The Coronavirus thread

You’re wrong, they wear N95 masks.

They wear both just as my folks do. N95s are required when treating for suspected or confirmed folks for COVID (and other things). As well as any arosol generating procedures like a neubulizer treatment(Sp?).

People are talking about wearing surgical masks to prevent contracting the virus, not to prevent spreading it which is what they do. You can use a muffler as part of an exhaust system, you can’t use it as part of an air as intake system.

You are right but you are using the wrong analogy. Actually, the catalytic converter does just that. ...........just saying...............

Explain it to John Cleese -
<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">It strikes me that it's terribly funny that the response of some Americans to a virus is to buy guns</p>— John Cleese (@JohnCleese) <a href="https://twitter.com/JohnCleese/status/1242877663116578817?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">March 25, 2020</a></blockquote> <script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

It strikes me funny too. Just because it pisses off Libs.

Well the thing is Mr Cheeeezzzeee, some Americans like to pull back the curtain and take a peek. To them they see how the govt in a snap of a finger ordered every American to stay home, to get fired, biz to go under, essentially taking all your freedoms like that. So with that some Americans look down the road a bit and see bad things coming and decided to get protection while they are still allowed before that is taken too.

Why do they wear them?

How about I educate you and then we’ll discuss. You just don’t buy an N95 mask, put it on your face, and you’re good to go. The purpose of wearing a surgical mask, that you can just put on your face, is the same as why you sneeze or cough into your sleeve. It has nothing to do with preventing contracting the virus.

I think you actually believe that. By the way, the muffler analogy is moronic. If you have to use an analogy, a good one is a filter.

You're wrong. Of course it helps with prevent contracting it. That's why emergency workers wear them.

The CDC website says that the N95 mask will prevent the transmission of every other virus including SARS, MERS, H1N1...etc., but supposedly this is the first virus in history that the N95 mask is ineffective against? I bet they have some oceanfront property in Iowa to sell you too.

Record 500+ deaths yesterday (1/6th of total) with predicted peak not for another two weeks and no significant decline until May. And I think that’s primarily New York Metro (NY, NJ, Conn). Chicago, Detroit, New Orleans and Miami on the horizon. Six figure death tolls are looking more and more likely.

YES, people are dying! YES, it is tragic! YES, we need to do everything we can to keep ourselves and loved ones safe. But enough with the idiotic panic and hyper-anxiety. FREAKING RELAX, have stiff drink, and most importantly CALM THE HELL DOWN!! The first confirmed case of COVID 19 in the US was reported on 20JAN2020. 3170 Americans have died from it in 71 days since it arrived in the US, that’s an average of 4.5 people per day. 7708 PEOPLE DIED EVERYDAY IN THE UNITED STATES BEFORE COVID-19. EVERY SINGLE DAY! KEEP SOME PERSPECTIVE! We went from 7708 to 7713! That’s how much things have actually changed

I’m not freaking out, just acknowledging the trajectory which is exactly what you aren’t doing. The average is 4.5/day, the most recent number was 500+ (111 times the average). Where do you think this is headed?

The n95 respirator mask is ineffective if it is not the proper size and fit for each person. Used correctly it will prevent contracted the disease through your airway. My daughter just went through a fitting process to make sure they have the right size and are putting it in and properly fitting the mask to the face otherwise you are just sucking in and expelling the air around the sides of the mask. Surgical masks are intended to protect others not yourself. Only a properly fit respirator like a n95 will work to prevent infections. Trog is pretty close to the truth on this one.

And if 25k people die from the virus that number goes up to about 7950 from 7708. Maybe if everyone was as concerned about the 7708 as they are the extra marginal percentage we would find cures for other ailments a whole lot faster.

Where do you think it's headed? You tear everyone else up for their predictions, but won't make your own. Your post intimates you think this is going to get really BAD. Put your stake in the ground.

As you can see we are running the razor's edge of society disintegrating. Just like that. So I don't even want to hear a damn word about why I need a rifle that can fire 30 rounds...**** I think I'll need 3-4 more of them now.

Are these still ok?

Here is an analogy for you; You're trajectory is as accurate as Coach's scouting reports and mock drafts.

This misses the point of all this. It isn’t strictly about the number of deaths as much as it has been about keeping this from totally overwhelming our healthcare system with a spike that hits all at once. Way to many are focusing on the wrong concerns. Had we not taken the steps to flatten the curve we are taking, the deaths would be orders of magnitude higher, less because of the danger of the disease to the average person but because the lack of capacity to provide the proper treatment to so many at once. The disease on an individual basis is not particularly worrisome but as an extremely easy to spread disease it becomes a problem that far outweighs any individual danger.

Again just to stress the point, with proper treatment most people are not at significant risk of dying from this disease but if people can’t receive the proper care then way more people will die than is warranted by the individual risk this disease poses.

On masks, the n95 respirator mask will only prevent catching this disease if it is the proper size and fit for the person wearing it. It should be sized and tested to make sure it works for you before using. Surgical mask prevent you transmitting the disease to a degree but are of minimal protective value for preventing getting the disease.

