The continuing incompetence of Mike Tomlin

The one thing I will say about Tomlin's approach that over-depends on turnovers is that his teams usually do force a lot of turnovers throughout the season.

He does kind of "walk the talk" in that regard, and it's the biggest reason his teams still manage to win as much as they do, despite all the other issues.

The problem is the splash comes in bunches and there is going to be games where you're going to need to stop teams with just good tackling, coverages and schemes, and the Steelers just don't do any of that consistently anymore.

It's obvious Tomlin meddles a lot with the offense as well, unless one believes it's a coincidence we've been seeing the same holes in the middle of the Steelers passing charts since Ben's last couple years at QB.

I'm not sure exactly how good of an OC Arthur Smith is, but I'm pretty confident he's better than what he's essentially been allowed to be with the Steelers.

People speculate about Rodgers having regrets after apparently drinking the Tomlin kool-aid from the outside, and I often wonder the same about Smith.

I'm sure he had options after he was fired by the Falcons, given the success he had as the Titans OC.

Yeah always felt Rodgers was a bit of a fanboy of the Tomlin mystique and I bet he feels a bit different now.

You are not getting rid of everyone over 30. Some of those contracts are not moveable. It's a rebuild. They need to rebuild. But you have to start with a new culture. One where you play a style conducive to the last 10 plus years.

Outside of Watt, I think the Steelers could clean house of current 30+ year olds.

Aaron Rodgers - UFA
Cam Heyward - $14.25 million cap savings if cut ($4.9 million dead money)
Darius Slay - UFA
Iaac Seumalo - UFA
Andrus Peat - UFA
TJ Watt - not going anywhere
Jalen Ramsey - $19.5 million cap savings if cut
Jonnu Smith - $7 million cap savings if cut ($3.9 million dead money)
Mason Rudolph - $3 million cap savings if cut ($1.6 million dead money)
Jabrill Peppers - UFA
Chuck Clark - UFA

Didn’t lead off about his vaunted defense or his offense but diverted away from it. Hence the con man analogy.

I listen to Madden every day on the way home, he's not a home that's for sure, and he's been crushing Tomlin for years, unlike the other homer's who are just now coming around.

I don’t know why it’s taken so long for things to click for everyone else—fans included. This year is nothing new, they just didn’t have TJ Watt to mask their problems anymore.

The national media is hilarious with this, thinking this is the first time in years the Steelers have had issues. Maybe the “all in” expectations is what did the trick.
 
Why is anybody surprised by the staggering incompetence of the current rendition of the Steelers? Did we miss the last five games of 2024, or the semi-annual playoff ***-raping of the past decade? Tomlin's fingerprints are all over this defense and have been for more than a decade as we watched Tim Tebow throw for 316 yards and Blake Bortles look like Dan Marino.

Until the cause is addressed, the team will waste massive amounts of time and money treating the symptoms (inability to stop the run, poor to non-existent pass defense in the middle of the field, refusal to throw to the middle of the field on offense, inability to run the ball consistently).

I have no clue why it's taken so long, and the funniest thing is alot of fans first blamed Fichtner, then blamed Ben for making Tomlin hire Fichtner, then blamed Ben for holding Canada back, then blamed Butler, then blamed Canada after Ben retired, then Colbert, it's been everyone but Tomlin, eventhough the offense has looked the same for the past 8 seasons, and the defense has been trash in the post season since 2016.
The national media was talking how great Tomlin was last season, then he some how received coach of the year votes.

Keeanu Benton playing nose tackle just doesn't make sense. The Steelers drafted him for his pass-rushing upside, because his scouting report basically said he isn't stout in the middle against the run. In other words, he's not a guy who's going to anchor the middle of the defense. That's fine.

Instead, I am watching the Bills gash the Steelers as Yahya Black is playing on the end. Black is a massive space eater. He's a run-stopper only and a player who should be on the interior anchoring the defense.

This is a head scratcher to me as well. Black is better suited to clog the middle, and Benton on the end. I think Black has at least 20 lbs on Benton. We need to get Harmon in there when he is healthy again. You can't keep Black and Harmon on the sidelines. Heck, go to 4 DL before you only put 2 on the field. 4 DL with Watt and Highsmith/Herbig to rush the passer, or one to drop into a zone cover spot. Any way you slice it, 2 DL just does not work very often.

I think it's more like 30-40 lbs on Benton. It's not a knock on Benton, play these guys where they fit.
 
ALL the ESPN talking heads are saying this morning, "It's time for Tomlin and the Steelers to 'mutually part ways'."
They're also saying 20 teams will line up for Tomlin's services, but he won't go to any of the other 3 teams in AFCN out of respect to the Rooneys.
The GREATEST thing to happen to Pittsburgh is if the Steelers and Tomlin do part ways and he does go to another AFCN team.
I just want him gone at this point.

Owner, Coaching Staff, maybe GM ( I'd like to see Khan with someone who can actually utilize the players the scouting department and GM gives them, since Tomlin can't develop talent ).
 
I think Kahn stays. If Rooney does anything, Tomlin and the entire coaching staff and assistants should be gone. Let any new coach hire his own staff and assistants.

I would love to see this happen immediately after the season so they can get a new coach and have everything ready to go before the draft. That draft will be an even bigger draw if the Steelers are "rebuilding". I know I would be more excited to see the offseason and the draft with all new coaches.

A new coach and the team loaded with draft picks could get this team rebuilt pretty quickly if they're able to make some shrewd UFA signings. The biggest question is still going to be who is going to play QB.

If Tomlin stays - likely - then the 2026 QB competition will consist of two greats competing during a comeback, Ben and Manning.

Archie Manning, not Peyton.
 
My fingers are tired of typing the same of sh1t every week so please incorporate by reference every prior comment I have made about Mediocre Mike finding a way to be mediocre.

I've been too much of a Steeler fan for 50+ years now and I just can't watch this mess anymore. We (they) will never improve under this coaching staff. Never. We (they) hired and maintained mediocre. I am not content with mediocre.

The standard is below standard.
 
Tomlin is ruining his legacy in the Steel City. He’s going from mediocre to just plain bad.

Why keep Kahn hanging around?
Last couple years personnel decisions in transactions, have his hands all over it. And 90% of them were terrible.

Hey you forgot blaming a HOF defensive coordinator for the defensive troubles. Remember that? THAT is when it really started to go sideways. Remember Troy pitching a fit on the sidelines one year? That is the point that all the players that Tomlin INHERITED when they won that Super Bowl were in decline. And Then it turned into offensive troubles. They left the Oline fall apart. Couldn't run the ball. Then that fiasco got Ben killed and took several years off his career.

And he is STILL trying to figure out how to build a decent O-line. And poor Rodgers is getting killed this year as a result of it.
