This is a big game

That's the nature of the NFL right now. "Throw 'em in and see what we got". No development time. No luxury of being a game manager. Some of them swim and some of them sink. Of those that sink, you wonder what they might have become if they had been given some time to develop before throwing them to the wolves.
Some are showing themselves now. Look at what Geno is doing in Seattle. The right coach just makes a difference. Steelers have a suspect coaching staff, a suspect defense, a suspect running scheme.Just not the ideal situation for KP. What I like about Kenny is he just doesn't have the sink look to him. He is already showing blitz pick up capable. I think the kid will eventually figure it out, hopefully they give him the coaches sooner than later to give him that opportunity.

Maaaan, I'm reading an article right now citing the OL as one of the biggest impediments to KP's growth, Najee's stats, and basically the whole offense. I tend to agree a little. Our line sucks. They are inconsistent and often just flat-out overwhelmed. Ask yourself who is the best of the Steelers' O-linemen? Chuks? Cole? That says it all right there.
That said, I disagree with the article on the issue of the OL being a bigger factor than Canada. His schemes suck. His in-game play-calling sucks. You couldn't evaluate the job that the WR/RB and possibly the OL coaches are doing because the OC is just clueless about how to run an NFL-level offense. I would have liked to see them give playcalling responsibilities to Sullivan after the bye. If they had, he could have slowly fleshed out Canada's bullshit by slowly integrating some real plays; maybe even some slants, curls, posts ... ya know, middle-of-the-field stuff. As far as Canada's impact on KP, hard to tell since KP is not being asked to run a real NFL-level offense. smh

Cole is serviceable. I think his run blocking is decent and as a pass protector he is above average. Daniels probably is the Steelers best Olineman him or Chuks who is having an ok season. I think if the Steelers had a better LT it would do wonders for the overall unit. I think Moore would do better at G. His weakness seems to be the outside speed rush. But yeah Canada does nobody any favors. His kindergarten playbook isn't impressing anyone. At the least they team needs a new OC and DC. If they want to improve to being at least a winning team again those two things need to happen this offseason. Fail to upgrade either of those two areas we will be right back here next year with similar discussions.

I have conceded that we cannot be a contender every year. There are so many contributing factors that make that a fact other than "oh, the coaches all suck". This not an excuse - it is a fact.

Example - coaching cannot prevent TJ's injury in game one

Kenny, just play to the best of your abilities...

The coaching has been substandard for a while, even worse the decision making process isn't good enough to make up for it. Decisions as in how they stock the team - offseason choices. Injuries will happen. But this team is relatively healthy and they are still losing. Even in their ultra productive years they came up short. Not just short but lost in uncompetitive games. That is coaching 10 out of 10 times. BTW the playoffs shows itself to what teams are true contenders, something the Steelers haven't been in a long long time.

Sound thinking and thanks for all your great post(s) along the way.

We cannot grade Pickett ostly due to his lack of OC guidence and play calling. It's a set to fail ratio in that regards.

If Pickett comes out of this and makes something, he will be a very good keeper.

EXCELLENTpost slash and thank you for all your great ones along the way, appreciate them.

Tomlin's decisions on personal and draft have been questionable for quite some time. Add in the Need for weapons and if they don't know by now we can't help them attitudes, all contribute to how we got here.

**** if I was Tomlin I would have lobbied for Flores as a DC and a HC with prior offensive capable attributes. That would have been good moves. That is the decisions that would have positively impacted the team. I have said repetitively if you aren't an X and O guy bring them in. Sorry bad decision making just continue to hold this team down.

I'm totally on board with that and I'd go one step further and continue to bring in better each year. I'd start with all assistants as well, find top notch coaching to make my HC job easier.

Rooney would pay for coaching as long as the production is there. He isn't stupid and knows more than most here give hi credit for.

I agree on Cole and Daniels. Chuks has significantly regressed throughout the year as has Dan Moore. There's been some minor regression with the guards and steady play from Cole. That is all in terms of pass protection. I think the run blocking is okay on the interior and week on the outside.
Back to Chuks, he was playing out of his mind early in the season, so his drop off was steep. Here's a look at the starting five per PFF:

Top Line: Weeks 1-5 (5 games) Bottom Line: Weeks 6-11 (5 games)

Moore

2 sacks, 2 hits, 4 hurries, 8 pressures
3 sacks, 5 hits, 12 hurries, 20 pressures

Dotson
1 sack, 2 hits, 0 hurries, 3 pressures
3 sacks, 1 hit, 4 hurries, 8 pressures

Cole
1 sack, 1 hit, 6 hurries, 8 pressures
1 sack, 0 hits, 6 hurries, 7 pressures

Daniels
0 sacks, 1 hit, 3 hurries, 4 pressures
0 sacks, 2 hits, 7 hurries, 9 pressures

Okorafor
0 sacks, 0 hits, 10 hurries, 10 pressures
2 sacks, 2 hits, 13 hurries, 17 pressures

I see

yeah I guess we can say Chuks was doing well, now spotty. Shows the FA's as still being the best performers, and that left side as the weakest links. I would still make LT and LG as the needed upgrades. Perhaps Chuks will bounce back down the stretch, we'll see.

I wouldn't say the coaches all suck but list the ones that do not.
Canada Sucks
The oline coach sucks
Danny bubble gum sucks
And the team hasn't won a playoff game in what five years. They haven't had a serious contender since they lost to the Pats in the AFC. Most or all of that team is gone. Just let us know your shelf life on Tomlin Bermuda. Forever? Is he the Pope of the NFL?

Don't forget Austin he sucks almost as bad as Canada... almost.

I've given this answer before - personally I think he has two years left max...

The offensive coaching staff doesn't have recent pedigree. Basically the entire offensive staff was out of the NFL or hired from a well-below .500 team.

Big game for Steelers that have been getting slammed in the media world, need to be respectable on national TV.

They don't have to win, but there has to be some progress here. I'm getting passed the point of wins and losses. Of course I want victories, but they are out and draft doesn't hurt. But this is a coin toss game against a not great opponent where the coach got fired, but they seem to be trying harder with Saturday even though I think that was a BS play to hire him. They have to make steps forward. Particularly with KP.
I think we saw some progress from Pickett tonight. 20/28 tonight, including at least 4 dropped passes. You'd like to see him connect with Pickens for that TD or DJ make the TD catch, but it was a fourth quarter comeback and a game where you can say the offense did the job to win the game rather than rely solely on the defense.

Yepper. Smashed in the playoffs. The Steelers have been like a pro boxer who has been racking up wins against lower level fighters. They're feeling good. Then they fight Mike Tyson and get ******* smashed.

That's been this team for 12+ years

Agreed. Definitely something to build on. Took care of the ball. Still needs to use legs more. The concepts are still way more difficult then required. Take the DJ play. The guy does not have big inside leverage. When they show the replay there isn't anyone else inside the Colts logo. That has to be slant. It's picking cherries from the tree. No let's go back shoulder fade.
