W2W4: Pittsburgh Steelers

By Scott Brown | August 9, 2014 12:00:54 PM PDT
The Pittsburgh Steelers (0-0) and New York Giants (0-0) open the preseason Saturday night at MetLife Stadium.

1. The 2014 draft class: The rookies are brimming with promise and a handful of them should help right away. Coach Mike Tomlin and his assistants get their first look at the players in a live game who collectively are a key to the Steelers rebounding from consecutive 8-8 seasons. First-round pick Ryan Shazier is unlikely to play after missing three consecutive practices because of the right knee injury that Tomlin has called a “boo boo.” Even if the ailment is a minor one, the Steelers would be crazy to take anything but a cautious approach with the inside linebacker. Second-round pick Stephon Tuitt has created as much of a buzz at training camp as Shazier. He is likely to start at left defensive end. It will be interesting to see the different ways in which the Steelers deploy third-round pick Dri Archer, a running back/wide receiver/return specialist, and wide receiver Martavis Bryant, a fourth-round pick, has made his share of plays in practice. Now it’s time to see if the 6-foot-4, 211-pound speedster can transfer that to a game.

2. Justin Brown: Tomlin almost always sidesteps questions such as the one posed to him Thursday when the eighth-year coach was asked if any players have surprised him during camp. He mostly spoke in generalities but did mention Brown specifically. That added more confirmation that few, if any, players on the Steelers' roster have improved more since last season than Brown. The 2013 sixth-round pick spent all of last season on the Steelers’ practice squad but he stood out during offseason practices and has continued his strong play in camp. Brown has already displayed toughness, returning to practice one day after undergoing surgery to fix a broken nose. Tonight he gets to show how much he has improved in a game. Brown has the inside track to a roster spot at a crowded position but it is early. He will have to produce in preseason games to hold off players such as Derek Moye and Darrius Heyward-Bey if the Steelers keep only five wide receivers.

3. The long shots: A handful of undrafted free agents and players who signed futures contracts have flashed during camp. They include safety Jordan Dangerfield, guard/center Chris Elkins and outside linebacker Howard Jones. They will receive extensive playing time with the starters expected to receive only a limited number of snaps. I’m especially looking forward to watching Jones, who signed with the Steelers in May after starring at Shepherd University, a Division II school in West Virginia. He has played well in camp and may have the easiest path to the 53-man roster since the Steelers are not especially deep at outside linebacker.

I,m curious to see what Zumwalt can do.

Dri Archer is the player that I am most looking forward to watching tonight. If he can hold up physically (and that is a huge if) he could be a very nice weapon on offense.

Watching some of these games...hoping the Steelers don't commit as many penalties as some of these teams...flags everywhere.

Want to see Mike Mitchell play in this scheme with Troy and yearning to see some semblance of a pass rush.

I,m curious to see what Zumwalt can do.

Dude can bang heads but is WAY behind. ST only or practice squad material this year.

Ryan Shazier epitomizes the evolution of the Steelers linebacker corps: The rookie inside linebacker is fast, strong and smart.

So far, the only unanswered question about the team's No. 1 draft pick is his durability. He already has missed a few practice reps in training camp because of a series of aches and pains. He was laboring on his left side one day, then favoring his right the next.

Yet defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau can't wait to see Shazier in game action. He's convinced the Ohio State product is the real deal.

“Ohio State asked me to do a lot, so it's become easier to understand this defense,” Shazier said. “I'm doing what they ask me to do.

“I don't have a problem playing. I'll continue to do what I've done in the past. We talk about learning the defense from my eyes.”

LeBeau might have to wait to see how Shazier responds in an NFL game. Coach Mike Tomlin said a decision on Shazier's availability probably won't be made until shortly before Saturday night's preseason opener against the New York Giants at MetLife Stadium.

LeBeau, though, figures he has seen enough of his young linebackers to bolster his confidence in their abilities.

“They've been very much a pleasure for the whole coaching staff,” LeBeau said. “They know they've got a lot to learn, and they're very open to coaching.

“We don't know when, but we're expecting some pretty good things out of these guys. I don't want to overload their expectations.”

That might be too late. The expectations already are high for Shazier, Jarvis Jones, Jason Worilds and Vince Williams.

“(Shazier) has exceptional athletic ability,” LeBeau said. “I think he's going to be able to make a lot of plays for us.

