The Coronavirus thread

Have you ever walked outside in Montreal in the winter?
No but I lived in Watertown, NY for a year, which is close enough. Sarge can back me up on that.
I was going to walk to the YMCA one night, temp was -30* and the wind chill was -60*, by the time I got across the street from my apartment every time I blinked my eyelashes froze together.

I just got over the Wuhan Virus. It was like a really bad cold with body aches and a fever. It is not a world ending plague and outside of a few people with comorbidity issues and the rare healthy person with some unknown anomaly in their immune system it isn't all that big a deal, The dirty secret is it is a variant of the cold virus and everyone will eventually get it and it was going to burn its way around the world the second it got out of the lab in Wuhan. It aint a world ending plague though and it sure as **** isn't a reason to destroy our economy, give up personal liberty and turn to communism.

I had the same thing back in late January of last year. It zapped the hell out of my energy for about 6 days. I figured it was the flu and I remember about halfway through it thinking to myself how I will never take feeling good again for granted. Who knows what the heck it was but I would not be surprised if it was the Rona before the Rona became just the remedy for killing a thriving economy in an election year..

Glad you are feeling better.

Hubs and I are going to get tested tomorrow. He’s been coughing and tired and it hurts like fire when I take a breath. Neither of us have a fever, and we aren’t feeling BAD. Sucks because if either of us is positive, I can’t go back to school for my final week of work....won’t get to see my kiddos again and that hurts more than anything.

Got my results today- negative. Hubby’s results were “cancelled”. He’s on his way to the clinic now to find out what that means, why it happened, and what he does next.

and the window of opportunity is cracked open for Ogre to claim what is rightfully its.

I can relate man...I used to live on Lake Erie in North Central Ohio.

Alberta Clippers!!
Yikes!

Well, hubby had to retest. They don’t know what happened. I’m still considered a close contact even though I’m negative because until we get official results, the HD considers the hubs to be presumptive positive. What a damn **** show. Luckily, we didn’t have to pay for any of the tests, so we aren’t out that money. But still.

To be fair, Ogre, I think what really happened is that the Chinese flu caught some Ogre, suffered bloating, farting, sharting, and coughing as a result but then recovered.

P.S. Glad to hear you are feeling better. You can start 2021 off right by keeping a promise to certain people relative to a certain liquor.

WILMINGTON, Del. — When President-elect Joe Biden announced his Covid-19 advisory board in November, he promised its health care experts would play a critical role in shaping his pandemic response plan.

But, on the eve of Biden's Thursday rollout, the board members are largely in the dark about the plan’s details, according to three people familiar.

Biden's Covid-19 response — portions of which will be laid out by the president-elect in a prime-time speech here — is expected to serve as a blueprint for pandemic efforts across the government, including a range of initiatives designed to boost testing, speed the development of new coronavirus therapies and distribute vaccines to hundreds of millions of Americans.

But most of the Covid advisory board, which Biden formed within days of the election as part of an effort to demonstrate that ending the pandemic would be his top priority, will not be briefed on the plan until tomorrow afternoon.

Since November, the 16-member board has often served as the public face for the transition’s pandemic messaging — with members appearing frequently on television and in other forums to discuss the health crisis and reinforce Biden’s resolve to end it.

The decision to keep the plan’s final details closely held came as a surprise to much of the advisory board, according to two people with knowledge of the situation. There was no specific reason given for the board members’ exclusion, the people said, though some members assumed that the Biden team wanted to cut down on the risk of leaks.

And while the board members still expect many of their contributions to make it into the final proposal, they won’t know until hours before Biden takes the stage what exactly the strategy will contain — and how those efforts will be presented.

Nobody should be surprised by this, at all. Beijing Joe hid in his basement for eight months, and the Punxsutawney President emerged after promising to have some brilliant plan to address the virus, but we all knew it was bullshit.

It was the perfect excuse though.

You mean this Mensa member isn't going to save us from the China plague?

I mean JFC, people were making fun of this blubbering buffoon before he really started to actually lose it. Not sure I should say lose it when he never had it.

You mean this Mensa member isn't going to save us from the China plague?

Wait, are you suggesting that Beijing Joe, the Punxsutawney President, is dumb? Why, because he cheated in school, plagiarized, got caught, then plagiarized a speech, got caught again, graduated at the bottom of his class in a ****** law school? And somehow broke his leg playing with a dog?

Come on, man.

One week before Beijing Joe, the Punxsutawney President, takes office:

Coincidence, I'm sure. Pure coincidence.

NY and Chicago now saying that restaurants need to be opened up. You would think they'd wait at least a month after Biden takes office just to keep up appearances, but once you've achieved near total censorship of dissent, i guess the charade is no longer necessary

If there's an upside to Biden winning, at least PA will be rid of our wonderfully transvestite state health secretary.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President-elect Joe Biden has picked Pennsylvania Health Secretary Rachel Levine to be his assistant secretary of health, leaving her poised to become the first openly transgender federal official to be confirmed by the U.S. Senate.

A pediatrician and former Pennsylvania physician general, Levine was appointed to her current post by Democratic Gov. Tom Wolf in 2017, making her one of the few transgender people serving in elected or appointed positions nationwide. She won past confirmation by the Republican-majority Pennsylvania Senate and has emerged as the public face of the state’s response to the coronavirus pandemic.

“Dr. Rachel Levine will bring the steady leadership and essential expertise we need to get people through this pandemic — no matter their zip code, race, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, or disability — and meet the public health needs of our country in this critical moment and beyond,” Biden said in a statement. “She is a historic and deeply qualified choice to help lead our administration’s health efforts.”

A graduate of Harvard and of Tulane Medical School, Levine is president of the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials. She’s written in the past on the opioid crisis, medical marijuana, adolescent medicine, eating disorders and LGBTQ medicine.

