Thoughts on Khan's first draft?

I thought Khan and Co. did very well. At some point I had all four of the top picks in my mocks, so they were guys I liked and prospects that were highly rated by a lot of draft analysts. They capitalized on falling talent, focused on premium positions, and worked the draft board by making a couple of trades. I don't necessarily think this class is loaded with future All Pros, but definitely the potential is there for 3 good starters and at least one key contributor, if not more.

I feel like they didn't over think it. No head scratching picks in the first 4 and I don't have a clue of the guys after. All names bantered about here. Good moving up and then down and still getting great value. No one knows. But on paper very good.
Trice was possibly the highest rated player on the board. He has size and athleticism with injury issues pushing him down the board some. There's upside there and that's the best you can ask for that late. Anderson, who knows, but they need a backup center so now there is a young guy to compete with Green (who I hope has things finally click).

I'm impressed. A lot, actually.

You?

Very good. I wish we have a 5th and 6th round pick, but the pervious GM wasted those picks on players he cut.

Very, very good draft

Got a guy in the first we weren’t expected to get
Started the 2nd with a guy we could have taken in the first.
DT is a nice grab and a big boy! Couldnt have bitched if we took him earlier.
Washington … to trade down, knowing other teams were going to pass on him … just excellent. And he’s a great get.
I wanted Rush in the 4th, but no complaints on “keeping it in the family”
Last two guys, reading up on them - but good selections.

Good RAS mixed with a nasty demeanor. He will kick Green out the door. Way too early prediction...

I have heard a lot of chatter that Trice from Purdue might have to move to safety. Watching his film, he is good on-run support. 6'2" 205 lbs. Could be a good fit at the slot.

He was moved from S to CB where his strength is at press. My money is on he stays at outside corner if he sticks.

Overall grade: A, top 3 drafts of 2023

Main players
Broderick Jones: A - immediate starter
Joey Porter Jr.: B - starter by year 2, should see time in year one
Keeanu Benton: A - should be starting or see significant time in year 1
Darnell Washington: B - risk/reward pick. If his cleaned-out knee works out then he will be seeing significant time by year 2

Camp bodies
Nick Herbig: C - special teamer
Cory Trice Jr. - D - unless we are going to a mostly press coverage system or we move him back to safety

Things I would have done differently: I would have traded a pick to get Israel Abanikanda when he fell to the 5th.

-Jones should be a starter.
-Peezy Jr should be a starter and has a vet like Peterson to coach him up real time
-Big 0 is one that I am happy about. His size and athleticism should complement the short passing game well
-know nothing about the other picks other than reading about them. My interest is seeing how Herbig plays. Looks similar to Watt in rushing attack

I thin Kahn did a wonderful job. I also think keeping Colbert on last year held Kahn’s growth back to a degree.

VERY happy with this draft and yes Kahn had help, similar to Colbert had help as well Back then.

PS

Haven’t had time to see how we did in comparisonto other teams in our division.

Just wondering, how does a 7th rounder earn a D grade?

I think Omar and Andy did one hell of a job with this draft.
Trice in the seventh I think was really good value there. Saw where he was projected to go in the fourth.

Fair enough. Gotta be tough to get above a D grade then given Trice was about as good of a 7th-rounder you can get as the No. 142 on a consensus board and a top-100 prospect for at least six draft sites.
I don't hate the player. In a different system, I think he would be a fringe NFL player (special teams, dime) for years. It's also my only minor concern over Porter Jr.

I loved how they worked through the first and second day:
- moving up just a few spots to secure their man
- holding on to get their CB instead of rushing and repeating the burns fiasco. And let's be clear, I didn't want Porter Jr at 1.17, but at 1.32? I'm very pleased.
- getting a DL that can become a 3 down player but he is an immediate help against the run so he will see the field early.

Right at this point we are talking about OL, CB and DL with our first 3 picks? Can it get any better? Well yeah, they trade down and still get Darnell Washington (dont care about the minor injury, its worth the investment), who I wanted in pre draft at 2.49 if CB and OT were already addressed. I think the kid will be a serious difference in the running game and help Pickett a lot as a consequence, he is a dual threat without a doubt and I'm eager to see the 2 TE set nightmare he and Muth will be for opposing Defenses.

In the trade back we get a 4th round pick we had lost with the 1st round move so I'm happy and giddy but then they get Herbig which yo be completely honest I didn't like there. I mean the kid has a motor and that's great but his size won't help him be a factor at edge so why draft him? You wanted an Edge guy? Get KJ Henry. You wanted an ILB ? Well there were Sewell if you wanted an old school type or Pappoe if you wanted a coverage LB. If neither convinced you then you could go l for WR Dontavion Wicks who I think was very good value there. You wanted to double at CB ? There was Rush ripe for the taking.
I just don't like Herbig, not for the player he is, but for being a tweener that won't make it as a rusher while there was a shitload of value at other positions. The couple of 7 rounders I guess I'm ok with.

Still after the great value taken in the first 3 rounds I won't be pissed for this pick but honestly it's what changes my grade from A+ to A-.

This was an excellent draft and Khan absolutely hit a HOME RUN for the Steelers. Excellent picks....everyone filled a need....I can see 5 possibly 6 guys contributing in some form to this team on Gameday which is almost unheard of. This is our best draft since 2017 and will possibly be even better over time. So excited for this season! The picks were great!