“We're going to be fast there. We've got four fast guys there. We're coming along with some depth, and we're still looking to develop that.”

The young linebackers, under the tutelage of veteran Lawrence Timmons, still are learning the game. Yet unlike past years, they aren't afforded the opportunity to watch and learn. Instead, the classroom is the playing field.

“For years, the linebacker position has stood strong for this organization,” Jones said. “We're trying to build on that, but we have a lot of respect building to do here, and we have to put our foot down.”

“We know we have all the ability we need,” Worilds said. “We just have to put it all together.

“We all have speed and things that make all of us unique. The continuity of knowing where you're going to play has made a big difference. It's one thing to learn this position. It's another having to play it, and I've had to learn to play both outside positions.”

The Steelers' 55-31 loss to New England was a snapshot of the 2013 season, illustrating the need for athleticism at linebacker. A still-mending Rob Gronkowski had game highs of nine catches and 143 receiving yards.

“If we're not sound technique-wise, guys like Tom Brady will expose you,” Jones said. “We need to use our speed and quickness to blitz and bring a lot of pressure to make teams do the things they aren't comfortable with. The key is stopping the run because it will allow our athletes, especially the linebackers, to make some plays.”

Pittsburgh Steelers: Winners and losers from training camp

August 9, 2014 by Ryan Petrovich

Twitter2Facebook1GoogleRedditEmailPrint
With the Pittsburgh Steelers first preseason game tonight, all eyes will be on which players have made an impact during training camp while others will be looking for redemption. Here are the biggest winners and losers of Steelers’ training camp thus far.

Winners:

1. Vince Williams

A crowded roster of linebackers leaves players like Vince Williams to really turn some heads to secure a roster spot. He’s doing just that.

Williams saw some playing time last season, but never panned out to be a linebacker that could be of immediate use this season. Williams, however, has been making a statement at training camp. He’s been a force to be had during back-on-backers, including a scuffle with running back Le’Veon Bell.

He’s been described as a hard-hitting linebacker and has been making big-time plays as of late. It will be interesting to see if Williams can translate his training camp intensity to the playing field tonight.

2. Terrence Garvin

To stay on the linebacker trend, fellow linebacker Terrence Garvin has been another name tossed into the mix. While it seems likely he’ll be a successful special teams player, he’s still making a case for time on the defensive side of the ball.

A player who is “all around the ball” during team drills has a legitimate shot if he can continues his recent play. Garvin has been working at both inside and outside linebacker. This only helps his case as a more versatile player is of higher value than a player who only knows one position.

With the ability to line up on the inside and outside and contribute on special teams, Garvin has a lot of areas he could cover. He’s going to be a good special teams player and a solid back up for the linebacking corps.

3. Martavis Bryant

Martavis Bryant has got a lot of raw talent that has a lot of potential. He’s far from a well-groomed receiver, but he’s been red zone threat in camp.

When the Steelers drafted the former Clemson wide receiver, his height was a major turn on. He’s Plaxico Burress-like and no one is happier than Ben Roethlisberger. While he’s nowhere near Burress from a talent stand point just yet, he could still be a very valuable player for a team that struggled in red zone.

He may only see time in red zone situations, but if he’s the tall receiver Big Ben’s been craving then Roethlisberger may have a new favorite target inside the 20-yard line.

Losers:

1. Landry Jones

A third string quarterback isn’t that relevant, but what stands out about Landry Jones is the fact that the team spent a fourth round pick on him.

He was a wasted pick.

Jones will remain a third string quarterback for his entire career. There seems to be very little hope that he’ll pan out to be something special in the NFL. His struggles in training camp are very evident and it’s hard to swallow that he was taken so high in the 2013 draft.

2. Mike Adams

There were high hopes for Mike Adams, in fact, there’s still high hopes for the offensive lineman. But, he continues to disappoint.

The Steelers brought in Mike Munchak as the new offensive line coach and while he’s a tremendous pickup for the coaching staff, he’s not a miracle worker as some have made him out to be. Maybe it’s going to take time, but there’s no reason to believe (as of right now) that Adams is going to live up to his potential this season, maybe ever.

3. Chris Carter

Unlike Williams and Garvin, the large linebacking crowd hasn’t been kind to Chris Carter. He hasn’t stood out. His only chance of making this team may be on special teams.

