So on Saturday Pickett had a controversial run because he went into a slide then decided to keep running for a td

This has sparked some controversy and talk of a rule change.. what i want to know is how is this different than the way too often used tactic of heading for the sideline as if you are going out, then turning upfield at the last moment? That is done all the time by scrambling qbs…

It was a great heads up play, no need for a rule change. To me, it's no different than a juke move, or a pump fake. Hell, Rodgers had a pump fake on a defender than allowed him to walk into the EZ untouched, he was 5 yards past the LOS when he did it.

it is different than heading out of bounds since the QB is fair game as he heads for the sideline but once he starts the slide you can't touch him

i don't have an issue with what he did...they have to make sure he slides

Naw, Pickett only pulled off this ingenious move because he had so much time on his hands to devise it during the extra COVID year. Don't be fooled -- it's just another mirage in the illusion of his phenomenal senior season that just took too long to materialize. The guy is a future bust.

At least that's what a certain poster here would have you believe.

Read an article that in college, as soon as the QB lowers his butt, hips and acts like he's going into a slide the officials can call him down. They didn't and Pickett made the most out of it. In all fairness, defensive players who are charging at a QB and see him going into a slide, they pull up. He should have been called down and if the rule isn't definitive enough, they need to make a change. It's tough enough for a player to pull up running at full speed, then tell him the QB may be bluffing so....

Next time the QB runs and a player takes him out when he goes into a last second lame slide, he gets a flag. They're already punishing defensive players for "excessive force," Pickett exploited an opportunity and I have no problem with his actions, just the ambiguity of the rule or the officials.

I was watching it during the game and thought, what a great move. My next thought was......I bet someone is going to absolutely nail him on his next run....legal or not.

It didn't look like an intentional fake to me. I think he was going to slide then saw an opening and went for more.

Sounds like a flashback to a few girls I dated back in the day.😁

Great move and worked out well. But, they have to change the rule. A slide means the QB is giving himself up, the play is over and no D player can touch him. If this is allowed, the refs will just have to not throw a flag on slides when the D player levels a QB. You would have to as you can't take the chance he is faking. Seriously, if they don't fix the rule in the NFL and the NCAA so you can't fake the slide, then some QB's are going to get destroyed next year, and rightly so. Pickett just made the slide an irrelevant play as far as the QB giving himself up. It's free for the D to load up and destroy any QB and I sure would if I'm a player. "Oh, I thought he was faking like Pickett." Ref has to pick up his flag.

I didn't like the play when he did it. I feel it sets a bad precedent. Defenders will either level sliding QBs or refs will be super quick on the whistle and possibly negate legit scrambles. Pickett himself said he did it on purpose whether or not he was just BSing who knows. I don't know if we necessarily need a rule change at this point, but i think teams should be warned not to do it or there will be a rule change coming. I do not think this is similar to pump fakes at all. A qb is still fair game while pump faking, but not while sliding

Mahomes was doing that fake out of bounds thing for a short period..................... he got smoked a couple of times and now no longer does it. If I was a defensive player I'd take them out big time if possible and as in Mahoes' case, they learn quite fast.

My employee is a KC fan and when Mahomes first started doing this I asked him about it and he was smug as well if he can get away with it why not. I responded because he is going to get hurt, defense don't take kindly to that ****. Sure enough he got taken out hard twice I know of, once missing a play due to wind knocked out. He hasn't done it in awhile.

this^^^

next time a QB gets hit "looking like he may slide", they can thank Kenny Pickett. When I watched it in real time, I was impressed with his speed, but looked at it again and the defense let up, that's the difference. There's a still-shot I saw that his knee was about 6" from the grass. Refs should have blew the whistle. Idon't know if there needs to be a rule, but it's an either/or situation. Slide so you don't get hit to protect the QBs like we've always hear or run and get hit. Can't bend the rule because a QB will get knocked out trying to slide if the D is unsure.

All at once? Nah that is some cat out there not me. Most were used properly. But there was a few times I was slacking.😁

I don't have a thing against the kid but it's 100% different. Pump fakes freeze people. And you are free to hit someone in the act of throwing just changes the strike zone. The rule was made to protect his position and he abused it. If it was Brady you would not think that way. Be consistent.

I think it was a smart move by Pickett, but don't think he'll try it again. If the game were decided by one possession, I could understand the angst this is receiving.

It does show that he's a pretty savvy QB and boosts his draft value.

I think the consensus here is that it doesnt need a rule change. I think the pump fake example is accurate..

but if the qb throws tge ball instead of pump faking you absolutely have to let up so it is similar

Maybe its just time to get rid of the slide rule … it’s redundant with the headshot and forceful hit rules anyhow… you cant slobberknock anyone anymore… and that was the driving force behind the slide rule

That's how you solve the problem. You may give up 15 yards in personal foul, but given his history... You have to double-tap.

And I'll remind you all of the game where Peyton Manning (playing for the Broncos) actually SLID and then got up and threw a 20 yard pass to Emmanuel Sanders.

Why somebody didn't destroy him after he threw the ball, I don't know.

You see this in the NFL also. QB's going towards the sidelines and the defenders let up a bit and then the QB darts upfield for a few more yards. Jackson has done against us a few times. Cheap yards. If the defender pops him flags are thrown. Half the time even if they are hit inbounds right before going out you get a flag the majority of the time. To me, it is totally different than a juke move or pump fake. The QB is taking advantage of a rule that protects them. Simple to fix. If a QB takes advantage throw a flag. Make it an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. If the ref views the QB is taking advantage of the protection rule he throws the flag. Shouldn't happen to many times until all QB's never do it again. Get it done Rog.

ugh - remember when Peyton sort of did that, but worse?

Yep. Manning clearly gave himself up. Should have been a sack. A gift for one of our defenders.

I agree with this post completely. But I think faking the slide is even worse than looking like you are going out of bounds. Except for maybe a game over situation no one does this but a qb.
