This would be a no brainer - (Munchak thread-so you can quit posting this story)

You can instantly upgrade your offensive line. I know you have a guy but he gets paid his money. Or make a position. Run game coordinator.

If you look at the news reports Munchak wasn't expected back Feb 1. Steelers hire new oline coach Feb 15. 14 days to make a call. Now my guess is Tomlin might like Munchak but Munchaks blocking schemes might not fit Canada's playbook well. It's not always as simple as we make it out. There are plenty of articles ripping Munchak's Denver oline. He didn't suddenly become a bad coach.

O'Cananda is the biggest ? on the team. He needs to step up big time but then that may not be enough with this offensive college scheme he is trying to install. Last year showed NO, ABSOLUTELY NO indication of success. It isn't just the OL that was rookies & bad but the OC didn't do anything to help any of them. BEN bailed out more than the OC did.

O'Canada could have called plays that strengthened not weakened the players we had. No sense or reason for so many behind the chains passes that went nowhere. The opposition had him figured out.

Those are some reasons to why I question if his "system" will even work in the NFL. He needs to step up big time and be a hell of a lot more in sinc with what is happening on the field of play vs the play call.

O'Canada was credited with being able to make on the fly adjustments, scheme in game time plays to take advantage of the defense were all things said about him upon his arrival. He came up way short of his billing last year. This year best be different and I hope there is a plan B in Coach Tomlin's back pocket if need be.

Remember Coach Canada alienates his assistances and players at times, that's why he is up in the booth to a degree.

* There are those who subscribe to the thought that the offense was limited last year not only because of a bad offensive line, but because of an aging QB with declining skills. The QB WAS able to put together some solid drives at the end of games, but was there a game where he was solid from beginning to end?

O'Canada could have called plays that strengthened not weakened the players we had. No sense or reason for so many behind the chains passes that went nowhere. The opposition had him figured out.
* Those folks who say that part of the problem last year and in 2020 was an aging QB with declining skills may also point to the QB's not testing the middle of the field and say that there is a possibility that the behind the chains passes were frequently called because the QB needed to get the ball out quickly due to a terrible offensive line AND the QB's declining/non-existent mobility. The lack of mobility meaning he was not able to extend plays and cover up for a terrible Line like he was able to do in the past.

Those are some reasons to why I question if his "system" will even work in the NFL. He needs to step up big time and be a hell of a lot more in sinc with what is happening on the field of play vs the play call.

*"IF" we accept that the future HOF QB's skills were diminishing, AND that that was at least part of the problem with the Offense last year. And, we also accept that there was no way in hell they were going to bench the future HOF QB, then there is an argument to be made that the problems caused by having an aging QB with diminishing skills were part of the collective reasons the OC's ability to make adjustments was hampered (just like Oline ... and let's not forget bonehead receivers).

Now, all of that said, Canada has no excuses this year. He has young QBs. He has a veteran and a rookie with some mobility. He has a rookie that has familiarity with the offense he likes to run. He has an upgraded IOL. They went and got him two WRs in the draft. He has Naj and Freirmuth returning.
No excuses.
BTW, I am of the belief that many, most even, of Canada's problems last year were Canada related. The failure to just let the young and inexperienced OL block the guy in front of them. The failure to truly adjust his offense to Ben's strengths. The failure to involve Freirmuth more in the passing game. Canada.

Like i said before… there is an opening for a senior offensive assistant on the team… he would fit that kind of role until a position coach position opened up… id be fine with him teaching RBs about blocking and oline scheme theory too…

The Teryl Austin position of the offense. I completely agree with you.

Pat had 60 catches as a rookie on 79 targets. That’s pretty good for a rookie Steelers TE. For comparison, Heath Miller had 76 in his best season.

EXCELLENT POST SteelBuckeye and yes, I've heard all those statements and definitely want O'Canada to succeed but also know that I need a plan B in event of a repeat of last year. Maybe this year's team has the coggs needed and don't take a Cogg on the season.......................

(my son growing up use to say "I've got to take a Cogg" when going to the bathroom...........

Have you noticed how teams around the league are scheming their tight ends open? We didn't see that a lot with Canada's offense last year (iirc, and I may not since I'm getting old). It seems like I remember a whole lot of Muth's catches being of the type where Ben developed some trust in the rookie and started using him as a safety valve.

ADD - IN

It's a way more pass happy league then when HEATH was here. Our offense didn't use the TE near as much back then plus I think attempts are up on average (just educated visual guessing) 15 + per game.

HEATH was a complete tight end and to insinuate Friermuth is a better TE on this short of a career is insane. I hope Muuuuuth surpasses Miller in every catagory, just for the record.
