Tomlin…Believes risk of turnovers when throwing over the middle

So we will have a game where the O throws 40 times abd 5 are over the middle, all late in the game while behind... those 5 all go for big yardage... we get down to the 5 and run three times into a stacked D then try a fade to a outside corner...

And face 4 3rd abd really longs on D and give up a conversion or play close enough to go for it on 4th down against the same crap zones with no pass rush..

Punt on 4th and 1 from the opponents 45 while behind late in the 4th,

But we go for it on 4th and one from our own 39 in the first and botch it, and hear " well.. we dont live in our fears..." 🤦🏻‍♂️

“We don’t live in our fears, we live in our stupidity”

Home page article with this very thing written.

The more and more that is coming out is somewhat similar to the O’Canada events to being fired.

I could see this getting very VERY very bad and just possibly a mid-season firing by the Art 2.

Oh what a headline that would make. Cleveland embraces it’s fears and ____________________ (fill in the blank)

Sure...haha. Everything i type on here is done by phone, sometimes I miss something, send and move on..fugging touchscreen and big thumbs..lol.

How about an E?
Maybe they should line all the letters up around the edge of the screen to cut down on the intercepted mistypes...there are too many letters in the middle right now...🤣

You know... I still think the thing Haley revealed earlier this season about Tomlin telling him how many points to aim for to win the game is more damning than his anti middle of the field fetish...
it shows he is still caught in an era when you got ahead and trued to run out the clock, which in this day and age doesnt work because defenses are at a disadvantage when challenged so much... especially Tomlins D... that thing is not built to pressurecook teams, just hang on and hope for a turnover

This is thinking from 20 years ago before the rules were changed to favor offense and before coaches designed schemes to take advantage. There are now plenty of safe and easy throws over the middle.

Tomlin is even going safe on defense. Look at how far back he plays Minkah. Everything is designed to Not Lose rather than win.

Per Mark Kaboly, Tomlin has publicly made that statement. He believes that throwing over the middle is much too risky and leads to turnovers.
So there it is! Steelers offense ranked near the bottom now for several years.
That’s what playing not to lose means

Absolutely correct. We watch teams complete them against the Steelers over and over.

No wonder we saw guys running open in the middle of the field and none of Pickett, Trubisky, Fields or Russ would throw it. We blamed the QB repeatedly. The one game they threw over the middle with consistency they hung 44 on Cincinnati. Can't have that.

He must think every team thinks this way, because we're afraid to throw it there, and on defense we leave the middle wide open, probably defending the sidelines.
Like he was thinking "John Harbaugh would never allow Bert to flip a short pass to Ray Rice on a slant with Larry Foote in coverage. We're good!"
Or " Bellicheat will never use those seam routes against us because they are way too risky. We don't even need to get into man coverage on their TEs, slot receivers or 5th string guys running crossing routes."

BIG Truth in these words.!!!

It’s real evident while watching the game, even my blind eyes can see the lacking of ……well…….. everything.!!!

I didn’t see a Cowher or a Noll team avoid the middle like Tomlin does………….. They had a winning tradition (not a non-losing season tradition).

I guess it should be no surprise that for years now we've been hearing opponents players say they know what plays we are going to run. We have eliminated a third of the field.

I haven’t heard the “know what plays they are going to run”

But I have heard

“This is the easiest offense to defend” by many players over the years.

It’s been said about the defense as well.

Permission to make an analogy! This would be like telling Pirates pitching phenom Paul Skenes to not throw the ball in the strike zone for fear of hitters making contact.
No Paul, keep the ball high and tight or high and outside, or low and outside.
Pitching in the strike zone is bad Paul. You run the risk of hitters tagging you for hits.
This has to be the dumbest ******* statement Tomlin has ever made and this gets you 15 million per year. Art Rooney has no business running this franchise. Sorry boys but he doesn’t have a clue!

Well looking at the qbs he has trotted out the last 5 years he isn't really wrong. But why yalk about it.

And this is why our TE's are consistently under used. Sign Muth to the extension and barely throw to him despite him having elite measurables
Freiermuth is the 9th-highest paid tight end in the NFL at $12.1 million per year. He signed that extension right before the start of last season. That move truly makes no sense if Tomlin's goal is to avoid the middle of the field, and to me it illustrates a glaring disconnect between the head coach and front office. Why pay Freiermuth if you're not going to utilize his strengths? He's a decent blocker, but not even the best one on the team.

It could be a chicken or the egg kinda thing.
Shades knows his offense isn't very good so he plays conservative.
By playing conservative, his offense isn't very good.

The truly sad thing about Tomlin's Offense and Defense is that we as fans see the limitations and failures on both sides of the ball......for years now we have been calling it out. Now imagine what other coaches on opposing teams see?

Hey though......18 straight Tomlinships is what Rooney is all about.

I also think he plays this conservatives offense as if he came out with a more diverse offense, that would require in-game adjustments. That is something he has proven to lack in. He would lose some control as the rapid fire adjustments would leave him in the dust trying to keep up with them.
