The head coach search

They also have gone with a D-minded guy the past 3 coaches and are bringing in mostly D guys now. As much as many of us think it is needed this time to go with an O-minded guy, they probably stick with a D-minded guy.

Most of the best candidates around the league seem to be defensive guys this year, so we might be looking too much into that.

They might be more interested in Klay Kubiak than we think, considering they seem to like him more than his highly sought after brother.

Shula apparently has the league's lowest-paid defense and is still in the playoffs.
It stands to reason that he could great things with the league's highest-paid defense that did their usual one-and-done this season.
Possibly even...historic things.....
Steelers are not likely to be highest paid defence in 2026. There's a couple of higher defensive contracts from 2025 already off the roster (e.g. Slay) and their two highest paid defensive players for 2026 after Watt (Ramsey and Heyward) are likely cap cuts or pay cuts.

True, I'm just saying we weren't getting our money's worth. 20th or worst in most statistical categories.

Maybe, but that would be a tough act for a Shula to follow.. it would probably open him up to even more scrutiny than usual during his tenure. He might not want to always be compared to Don.

young Shula may borrow a tomlin quote. “ We don’t chase shadows on a sunny day”.

salute the naqtion

This team is a hot mess so whoever we hire needs to understand that 2-3 years of suck are on the way. We need to rebuild the OL, DL, WR, and more!

It literally takes 2 years to turn an absolute bum team to contender. One good draft along with a solid free agency and a coach that doesn’t suck and there is zero reason they can’t contend. We are not nearly as bad off (roster wise) as some of the teams that turn it in 2 years.

But if it does take 2-3 years because they decide to burn the whole thing down, so be it.

May as well get the discussion started.

Personally, I'm not married to the idea of an offensive-oriented coach, though that would be my preference.

I dont think they'll look to the college ranks, but you never know.
I would take Gruden in a heartbeat. I understand he’s still in litigation but he’d be a perfect fit.

From my perspective on this, we want a Noll philosophical/intellectual/demeanor type coach. Noll was a Shula tree coach, a man with deep intellect and knowledge of the game. He had an understanding of how various systems worked and why, and how to adapt the system to his players and then execute. He was also humble enough to let the credit go where it was due vs making the spotlight shine on himself. The two guys who best fit that mold are, obviously Shula, who has the direct linkage to the Shula tree and shares those traits with Noll, and Udinski, the Jags OC and probably one of the smarter if not smartest coaches in the league. My main concern with Udinski as this point is the inexperience, but that never stopped Rooney's from hiring. He is a more offensive minded choice though, which would make some members here very happy.

Minter would be a solid, more Cowher-like choice of coach. Also acceptable to me, but I really want to see a return to strategic, well thought out leadership at HC at this point. What I don't want to see is a return to a familiar face who may have been here before and supports/knows the culture of the past 10 years, because that needs to be washed away, or a reach pick who doesn't have the fundamental mindset needed to be a successful HC at this level. Philosophy, intellect, and the ability to be a thinker are paramount. If we get the right guy, a 15-20-year window would be justified even if the first 1-2 seasons are rough. If we get a tactical, pure rah-rah "player's coach" type, we may not see a SB win for another 20 years.
