Chinese City Orders Cats, Dogs off the Menu After Coronavirus Outbreak

The southern Chinese city of Shenzhen wants local restaurants to take dogs and cats off their menus as the country clamps down on the wildlife trade scientists suspect led to the deadly coronavirus outbreak.

Reuters reports a new city regulation states only nine meats that are permitted for consumption, including pork, chicken, beef and rabbit, as well as fish and seafood.

“Banning the consumption of wild animals is a common practice in developed countries and is a universal requirement of modern civilization,” the notice said.

Apart from dogs, the new Shenzhen act bars snake, frog and turtle meat from the dinner table.

A ban on eating dog and cat meat in Shenzhen would be “extremely welcome,” said Peter Li, China policy expert for Humane Society International, an animal welfare group.

“Although the trade in Shenzhen is fairly small compared with the rest of [Guangdong] province, Shenzhen is still a huge city and is larger than Wuhan, so this would be very significant and could even have a domino effect with other cities following.”

The public will have until Thursday to respond to the draft proposal, according to Reuters.

The annual Yulin Dog Meat Festival is one of the most controversial food festivals in China and sees thousands of dogs cruelly killed, skinned and cooked with blow-torches before being eaten by the locals, as Breitbart News has reported.

The festival began in 2010 and occurs every year on the first day of the summer solstice. Those who partake believe that eating dog meat cools the body in the summer months.

Each year in China, over 10 million dogs and four million cats are reportedly murdered for their meat. Most of these dogs are domestic pets stolen from families or strays taken from the streets and sent to notorious slaughter houses.

Most slaughter operations have closed in the past two months because of restrictions on moving dogs across provincial borders, Li said.

China’s top legislative committee on Monday also passed new legislation to ban all trade and consumption of wild animals.

Beijing is yet to revise its wild animal protection law, but the passage of the proposal was “essential” and “urgent” in helping the country win its war against the epidemic, wrote state newspaper People’s Daily.

The exact source of the novel coronavirus, known as COVID-19, remains unconfirmed. Scientists speculate that it originated in bats, snakes, pangolins, or some other animal.

Call me when it breaks the 14,000 deaths from the flu last year in the United States. It has a 98% recovery rate. ******* morons on tv make a big deal over it just for ratings.

They do this crap when a hurricane is a billion miles a way with little to no chance of hitting us.

I go to the store,milk,bread,water all gone. Gas station empty. And every single time it's less than a nor'easter and a few drops of rain. The news likes to get people all worked up into this impending doom scenario for nothing.

CDC Confirms First Possible Transmission of Coronavirus in U.S. – Bringing Total U.S. Cases to 60

U.S. health officials confirmed the first possible community transmission of the coronavirus in America, a troubling sign that the virus could be spreading in local cities and towns.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention doesn’t know exactly how the California patient contracted the virus. The individual is a resident of Solano County and is receiving medical care in Sacramento County. The patient didn’t have a relevant travel history or exposure to another patient with the virus, the CDC said Wednesday.

“At this time, the patient’s exposure is unknown,” the CDC said in a statement. “It’s possible this could be an instance of community spread of COVID-19, which would be the first time this has happened in the United States.”

In a note to staff at UC Davis Medical Center, CEO David Lubarsky confirmed that the CDC is investigating a patient at the center who may be the first to have contracted the infection from community exposure.

The patient arrived at the facility on Feb. 19 after being transferred from another hospital in Northern California, Lubarsky said in the note. He said the patient wasn’t immediately tested for the new coronavirus because the person didn’t fit the existing CDC criteria for the test, a protocol that UC Davis said it does not control.

The CDC ordered coronavirus testing on Sunday and confirmed Wednesday that the patient tested positive, UC Davis said.

The case brings the total number of cases in the U.S. to 60, a bulk of which are people who were evacuated from Wuhan, China or the Diamond Princess cruise ship that was quarantined off the coast of Japan.

“Community spread means spread of an illness for which the source of infection is unknown,” the agency said, adding that it’s possible the patient contracted the virus from someone who brought the infection back from another country. It’s significant because it means that it’s also possible the infection is spreading untraced throughout the local community.

California’s State Public Health Officer Dr. Sonia Angell said it’s been “an evolving situation, which California has been monitoring and responding to since COVID-19 cases first emerged in China last year. This is a new virus, and while we are still learning about it, there is a lot we already know.”

Earlier this week, CDC officials said that it was just a matter of time before the outbreak starts to spread in the U.S.“We are asking the American public to work with us to prepare for the expectation that this could be bad,” Dr. Nancy Messonnier, director of the CDC’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, told reporters on a conference call.

The announcement from the CDC came just hours after President Donald Trump asserted the risk of the virus to the American public is “low.”

Earlier in the day, U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar confirmed a new case of the coronavirus in the U.S., “the epidemiology of which we are still discerning,” he said while testifying on Capitol Hill.

The CDC said it is working closely with state, local, tribal, and territorial partners, as well as public health partners, to respond to this public health threat. “Unprecedented, aggressive efforts have been taken to contain the spread and mitigate the impact of this virus,” the agency said.

Health officials have said the respiratory disease is capable of spreading through human-to-human contact, droplets carried through sneezing and coughing and germs left on inanimate objects.

Hospitals across the U.S. have been preparing for the virus to spread further throughout the country, worrying a larger outbreak could overwhelm emergency rooms and quickly cause supply shortages of some crucial medical supplies.

The threat of the virus comes at a busy time for most U.S. hospitals. Another serious respiratory illness, the seasonal flu, is at its peak in the United States and many hospitals are stretched thin.

There are no proven therapies for the virus and a vaccine is likely to take more than a year.U.S. health officials said this week the first clinical trial testing of Gilead’s remdesivir in hospitalized patients with the coronavirus began.

I think it is starting to get to a concerning level. The problem is the mortality rate is like 7x that of the flu. If the disease spreads and becomes as common as the flu you are looking at 500,000 deaths per year.

Bad news for vaccine hopes - Coronavirus Infects Patient for Second Time, Prompting New Fears

A woman who was working as a tour bus guide was reinfected with the COVID-19 coronavirus, testing positive after having recovered from a prior infection, said a local government agency in Japan.
Osaka’s prefectural government confirmed that a woman in her 40s, who tested positive twice, was a resident in Osaka. She tested positive Wednesday after developing chest pains and a sore throat, the government told public broadcaster NHK.

She had first tested positive in late January and was released from the hospital on Feb. 1 and was declared coronavirus-free on Feb. 6, the government said.

However, officials said she started feeling chest pain and throat pain on Feb. 19. After going to the doctor several times, she tested positive again about a week later, according to the broadcaster.

As POTUS, Trump, in his own ****** up way, attempted to downplay the seriousness of the virus, so as to not hyper-inflate mass hysteria. View this as a weatherman telling people that it may snow, but if it does the snow won't end the world so as to prevent viewers from rushing to get toilet paper, eggs and milk. Why would he do that? Well, truth is, there's very little here, on this continent, while there are a lot of cases elsewhere. Could we face it? Absolutely. Will we, 100% definite, face it in the same mass scale that China and Italy have and are? Well, we can take steps to prevent it from coming here by at least banning travel - as we did. I'm sure there are other behind-the-scenes actions being taken that we are not privvy to yet.

But, you do Tibs and go on tying all this to Trump firing people in 2018, while the rest of us will live in 2020.
