For us, online curriculum can not be recorded. It all has to be done “live” but virtual. It’s a violation of confidentiality to have pre recorded lessons- with parents being there, they could hear info that violates another students’ privacy. The difference between what’s going on now and what happened over the spring is that the stuff in spring was optional and the recordings were personalized. This is a regular class and FERPA applies.

Clusterfuck? I think so. And we wonder why teachers are irritated...

So a personal experience regarding COVID. WWSND?

Most of you know my 21 year old had COVID. We live in Maryland. He recovered fine, we quarantined him, and none of us caught it. His friends he'd been in contact with all got tested. He was super pro-active about contacting them all. One out of about 25 tested had it.

Fast forward. Two weeks ago I get a call from an obscure #. I don't answer it. The message is from a man who says in a very threatening tone "I am calling on behalf of the MD Department of Health. It is extremely urgent that I speak with you. Please call us back at 888-555-555 or 240-XXX-XXX." It was after 7PM I'm thinking "scam."

2 days later, a female calls. Same exact message, threatening tone. Do some Google research thinking I'm being scammed, find out it is the MD contact tracing group. I'm like yeah....no. I'm not taking that call.

Why you may ask? One, I didn't appreciate their tone nor approach. They never say why they are calling. Two, privacy. Yes, the greater good issues, blah blah blah. But I'm a bit fed up with the Nanny State telling me what I can and cannot do, threatening me with jail and fines for not wearing a mask, and essentially lying to so many of us. I also know we handled this in the most responsible way. I was tested twice, my son twice, my wife twice, the one infected three times, and everyone he came in contact with got tested. Where else I went, what I did is simply none of the Government's business. So I've not answered the calls.

My wife did. She told me what questions they asked....I forget them all, but being in the business of helping some companies do contact tracing, I determined them to be utterly useless. Much of what they said was "get tested, wear a mask, be careful" - essentially a lecture.

I received one this morning, ignored it. Checked the voice mail, and the woman says "We have been trying to reach you. We will try you again. It is urgent you answer the next time we call."

I'm like WTF? Guaranteed you don't hear from me at all now. They called again. I let it go to VM.

It's eeery. Gestapo-like. I don't plan to answer.

You do not see a problem with this concept? On so many levels?

• The money used to run these public schools is "ours"
• Government is FOR the people BY the people
• It is our RIGHT to demand things like better education
• When the school districts run with OUR money limit the education, the service and the offering while keeping 100% of the money, that is a problem.
• You suggest that the burden be put back on the parents (must provide own equipment) - so the parents and children receive less without getting a refund and are required to pay more for equipment the school otherwise would have provided??

These and other reasons have led many to start demanding refunds. And have led many states to begin pushing for schools to reopen when their initial stance was to keep them closed.

Your suggested approach - I'm sorry - is just wrong and unjustified based upon the source of the funds - the people.

Not sure the uproar as I agree with you. I am sure weight training 101 is not a core class. If its an elective class the school can not provide then either dont offer it or have the parents provide the equipment if the student wishes to take it. Lynn was making it seem like the parents are in the wrong and I was saying they have a point as the school can not provide stuff for their class. My daughters school basically cut out library and band. In order to keep them taxes would have only been another $20 / yr and it was voted down which I think is wrong.

I wouldn’t answer the call. My personal rule is if I don’t know the number, I don’t answer. And if it goes to VM and I still don’t know you, I’m lot calling back.

And to answer jitter- iDK what other states are like as far as electives are concerned at the HS level. I’ve only dealt with KS as it’s the only state my daughter went to HS in and the only state I’ve worked at a HS in. As far as electives go- parents are required to provide necessary equipment. Some of it is supplies, some of it is fees, some of it is a mix of both. It’s how it works here. We also are the only state I’ve ever heard of that requires a registration fee just to attend school. This isn’t private- it’s public. So not only do the parents pay just to have their kids attend public school (and that is for EVERY GRADE), they pay extra for electives and activities.
Trust me....it’s a racket and I don’t know how it’s legal.

I know what I'd recommend telling you to do normally (basically what Indy said) but this isn't a normal situation, and this isn't a normal time. I think I would continue not answering the phone and just play completely dumb.

I like to answer calls like that in my Sling Blade Billy Bob Thornton voice. It's a hoot for me personally. Then I hang up. I have done that with the irs scammers as well.

I do all kinds of things. Sometimes ill answer and just put the phone down. One time I took a metal pot and beat on it after answering the phone. I have used an air horn once after answering. I pretended to be super interested or concerned a couple times. Most of the time I just hang up and block

Correct. The odd part is, I didn't test positive. My son did. He was not a minor at the time, either. I suspect he gave my number though, since it was my insurance. Bizarre though, still...because they called my wife also. He wouldn't have given both parents information I don't think. I'll ask him.

Now that masks have become mandatory in most places, I'm waiting for the woke fascists to now start trying to ban certain types of masks.

Just wait for the gloom and doom that is about to come when there's a bunch of spikes in cases due to so many going back to college campuses. It seems obvious that there will be spikes, and these will be cases on young people at very low risk. Despite that, it will be reported as the boogeyman and the calls for new lockdowns will be rampant.

When we had our in service on Tuesday, the district was using a color coded way to determine how school would be run. Green meant zero cases and good to go in person. Then there was yellow, which was ok to go but could change daily, then orange which meant hybrid, and red which meant virtual. On Tuesday, there were 10 cases in the town of 25,000- so we were at orange! It didn’t say 10 cases at the school or in schools- 10 in the ENTIRE town. Judging by that, I’m gonna say we are virtual in September.