With excellent play from Williams, Garvin and Sean Spence, Carter is fading into the background and unless a major statement is made, he’ll vanish completely.

Dri Archer is the player that I am most looking forward to watching tonight. If he can hold up physically (and that is a huge if) he could be a very nice weapon on offense.

Dri? Hmm doesn't ring a bell. What round did we select said player?

It took the Steelers two months to get their first victory last year after going 0-4 in the preseason and matching that mark to open the regular season.

While head coach Mike Tomlin doesn’t feel there is any carryover from one season to the next, he admits that a young team with a number of new starters can’t afford to sleepwalk its way through another exhibition games.

The preseason will begin tonight when the Steelers face the New York Giants (7:30 p.m. kickoff) at MetLife Stadium.

“I acknowledge that this group needs to start fast and play with a sense of urgency that’s required to win,” said Tomlin. “Those will be our intentions whenever we play, regardless of the circumstances.”

That sense of urgency wasn’t always evident early last season as the Steelers dealt with a number of injuries throughout the preseason that carried over into the start of the regular season.

The same issue could be occurring this year as rookie linebacker Ryan Shazier, the team’s top draft pick who is slated to start at inside linebacker, is unlikely to play today. Shazier has been dealing with a knee injury for the past week.

One man’s pain is another man’s opportunity, however. Steelers linebacker Sean Spence knows all about that.

Spence, a third-round draft pick in 2012, suffered a severe knee injury during a preseason game in his rookie season and has not played since. With Shazier likely out, Spence will not only see his first live game action against the Giants, he’ll do it as a member of the starting lineup.

“I appreciate them sticking with me, showing patience with me and showing faith and giving me a chance to comeback,” Spence said. “A lot of teams probably would have cut ties with me a long time ago, but this organization didn’t.”

While the preseason opener will be a chance for Spence to show he’s fully recovered from his knee injury, others will use the opportunity to make an impression on the coaching staff as they attempt to win a roster spot.

California University wide receiver C.J. Goodwin, who missed the opening week of training camp with a shoulder injury, is one of those players attempting to prove he belongs in the NFL.

“I’ve got to make a play and show them,” said Goodwin, a graduate of the Linsly School in Wheeling, W.Va., who works as a counselor at the Mel Blount Youth Home in Claysville. “The pressure is on. I feel like I should do good under pressure.”

But the bright lights of an NFL stadium and playing in front of a big crowd in a game that will be televised in one of the top TV markets in the country – as well as in the Pittsburgh area – has its challenges. Goodwin said the crowds at training camp at Saint Vincent College have been the largest he’s performed in front of.

“That should be fun, playing in front of all of those fans and with millions of people watching. That should be a good experience,” Goodwin said. “It motivates me.”

The guys battling for end-of-the-roster spots or slots on the practice squad such as Goodwin should see plenty of playing time in this game.

Tomlin, as has been the case in his previous seven seasons, doesn’t expect many of his starters to play deep into the first quarter, though certain players could see more playing time than others.

That means certain veterans such as quarterback Ben Roethlisberger or strong safety Troy Polamalu could make what will amount to cameo appearances.

“Our goal is to give these guys what we deem it is they need or what it is we need to see from them,” Tomlin said. “It will be different things for different people.”

Odds and end zones

As part of the NFL’s experimentation with point after attempts, all PAT kicks will have the 15-yard-line set as the line of scrimmage instead of the 2. Two-point conversions will still be placed at the 2. … With nose tackle Steve McLendon (concussion) not expected to play, rookie defensive lineman Stephon Tuitt, the team’s second-round draft pick, will start at defensive end. … Guard Ramon Foster sat out the past two days of practice with an undisclosed injury. If he does not play, first-year player Chris Hubbard would start in his place.

Unfortunately, Jacksonville is showing the Browns and Lions on NFL Network...

Guess I'll have to catch the game when it gets re-aired on the NFL Network.

Yeah I live in Jersey so luckily for once being in Giants and Jets territory will have some benefits. Get to watch it live. I hate the Giants and Jets.

I just paid the 14.99 and will hook up my ipad to my TV and watch it live. Less than 4.00 a game isn't that bad. I'm jonesing for some Steeler football.

The eagles games is on ESPN. This game is live, the Bills game is being broadcast the next day so im good.

No problem at all

I can't remember the last time I was this enthusiastic about the first preseason game. So many story lines to watch! One hour to go!