Domestic abuse calls are skyrocketing. Alcohol and drug abuse will too, as well as suicide. Yet some people still seem to have this idea that there are few if any serious negative consequences from shutting down the world and taking away most people's livelihoods.

will these be attributed to gun violence or corona, or both?

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to build hundreds of temporary hospitals for coronavirus crisis

WASHINGTON/NEW YORK - U.S. officials want to build hundreds of temporary hospitals across the country to cope with the thousands of new coronavirus cases being diagnosed daily after the United States endured its deadliest day yet on Monday with 575 fatalities.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which converted a New York convention center into a 1,000-bed hospital in the space of a week, is searching for hotels, dormitories, convention centers and large open space to build as many as 341 temporary hospitals, the chief of corps said on Tuesday.

“The scope is immense,” Lieutenant General Todd Semonite of the corps told the ABC News “Good Morning America” program. “We’re looking right now at around 341 different facilities across all of the United States.”

Central Park And Home Of Tennis' U.S. Open To House Hospital Beds For New York

As New York City's hospitals begin to buckle under the weight of the coronavirus crisis, two public spaces that are popular recreation spots in better times are being turned into field hospitals.

One such facility has been set up in Central Park, in the East Meadow. It's a grassy space normally populated by sunbathers, but as of Tuesday it will be a 68-bed respiratory care unit opened in partnership between the relief organization Samaritan's Purse and Mount Sinai Health System.

Another is about to be built at the home of the U.S. Open Grand Slam tennis tournament. The city will build a 350-bed space in Queens, at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center located in Flushing Meadows, which is also the largest public tennis facility in the world.

On Monday morning, the city welcomed the arrival of the USNS Comfort, a Navy hospital ship. The ship, which has about 1,000 beds and a dozen operating rooms, will treat patients who need urgent medical care, but who do not have COVID-19.

Captain of aircraft carrier with growing coronavirus outbreak pleads for help from Navy

The captain of a nuclear aircraft carrier with more than 100 sailors infected with the coronavirus pleaded Monday with U.S. Navy officials for resources to allow isolation of his entire crew and avoid possible deaths in a situation he described as quickly deteriorating.

The unusual plea from Capt. Brett Crozier, a Santa Rosa native, came in a letter obtained exclusively by The Chronicle and confirmed by a senior officer on board the aircraft carrier Theodore Roosevelt, which has been docked in Guam following a COVID-19 outbreak among the crew of more than 4,000 less than a week ago.

“This will require a political solution but it is the right thing to do,” Crozier wrote. “We are not at war. Sailors do not need to die. If we do not act now, we are failing to properly take care of our most trusted asset — our Sailors.”

In the four-page letter to senior military officials, Crozier said only a small contingent of infected sailors have been off-boarded. Most of the crew remain aboard the ship, where following official guidelines for 14-day quarantines and social distancing is impossible.

“Due to a warship’s inherent limitations of space, we are not doing this,” Crozier wrote. “The spread of the disease is ongoing and accelerating.”

Why do you want a board where posters can wish death upon others? I'm curious. This is an obvious and simple rule one would THINK everyone would get behind. Thou shalt not wish death upon other posters. Why do you want it to be allowed?

Trump put the over/under at 100,000. Experts with highly specialized degrees advised him of that. Who is anyone here to dismiss it when the US numbers are escalating? The 100,000-200,000 number seems to be getting more and more mention. They might be trying to gradually prepare us for that reality.

My trajectory? It’s a widely reported fact you can check for yourself.

Prior to this, I never knew the flu killed 80k last season. But no mention or hysteria about. May have heard it once on the news bc a little kid passed from it. Other than that no peep

You’re wrong, they wear N95 masks.

The problem is that the government is once again lying to us about ... everything. Is an N95 mask effective at providing significant protection from airborne virus transmission? The FDA says no:

N95 Respirators Not for Use by the Public

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) does not recommend that the general public wear N95 respirators to protect themselves from respiratory diseases, including coronavirus (COVID-19). The best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to this virus. However, as a reminder, CDC always recommends everyday preventive actions, such as hand washing, to help prevent the spread of respiratory diseases.

For the general American public, there is no added health benefit to wear a respiratory protective device (such as an N95 respirator), and the immediate health risk from COVID-19 is considered low.

https://www.fda.gov/medical-devices...n95-respirators-and-surgical-masks-face-masks

No added health benefit from the breathing protection?? Really? So why the **** do we see medical personnel wearing them when near any patient suspected of having the virus??

2f3fd2b7ddf42061292148423bc04fbd

What idiots!! The masks don't do a damn bit of good, throw them away!!

Or maybe they provide significant protection from contracting the virus through respiration, but there are not enough of the ******* masks for all the medical personnel and the general public so we need to prioritize use to those who intentionally come into contact with the infected and who need the damn masks.

For once, can a government tell the ******* truth about something?
