The Good, The Bad, and the Panthers

I like the idea of Gilbert having help from Adams.

and why not switch Timmons and Shazier where Timmons has his old spot back? then you perhaps have only one guy confused instead of two......

I'm one of Timmons biggest supporters, and I think he catches a lot of undeserved negativity on this site...WITH THAT SAID. Timmons isn't confused at the moment, in fact he has been in position to make a lot of plays this year, he just hasn't made them. In Baltimore, there were at least three running plays/screens that he read absolutely perfectly, then over ran the RB or just flat out missed the tackle. On one, he slid by the RB barely grazing his feet, his presence was enough to slow the RB down and the rest of the guys cleaned up.

But that has been Timmons so far this year. Over running plays, missing arm tackles, or not being able to stay with TE's. He's an explosive player, and can make quick reads, but his tackling this year has been atrocious. Switching him and Shazier doesn't help us any. I think he should say "one Mississippi" before flowing to the play.

Since we are on the subject of tackling, I noticed that Troy made a HUGE adjustment in the Baltimore game. The first half he was flying around, throwing his body at the player, just trying to hit them. In the second half, he squared up, extended his arms, and wrapped up. Now we just need the other 10 guys on D to do the same. Forget the big hits, forget trying to blow the player up and get on sportscenter, square up and wrap up. It's not going to solve our defensive woes, but it will greatly improve our overall D.

No huddle. Period. The End.

If we don't come out with the no huddle and use it as our base offense throughout the game, then Haley needs to go immediately. You must go with your strength. What worked in the first half against Cleveland must be our base offense. Throw in a little regular stuff to mix it up but not the other way around. It's f'ing common sense. Come on MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The thought of this game does not leave me with a warm and fuzzy feeling. I'd say it leans more toward indigestion.

Carolina's defense will eat the Steelers alive. They just held Detroit's dynamic offense to one touchdown (and 4.6 yards per play, which is what Jacksonville averaged last year) -- how many points do you think a team that's got 3 field goals over the last 6 quarters is going to put up on them?

Stafford sucks. Take CJ out of that offense, and MS never gets that big contract. Why do I care? Because BR is better. The Steelers have a better run game. I think the offense has the capability to wake up and score points on the Panthers.

They better, because our D sucks.

Bring back the bubble screen if you can't move the ball!

Haley is a doofus.

One of these new money WR's better get the **** open.

Hard to understand why so many people are discounting the Panthers. They are at home, were 12-4 and Div. champs last year, and have a top rated D.

Haley has too big of an ego for that. Of course, if we have limited success with no-huddle Sunday night and lose, we'll get some bullshit answer at the press conference as to why we stopped using it. "Uhhhh uhhhh game tempo dictated that we switch things up..yeah, yeah thats it! We needed um...we needed..less tempo"

They have a completely different team, all new WR's, new personnel on the OL, new safety. Last year was last year. If you wanna just go by stats and think they are some juggernaut of a team, by all means that is your right. But they aren't some unbeatable team. Their run game is worse than ours, their WR's don't scare anyone, their OL is on par with ours, and their QB holds on to the ball and takes extra hits. Where they are good is the D-line. It's scary good across the board, but after front 4, Kuechly is their only defensive playmaker.

They are still a very good team, I don't see anyone in this thread saying otherwise. But they are beatable.

Would the team that beats them be required to have a good offensive line? If that is the case we just might be screwed. Their wide outs have not gotten to play against our d yet they might look good the way our guys are playing now. I think your description of their team is very good. However they might just win the match up battles against our team unless what has been trotted out the last 6 quarters gets replaced whith what came out the first two quarters.

From what I have seen pre-season and now the first 2 games, we are going to need a complete Panther break down to win. At this point, unless we come in fired up, sharp and playing smart, this will be a 6-10 team at best.

What in God's name makes you think we will be fired up, sharp and playing smart? This team has no passion and doesn't give a ****.

See post number 14 in the "steelers have grown too soft thread."

