A few years ago, I wrote a similar post about rooting to lose so they would fire Matt Canada after year 2. Everyone knew he was incompetent except Tomlin and the Steelers. The steelers won some games down the stretch, achieving the mythical non-losing season threshold and Matt Canada was retained. Of course they did. Everything was fine. They just needed to Steeler harder the next year!

That was all the proof needed that this team will make ZERO proactive moves. They are completely reactive and will only make a move when absolutely shamed into doing so. If this team avoids a losing record, Tomlin will be back and the media will call him a miracle worker, completely blaming the players.

Penn State finally ripped off the band aid and fired Franklin. There's turmoil now but that's OK. Even if they have to rebuild for a few years, they can still be on a new path that could lead to something better, instead of the old dead end. Steelers are in the same riverboat with Tomlin. It's clear that he is the limiting factor. Let him get a fresh start elsewhere.

I watch the steelers live with my heart, so in the moment, it's impossible to root against them. But before and after, when my brain is in charge, I have to root for the losses. The steelers need the wheels to come off completely. We're at that point now.

Start fresh with a new coach and the draft in Pittsburgh.

For as bad as things look right now, I'm not sure if the Steelers completely bottoming out is going to happen in the foreseeable future.

I suppose I need to actually see Tomlin have a losing season to believe it's even possible.

They could conceivably win the division, which would all but guarantee more Tomlin for awhile, IMO.

Winning the AFCN would by like winning the Superbowl with how low the bar has been set, especially in the eyes of Rooney.

I'm thinking Deuce wants Shades to get 200 wins with the Steelers. 11 more to go. He'll be here for a while longer.
Plus there is that little matter of $16 million a year for two more years.

Sadly, yes. Nothing will happen until the contract expires.
I think he definitely wants Tomlin to surpass Noll's win total at the very least.
Tomlin is 4 from tying, and 5 from breaking Noll's team wins record.

Tomlin ain't tying nor breaking that mark this year.
That much I do know.

Tomlin is not going anywhere until he is ready to move on.

If we have a losing season this year he'll still be back. I can hear the pearl grabbing, national press now if he's fired: The Steelers canned Mike Tomlin after a single losing season during his long tenured and storied career in Pittsburgh. What ingratitude!

Losing record. 7-10. or 8-9. Total disarray. Some guys on defense have already quit ... just going through the motions. Offense is a mess. Washington and Muth don't get the ball nearly enough. Play calling is a joke. Won't matter tho. Tomlin sticks.

The non-losing-season scenario has been question by national media. Steven A. Had a few words, Pat McAfee had a few words, and nothing was favorable of keeping him on for that reason.

I know how fickle the media can be, similar to Lunar’s 34 stone trailer park girlfriend, but even they can find common ground at times.

time will tell.

Well Sunday is pretty much a “must win” game, knowing how the Steelers show up in those sorts of games it’s safe to assume they lose.

I hear yaz Fiji, but it seems the team is becoming less and less responsive to our noted “Whisperer”.

Does anyone even care about that longevity record?

He’s 4 playoff wins behind Cowher, 8 playoff wins behind Noll, and 3 Super Bowl wins behind Noll. All three are more meaningful.

Tomlin’s legacy in Pittsburgh is changing by the year. His first decade, while it had some disappointing endings, was really good overall. The past decade is bad and the longer he hangs on, the worse it’s going to get.

Not at all, as far as coaches go, he's way behind those two as far as being a good coach, I don't care what numbers he ends up with.

Consider…. In his last 17 games he is 6-11! Thats a full season and it’s a losing one.
I will add this. I have never, ever heard of any coach in any sport where people say he will leave when he wants to leave. Who the **** is Mike Tomlin? He’s just an average coach that landed in the perfect spot with the perfect team at the perfect time. Crazy!

Stellar article from Ben Solak

A lot highlights the huge misses this offseason with the biggest moves.

TJ Watt - since 2022, get-off sent from 0.75 seconds -->0.79-->0.83-->0.87. Just massive as it was his best trait. Signing a pass rusher wasn't necessarily a bad idea, the price point was since he hasn't produced to the level of the contract. The business side of the game said they should've traded him.

Jalen Ramsey - he has shown he isn't the versatile player they hoped for. The problem is they signed him to a CB contract, not a safety contract for a guy his age.

DK Metcalf - Pickens is a more talented player and in this passing offense, it's really hard to judge this one fully. Metcalf is better than his production, but the Steelers also failed to maximize Pickens' value.

Aaron Rodgers - He started out the year as a QB who could win a playoff game, but hasn't performed to that level for the past 5-6 weeks. A telling stat is since 2011, Rodgers ranks 703 out of 713 QBs in air yards per attempt with 5.7.

The problem is, whether they admit it or not, the .500 record is meaningful and has become the goal. They do just enough during the offseason to reach this goal and it's holding the franchise back. They also need a QB, but options will be limited. Either way, they need to attack offense early in this draft and rebuild the defense with youth using the later picks.

Normally, I'd agree...it's the Rooney way. However, something is different. Chants to fire Tomlin and Booing renegade are tell tale signs that the natives are restless. But, how restless? About 40-45% of seats for the Monday Night game against the hapless Dolphins are available for sale. Now, Art Duece is looking at not only declining revenue, but His stadium will also be half empty and on display for the world to witness in prime-time programming. That is something Art Duece will not like one bit!

Wouldn’t you love to be that post game reporter in the locker room.
“ So Mike….your last 17 games you are 6-11. With the highest payroll in the history of the NFL on defense for the last 2 seasons. With your handpicked assistant coaches. How can you possibly justify your contract which is the 5th highest in all of professional sports in North America”
Follow up question. “ Do you have pictures of Art Rooney porking a sheep over in Ireland? Is this the reason for your longevity?”

The only thing Pittsburgh may hate more than non-losing seasons is primetime football games. My goodness I hope this is flexed to Sunday at 1:00 pm.

You could make the argument Canada was no worse than Fat slob Smith.
He had a worse QB and Warren was more effective in his system.

19 players have de committed from Penn State since Franklin was fired. Kids wanted to go play for Franklin.

With Aaron Rodgers and DK Metcalf it was never a secret they both wanted to play elsewhere as the first choice,
Tomlin was the last resort.

The only chance he is gone this offseason is if the fans in the stadium turn up the heat with the fire Tomlin chants even more than last Sunday.

Fire Tomlin chants need to happen at Penguins games like with Canada

I fear from Rooneys perspective the only thing that would force his hand is to continually embarrassed in his own stadium

I’ll always cheer for a win on game day, but if Derek Henry runs wild and consumes the soul of the defense like the last time they were in Baltimore or like the Bills did to them last week Tomlin will be walking into a hornets nest in Acrisure Monday night vs. the Dolphins- with alumni like Ben being honored at half time-it might be the perfect storm
