own assumptions. But I will say this. Reading this board, and a thread like this, I think a whole lot of you are wildly off the mark when it comes to climate change, and global warming. But keep the wisecracks and memes coming. Keep thinking this is somehow about you, and American politics. I'm sure it helps, on a psychological level, to keep the existential dread at bay. So I understand where you're coming from, seeing how many of you willingly sink your heads into the sand, and wish this all away.

Ho long have we had instruments to actually track weather? 130 years? 150? Not that long at all

Trust the science. It's all we have to lean on.

Scientists reconstruct temperatures from thousands of years ago using three main types of evidence:

Ice Cores
  • Fossil Air: Deep ice sheets in Greenland and Antarctica have layers built up over hundreds of thousands of years.
  • Chemical Signatures: Scientists drill these cores and measure the ratio of oxygen isotopes (¹⁸O to ¹⁶O) in the trapped air bubbles, which changes predictably based on how warm or cold the planet was when the snow fell.

Ocean and Lake Sediments
  • Shell Chemistry: Tiny marine organisms called foraminifera die and settle on the ocean floor in chronological layers.
  • Temperature Records: The chemical composition of their calcium carbonate shells directly reflects the water temperature of the ocean at the time they were alive.

Tree Rings and Corals
  • Growth Rates: Tree rings (dendroclimatology) and coral skeletons grow at different speeds and densities depending on local climate conditions.
  • Cross-Verification: These provide highly precise, year-by-year temperature tracking for the more recent thousands of years on the chart.

Tibs, Sarge didn't ask you for more proof of Climate Change. He asked, as I have earlier, simply, if you had a solution. I don't believe he is smirking and suggesting it's just weather. And let's say for the sake of argument or I should say to avoid argument, everything you claim is true. NOW WHAT? You have no reasonable answer to that question because their is no reasonable answer. If this planet's climate is going to change to the point of being uninhabitable then we will all die off and become another chapter in Earth's lengthy history.

If we could simply reach some sort of agreement that Climate Change is a real, dire, prevalent danger, we could at least overcome political divides and get scientists on board in how to proceed. I'm no scientist, I don't have any answers, but it boils my blood when an entire political movement like MAGA, with Trump in the lead, is claiming none of this is true, that none of this is happening, that we are not to believe our own eyes. Like it's a big ******* joke to so many, on that side of the political spectrum stateside.

As far as what the solutions are, who the **** knows. My sense is it may be too late to turn things around. Maybe if a guy like Elon Musk wasn't so infatuated with abandoning Earth for Mars, but used his resources and know how into fixing this, we'd be a bit ahead of the curve. I simply don't know what the answer is, and I have no real-world solutions of my own. I do know that ignorance is most definitely not bliss, when it comes to this issue.

I think it is a hoax.

In the 70s it was global cooling

It's actually both, affecting year-round weather patterns in an unprecedented way. But hey, whatever rocks your boat, man.

You believe what you believe and I will believe what I believe. Go steelers!

You believe what you believe and I will believe what I believe. Go steelers!

It's a bit past the point of what I believe or don't believe on a theoretical plane, seeing the real-world situation around the globe. It may have been the case five, ten years ago, but it seems we've crossed the Rubicon. Regardless, yes, Go Steelers!