Biden and his transition team have already begun negotiating with members of Congress, promoting speedy passage of the president-elect’s $1.9 trillion plan to bring the coronavirus, which has killed nearly 400,000 people in the United States, under control. It seeks to enlist federal emergency personnel to run mass vaccination centers and provide 100 immunization shots in his administration’s first 100 days while using government spending to stimulate the pandemic-hammered economy,

Biden also says that, in one of his first acts as president, he’ll ask Americans to wear masks for 100 days to slow the spread of the virus.

Levine joins Biden’s Health and Human Services secretary nominee Xavier Becerra, a Latino politician who rose from humble beginnings to serve in Congress and as California’s attorney general.

Wait- so does that mean she was a he or that he was a she or that he is still a he?

Biden is paying back the debt of getting him elected. Heard Wolf is getting a position, as well. They don't even hide their bullshit anymore. A child psychologist is going to be the assistant secretary of health? Yep, makes total sense to me.

Felt the same way when Janet Napolitano left AZ to go work for the interloper.

Just curious, I haven't seen Floggy banging the North Dakota and South Dakota drum much lately. I wonder why?

Now look at rabid lock down states like New York and California:

Meanwhile, seems South Dakota's policies are leading to people moving to the state in droves. Huh...odd.

Kristi Noem’s No-Lockdown Win: People Moving To South Dakota

South Dakota GOP Governor Kristi Noem’s rejection of instituting draconian “lockdowns” because of the coronavirus seems to be bearing fruit. In a survey conducted by United Van Lines in January that tracked customers’ 2020 state-to-state migration patterns, South Dakota ranked fourth in the nation, virtually tied for second behind the state of Idaho.

“Black Hills area realtors and builders say there’s an influx of people who are relocating permanently or buying land in the region — and the trend isn’t expected to slow anytime soon. Newcomers from California, Washington, New York, New Jersey, Washington, D.C., Texas, Michigan, Colorado and Virginia along with Minnesota, North Dakota and Wyoming are leading the trend of relocating to South Dakota, local realtors say,” the Rapid City Journal reported.

Lori Barnett, owner and broker at VIP Properties’ Rapid City office, stated, “We had a strong market to start the 2020 year. However, after COVID-19 hit and cities and states across the country began to implement massive shutdowns, people in those areas started looking to less restrictive states. Gov. Kristi Noem has certainly taken the laissez faire approach in dealing with COVID-19, which has definitely drawn attention to our state and our area in particular. People tend to be searching for a place to have more autonomy, be less populated, great outdoor recreation, and not having a state income tax is definitely a plus.”

United Van Lines pointed out that fewer customers than in prior years cited a new job or transfer as their reason for moving. But a strong upward trend was found among those moving to be closer to their family, possibly because families have been constrained from traveling to see their families during the coronavirus pandemic.

“Idaho was the state with the highest percentage of inbound migration (70%) among states experiencing more than 250 moves* with United Van Lines for the second consecutive year. … Among the top inbound states were South Carolina (64%), Oregon (63%), South Dakota (62%) and Arizona (62%),” United Van Lines noted.

In a significant indication that people are fleeing the lockdowns implemented in leading Democrat-run states, New Jersey was atop the rankings of locations people fled from, at 70%, followed by New York (67%), Illinois (67%), Connecticut (63%) and California (59%).

“Data from March to October 2020 also revealed the COVID-19 pandemic influenced Americans’ decisions to move,” United Van Lines noted. “For customers who cited COVID-19 as an influence on their move in 2020, the top reasons associated with COVID-19 were concerns for personal and family health and wellbeing (60%); desires to be closer to family (59%); 57% moved due to changes in employment status or work arrangement (including the ability to work remotely); and 53% desired a lifestyle change or improvement of quality of life.”

Michael A. Stoll, economist and professor in the Department of Public Policy at the University of California, Los Angeles stated, “We’re seeing that the COVID-19 pandemic has without a doubt accelerated broader moving trends, including retirement driving top inbound regions as the Baby Boomer generation continues to reach that next phase of life.”

And....the cure is worse than the virus.

Research: 890,000 Americans may die due to COIVD lockdowns

Researchers estimate that woman and African Americans will be hit hardest in the short-term, but white men may suffer larger consequences in the future.

Jan. 17, 2021

A new working paper from US National Bureau of Economic Research predicts disastrous long-term effects of the COVID-19 lockdowns.

The paper, authored by Francesco Bianchi from Duke University, Dongho Song of Johns Hopkins University, and Giada Bianchi of Harvard Medical School, examines the long-term consequences of the COVID-19 lockdowns.

The paper predicts an excess death of 890,000 Americans over the next 15 years due to the unemployment caused by COIVD lockdowns. “These figures translate in a staggering 0.89 million additional deaths over the next 15 years,” the researches write.

The team estimates that woman and African Americans will be hit hardest in the short-term, but white men may suffer larger consequences in the future.

The team calls on government officials to consider the long-term impacts of lockdowns. “We interpret these results as a strong indication that policymakers should take into consideration the severe, long-run implications of such a large economic recession on people’s lives when deliberating on COVID-19 recovery and containment measures. Without any doubt, lockdowns save lives, but they also contribute to the decline in real activity that can have severe consequences on health.”

It’s a point that even Nate Silver recently made.

I'm pro lockdown for the time being given the circumstances of the moment (vaccines here, new variants etc.) but I also worry that when we look back in 5 years we'll discover all sorts of adverse consequences from people being physically/socially isolated from one another.
— Nate Silver (@NateSilver538) January 17, 2021

Still #1 and #2 all-time in cases per capita despite being two of the least densely populated states.

Honestly, it’s like you’ve forgotten everything you ever knew about highly contagious diseases, Tim.
