The Good The Bad and the Fugly

Do we ever start questioning Colbert as a talent evaluator at the quarterback position?

Other than Roethlisberger (who let's face it, wasn't Colbert's call), the guy has drafted Tee Martin, Brian St. Pierre, Omar Jacobs, Dennis Dixon and Landry Jones. He's brought in as free agents Tommy Maddox, Charlie Batch, Byron Leftwich and Brad Gradkowski.

I know Steelers Nation has a soft spot for Charlie Batch and he was a good guy, but look at that list and tell me who really has talent. Isn't that a kind of sad list?
The FA's were all decent although Lefty had a tendency toward season-ending injuries, the draft picks not so much.

They really need to cut Adams and move on. Hang in there a few weeks and better OT's will be cut by other teams. Adams just doesn't have it.

couldn´t you say the same of about 30 other teams?

Backup Qbs are backups for a reason. Not many teams have a great backup. If we take a QB high in the draft it can be seen as a wasted pick because he wont be starting for several yrs unless ben gets hurt. As far as back ups go lefty, batch, and grad are at least serviceable. I think Grad will be better in an actual game than he has showed so far. I am still a Jones supporter and think he will be ok as a backup, just needs some more exp.

My observations from the game.

QB- Ben didn't have much chance since his only completion was for 2-4 yards and Archer took it 40+ more so...
Bruce looked a little off on a few throws but dropped one right over the defender in the breadbasket for Wheaton. Nice touch.
Jones looked like he didn't have much touch or understanding of the offense. Better so far from his performance last year but lets see how he progresses this preseason.

RB- Bell looked quick with nice vision. I think he will have a nice year if he stays healthy.
Blount looks to be the ramming rod and red zone RB.
Archer on his carries looked tough going up the middle not trying to bounce everything which sometimes happens with speed guys.

TE- Miller didn't have a lot of opportunities but I am not concerned. Spaeth from what I saw blocked well and did get open on a missed pass. Paulson doesn't look to have much competition from anyone and will likely be #3 again.

OL- Best of what I saw from in the game. They passed off well, ran blocked well giving the RB's holes. Sack given up on Bruce was his own fault. The defense stacked a side of the line and he didn't call a hot route so not the OL's fault just too many defenders blitzing and not enough to protect against it. Depth wise I like Hubbard and Wallace. I think Adams is just too slow and doesn't do much well besides run block so OT we are real thin. Maybe Johnson can step up.

LB's- JJ got to the QB so good sign but all in all the OLB's weren't impressive. Pass rush was and still is an area of concern. ILB looked good minus the 73 yard TD run but DL and S looked bad as well on that play.

DL- Tuitt was a bit excited I think and I think needs some more time before starting. McLendon got pushed around. Heyward probably played best of the starters. McCullers looked very strong at the point of attack and from what I saw he killed 1-on-1's and the only way to slow him up was with two linemen blocking him. I have high hopes for him.

CB- Green was grabby and I don't think he makes the cut. No one else stood out in a positive or a negative so I think our CB's will be so-so this year.

S- Mike Mitchell looked like Ryan Clark on that TD run. Bad angle. Will Allen looks slow. Jordan Dangerfield looks to have some pop. I had him not making the 53 man cut but I am not so certain now.

McLendon didn't play.

Ford probably mistook Cam for McClendon, two L-1011's ...and nobody has any props for Thomas ? I like his fire and he can pop with the best of them, lookin' forward to seeing more of him.

The first punt that went 21 yards was actually a good punt, it landed on the 5 yard line and bounced out to the 12 where it was downed. The problem is we have su h a weak legged kicker the idiot head coach of ours had us punt from their 33 yard line instead of actually trying in a meaningless game condition to see if Suisham can actually hit from 50. More stupid situational coaching from the con man who never learns from prior mistakes.

after signing the big contract.. (suisham) My guess is Tomlin is interested in seeing if the big legged young punter we have (wing) is capable of nailing the coffin corner..to pin them back...

McLendon didn't play.

Who ever started at NT got pushed around. I didn't realize McLendon was out so thank god. If it was Cam and he got pushed out the hole that easily on that 73 yarder we might need McCullers to start sooner than later! Every 1-on-1 you see he is pushed his guy back into the pocket and the only time I saw him get stood up they had two guys on him. They never pushed him back and he was always in position to make a play if it was a run play or to get his hands up in the throwing lane if they'd have thrown his way.

They were in Nickle on that play Tuitt and Heyward were in.

Forgot to do the WR's.

A. Brown looked like he is midseason form in running routes and getting open. Wheaton had a nice snag from Bruce but it was an awesome throw right in the bread basket. Archer I feel will assist some others getting open downfield. That 2 yard catch he took 46 will make safeties flat footed when AB or Wheaton go flying past them. Moye looked ok. Had one that I feel he should have caught that went thru his hands. Not an easy catch but a catch you want to see him make if you are going to keep him on the 53 man. Bryant showed why he was still available in the 4th round and all the haters can eat crow now because Archer is head and shoulders above Bryant when it comes to being NFL ready. Loved the pick at the time and love it more now. I do like Bryant and I feel he makes the 53 man because of his raw potential and I feel if we use 2014 as a redshirt year for him we could have an elite WR group in 2015. Justin Brown might have great hands but is slow and won't be more than a possession guy but if he can get open and move chains on 3rd and 7 and is willing to go over the middle then thats all you need from your 5th WR.

Tuitt I can understand but Heyward surpises me. I wouldn't mind seeing them bring in McCullers in the nickel just to eat up a few blockers. Maybe I am a little to high on McCullers but I liked what I saw from the big man.

I think once the kid learns how to handle double teams and stay on his feet we may have something. One on one he is a problem. Teams have to double which is what we want. What made Hampton great was he commanded a double team and was still unmovable. If McCullers can learn how to do that this defence will takes leaps and bounds back towards what we are used to.

No sir i understand exactly what your saying his development will be key and he is position flexible. Can play DE too. I dont rhink they expected him to come on so soo.

Tuitt is displaying Aaron smith and Richard Seymour like qualities in camp and in the game. Big man can move and stacked very well against the Giants.

The one to keep an eye on is Mauro. Played with excellent arm extension and has moved in front of Arnfelt. Nick Williams flashed too

Good problems to have.

I think we need to be looking for a GREAT back up in a year or two. A.Rogers sat behind the old toothless one for 3 years. We don't have A.Rogers in the wing, currently.
AND yes, colbert needs to be held accountable.
