Just seems like another NFL look what we are doing deal. I've probably coached a couple hundred practices. Very few if any concussions and those kids know a lot less where to stick their melon in the tackle. Plus you have levels of contact that range from hip touch, to thud, full contact. There is no way mini camp is full contact. And I get that they are getting ready for full go in training camp, but everyone just looks like they are moving awkward. Seems like another NFL gimmick move.

Seems like nothing really to make a fuss about. If they do reduce the risk of head injury/concussion by 33% like the company claims, great. If not, so what.
Btw, Alabama has been using them for the last couple of years. Tennessee has used them since 2016. South Carolina since 2013. They are used by a host of other college and H.S. teams. And even some youth leagues. I guess if they didn't see a decline in concussions during practice, they wouldn't keep using them.

Edit: They don't claim they reduce the risk of concussion by 33%. They claim the pads reduce impact force by 33%.

Tomlin wore one at OTAs the other day. Darth Tomlin yo.

These are nothing new lol. They’ve been around for quite some time by colleges and high schools

I wouldn't say I care. I'd say the players look like they're moving awkwardly and I don't think they are doing anything in practice.
Oh not getting the same out of practice? Up to the coaches to make sure that isn't a norm...

I'd be surprised if there wasn't an adjustment period to wearing them. Smart of the Tomlin to have them get used to them in mini-camp rather than waiting until training camp.

I had to dbl chk the thread before opening. Look like one of those early morning titles

I must have missed the story, is that the NFL plan? To use these in all practices ? Regular season practices ?

Basically the plan is to try them out to see if they work. Towards that end, they have mandated that all DL, OL, LBs and I believe TE & RBs wear them during the first two weeks of contact during camp this year. They'll look to see if there is a reduction of injuries associated with helmet hits, including concussions during that time compared to previous years.
So, I'd guess that if there is, they will mandate them during all practices and for all position groups.

Thanks SteelBuckeye !!!

I'm glad they are wearing them now to help prepare for when it counts.

Here is a case of PRO-action and NOT RE-action, glad for that.

Good job coach Tomlin.

And if they really do help, how long till we see people clamoring for game use?

You say that like doing what they can to protect players would be a bad thing.
Seriously though, those Guardian protectors have been in use at the H.S. and college level since at least 2012. They're not being used in games at those levels. But, it's possible, I guess.

Recall when Aaron Rodgers tried one out last year.

I thought they were going for the Undercover Brother look.

Can someone post a pic of whatever the **** it is the OP is talking about in this thread, please?

I’m all for safety measures if it really helps. I was just thinking out loud how damn odd that would look watching it every week 😂

Point was the gazoo isn't doing anything in practice in terms of real safety not that the players aren't doing anything. And I don't think Tomlin is being proactive I think its mandated.

Gotya. What would you consider a real safety mandate? They already limit contact and pads.