I'm glad someone here is actually in the locker room and knows what is in the heads of the players. Can you tell us how Ben and Haley are getting along? Has Peezy punched Worilds yet? How much does Gilbert eat before games?

We are very young at a lot of spots.m Lack of experience and it appears to me strength.

Judging from Tomlin´s press conference, I think we should just forfeit and go for the #1 pick next year. It seems like we´re going up against an elite pro-bowl squad every week the way he dishes out compliments.

You can get on Tomlin's case for a lot of things, but this is ain't one of 'em. What the hell is he supposed to say when we play Tamp or Jax - "The team we're playing this week is utter ****. We should whoop their *** like Peterson turned loose at Chuck E. Cheese's."
The very last thing in the world this team needs is for their coach to provide bulletin board material for any team, let alone one that seems primed to kick their *****.

They recently whooped us, and they are undefeated we are not. This team has shown some good play and some horrible play, more of the later than the former. I suspect they loose in a close one this week playing mostly good football just not good enough to overcome the mistakes they make.

Well, there goes another keyboard. Damn that's funny

I watched the Panthers game yesterday, I really wanted to get a feel for how the team played. This is what I came away with after that game.

1. Their OL is not that good on the interior, specifically LG. They have a converted tackle playing there, and he is clearly still learning the position. He is easily pushed back, or just flat out pushed aside. Cam Heyward and Brett Keisel should have some impact there.

2. Cam Newton takes a LOT of hits. He's been hit more than any other QB in the league since he came into the league, even more than Ben. The main goal here will be keeping him in the pocket and getting some good hits on him, get him rattled.

3. Their WR core is average at best. Kelvin Benjamin has the making of a star, but he's not there yet and is still making some rookie mistakes. After that you have a philly cast off and Cotchery. They aren't going to burn us with speed, but the underneath stuff could kill us.

4. Their biggest weapon is Olsen, and they go to him A LOT. That is where the coverage needs to be. If he lines up outside, the ball is going to him every time.

5. Their running game is ok, but will prob look amazing against our front.

6. Defensively is where things get hairy. Their front 4 is great, they rotate often so it isn't one or two players. It's the entire group. They will eat Gilbert alive. If we don't chip or keep a TE on his side all game, Ben better get his running shoes on.

7. Their secondary can be passed on if we can manage to give Ben some time. They tripled CJ quite a bit and Stafford forced the ball to him a few times, but there were WR running open all game long. They struggled with Golden Tate who is a quicker shiftier type WR. Brown and Wheaton should have good games.

Bottom line is we have to keep Newton in the pocket on defense, and on offense we have to do whatever we can to keep Ben upright. That is really the only scary part of this game. With how Gilbert played in Baltimore, the Panthers D-line is better. They deactivated Hardy, and his back up still had two sacks from the right side of the OL. While Jonathan Stewart had some highlight runs, he was limited to 37 yards on 15 carries with a long of 22. Again this goes back to their OL just not being that good. And we didn't give up a ton of yardage to Baltimore aside from one long run late in the game. This game will be won or loss on the offensive side of the ball for us. We HAVE to give Gilbert help. I would not be apposed to going with a two TE set, with Heath as one and Adams as the other.

So I was pretty close, where are all those "we're gonna get blown out people at?

I'm surprised we were able to run the ball so well, our OL really had a GREAT game against a tough DL.

Nice call nostrodumbass.

The team played much better this week. No panic just keep plugging away.
The Steelers started out field goaling them to death.
A touch down started things going.
More touch downs were added.
Special teams were pretty good with one not real smart play.
Special teams became real special when they recovered a fumble in the end zone, that was very good work.
The line began to wear down the other guys and the runners began pounding the other team for steady gains.
This looked like power has come back and misdirection really burned these guys.

This game proves that a great running game and decent defense (not that ours is decent, but hear me out) can do wonders. Just like days of old. I don't give a **** that this is a flag-football passing league now. A dominant rushing game and defense wins games and championships.
