Thoughts on this Quarterback class

FWIW, a couple weeks ago I saw Louis Riddick declare that Slough doesn’t get past the Steelers at 21.

Again, loved the guy as a late round pick... would tolerate him as a third... but come on.. a first for a guy soon to be 26? At least trade down into the second...

Why is that a problem? I'm not arguing their talent level with you...you know a lot more than me. If he isn't worthy of 21, then he isn't. But if he is, and it's just his age, why is that an issue? He should be at a higher level of maturity than most players in the draft, so that doesn't have to be worked through. Some of the Steelers best players are older, if you are going to do something with these guys, you better quit horsing around. An older, more mature QB stepping in there if need be should be a positive. And really, how old is 26 today? If he is a good player, he'll be playing into his late 30s. I think that settkes the immediate as well as the foreseeable future.

That's been my argument with him for awhile. While I don't think he's a first round guy, if you get 10 years from him...who cares right? Even if you "ONLY" get 8 years, that's tons better than what we have now...

At least to date, there really is no precedent for over 25 year old rookie QBs to ever work out...

Part of it is I think people are fooled by current NFL systems propping up NFL rookie qbs... it still takes 2 or 3 years for a rookie QB to really assimilate and understand nfl QB play... guys like Purdy and Stroud are good, but their early success was really system based... abd you saw some growing pains in later seasons after great early results... you always hear about guys ready to play right away, but at that position particularly, tgey really arent and you have to insulate them a lot...

An overage Rookie QB wont get the time to fully develop before he gets replaced cause when most guys are getting their second chances, he is aging out...

The second theory is the , you cant teach old dogs new tricks thing... an older qb cant easily change the techniques and things he learned to be a top college qb... so NFL coaches move on from them before they do adjust

The third is that overaged QBs in college years of experience and technique development can cover up mental and instinct inadequacies that are more pronounced in the NFL...

Whatever the reason is... save for a couple of non standard examples like Warren moon or kurt Warner, overage rookie qbs are almost always busts

Now past performance of completely different players certainly doesnt ensure how a new prospect will perform.. but the draft is a gamble, and you dont want to bet your largest asset on a historical very low percentage situation playing out.

I like that Shough was tge second best passer at the combine
I like that he showed he had more mobility and athleticism than they used in his college system...
I certainly don't think he is a sure thing by any measure.. and the age thing gives me pause.

I think if they are really sold this guy was going to be an exception to the rule, they still could trade down into the second and still get him...

Getting fat against players 3-6 years younger won’t work in the NFL.

They would need to throw in their 3rd to even talk to me, and even then, because they are a division rival... I make them overpay and get something next year too.
They could simply talk to the teams directly behind us then.

I don’t think the Steelers take a QB until the 4th or later. If the 26yr old fell to that, p[ukll the trigger.

I truely think the Steelers are looking to the ‘26 draft to make a QB statement.

If rogers don’t sign, the Steelers will find a vet type QB and day 3 draft.

As hard as we want the win now, the Steelers want to win, but I think the KFP taught them a little patience can be worth a long end game.

My only problem is Tomlin will get into the middle of Developement of ‘26 QB drafted and Arty 2 will extend him yet again.

I thought Coach Tomlin was gone the last two extensions contract, I can’t get my hopes up on the next. Groundhog Day from above…….

No frikkin' way. I'd break whatever device I'm watching the draft on if that happens!!!😤😤😤
But why? I understand the “not what I would have done”, but everyone is mostly wrong about the draft. Had the Patriots drafted Brady in the first round they would’ve been the laughing stock of the league, until they weren’t.

IMO, I don't think Slough is any better than Kenny.

I've said this in the past, "QBs that take 4 years to shine are either slow learners or in very bad systems". The latter is very uncommon.

Could I be wrong with this assessment? Definitely. When you look at the entire picture -

1. College team
2. Offensive scheme
3. WRs/RBs/TEs
4. NIL
5. QBs talent

Add that all up and hopefully you draft a capable NFL player, who will contribute when poop hits the fan...

Yeah, there’s a reason that I didn’t know who he was before this year and I’m not campaigning for him, just saying that I’ve been following the draft long enough to withhold immediate judgement.

Numbers were higher for Allar and Warren, I think he’s going to take a step back in 2025. Howard threw to studs, so did Ewers, Milroe, Fields, most top ranked QBs in any given draft. Burrow throw to Chase and Jefferson his last year. Only way to tease apart responsibility is to watch a lot of film.
Allar did not have a single NFL quality WR last year in my opinion. OSU took them all.

Now Gerry Dulac is reporting that the Steelers could draft a QB if there is a run on DL and RB in the first round. If that’s true, it’s a terrible strategy. I don’t necessarily want them to draft a QB at 1.21 but you don’t pass on an ostensible franchise QB because there are DL or RB available. They’re essentially giving equal value to all three positions.

It seems to me like they see the DL and RB group with a higher R1 value than the top QB crop .
Something probable like Harmon, nolen as R1a, so is Jeanty, then you have Omarion Hampton as R1b, same Grant, then you have the QBs as R1c (Sanders, Dart, milroe?, shough?)

Dulac is the guy the organization uses to disemminate misinformation, it’s why he’s wrong on almost everything. Hopefully he’s a witting mouthpiece, otherwise that’s pretty embarrassing.

I really don't see any of the QB's available as worthy of a 1st and worse drafting them there would put undue pressure on them like it did Kenny. They are more likely to succeed with the lower pressure and expectations of being drafted in a lower round and not having the stigma of being a first round savior. ALso We need a DL ine as much or more than we need a risky QB prospect in the first.

I agree, but do you see Tomlin passing on Sanders if he falls to 21?

If I’m drafting a QB in the first round, it’s because I think there’s a decent chance he’ll be a franchise QB and it doesn’t matter who else at any other position is available. QB is that much more important than any other position in the NFL. I don’t care if Travis Hunter is available, I’m taking what I think could be a franchise QB.

There will be a DL or RB the Steelers have 1st round grades on even if there is a run on them. Kiper actually has Sanders as the No. 1 QB in the draft. I also saw Dart go ahead of Sanders in a mock that had 3 QB's go before our pick at 21. If Sanders falls to 21, they will take him. I still think they will do something stupid and trade up for Sanders or even Dart.

I think if Sanders goes somewhere with a strong veteran locker room and an offensive head coach who can teach him how to be disciplined a pro and leader compared to the entitlement he’s been fed at Colorado (they just retired his number 4 months after he left going 13-12 over 2 years) he could prosper and be good/great.

Unfortunately if you drop him onto this team with leadership vacuum on the offensive side of the ball, 2 diva wide receivers, a run first style with heaves down the sidelines for a passing attack, and a porous offensive line it will become a total soap opera with Sanders, Metckalf, and Pickens racing to the microphone to throw each other and everyone else under the bus when the team stinks on offense again

You could lower that to 3 yrs and still be better…………….. Just sayiN

Pending on the Roger’s signing, even if he doesn’t, I don’t think we take a QB before the 4th.

Just a “gut full of BBQ’d chicken” and a feeling.

Just wanted to add

Kordell Siewert was a way way better QB of the two, to come out of Colorado.

Stewert’s career stats, overwhelming better in every category, yet his JERSEY isn’t retired……………
