26-year-old Myles Jack finds himself looking for a new NFL home after the Jacksonville Jaguars released him earlier on Tuesday. The former UCLA Bruin is a gifted middle linebacker who led the Jaguars in tackles last season. He has occasionally struggled with injury, but when healthy, he is 6’1″, 255 pounds of flying fury. He has sideline to sideline speed and a nose for the ball. He is aggressive, a good coverage linebacker and most importantly, he plays downhill. In short, he should be a prime target for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Jack was a key part of the Jaguars AFC championship journey that finished just a few minutes short of the Super Bowl. He signed a four-year, $57 million dollar contract in 2019 with $33 million guaranteed. The Jaguars cut him to save cap space, instead of seeking a trade for the talented Jack. He is sure to elicit multiple offers as a free agent with playoff experience and based on his tenure with Jacksonville, he should be looking for a stable organization with a chance to win.
Signing Jack would fill a key spot for the Steelers. The Steelers despite having ample cap space, have been thrifty and smart with their signings thus far in free agency. Myles Jack could anchor the middle of the defense and give Devin Bush, another speedy middle linebacker who is trying to rebound from knee surgery, the freedom to just play and not worry about calling the defense. Myles Jack has the potential to fall into the James Farrior mold, and not only solidify the linebackers, but vastly improve the run defense without sacrificing coverage.
Jack is not without risk. He has a history of knee injuries and while he played in an AFC Championship, who knows how damaged his psyche is by the losing in Jacksonville. His free agent suitors should give us a clue whether he just wants to play out the string every year and get paid, or if he wants to be part of something special. Signing Myles Jack gives the Steelers the freedom to go best available at number 20 in the upcoming NFL Draft, or move up if they are in love with a huge talent. Maybe a 340-pound freak defensive tackle like one Mr. Jordan Davis, or a game changing wideout like Chris Olave?
