Tomlin & Colbert pre-draft PC

Sorry, but at 1.15, you better get a starter in year one. If our systems are so complex that a 1st rounder can't come in and start then we have problems. 1.15 should start 75% of the time. Anything less and I have an issue with the pick and the guys making the pick.

I'm sorry, but if you put up an 8-8 or worse record the year before, then your 1st rounder should be a starter pick. Picking a player to "develop" with a 1st is STUPID. I will go so far as to say the first 40-50 picks should be starters, most won't be, but they should be EXPECTED to be.

I've said from the end of last year that nobody the Steelers select is going to start this year. HOFer Troy didn't start his first year. Their last #15 pick Timmons didn't start until his 3rd year. Because of injuries last year Williams started at IBL but he was so bad that Troy was basically playing it and they changed their defense entirely because of it. Jones started last year and he was clearly out of his depth.

I'm shocked Steelers fans don't know what the Steelers do. They filled their needs through cheap FAs and moving their own players into starting positions. Then they try to find BPA in the draft. The past few years they didn't do that and it has hurt them. Take the BPA and get the talent.

There are some unrealistic ideas fans have. A rookie should be able to come in and play in spot duty. If we fortunate to get a guy like a Pouncey or Miller who can start right away as a rookie that is the exception and not the norm. It won't hurt my feelings if whoever we draft at 1.15 isn't a starter from day 1, but I know that player will be given every chance to earn a starter's role and will eventually one day start.

It is not just the Steelers. I have looked at some drafts over the years, IIRC, I think it is about 30 players per draft that end up being starters and usually, your top 10-12 teams have 2 each with the 20-22 having one starter and the final 10 not getting a full time starter (as rookies). The bad teams start guys, good teams don't. And, not all of those starters are first round picks. Hell, we started Vince Williams last season. People fail to realize he started 11 games. He would be one of the 30.

But, people formulate opinions of what should happen and to them, it becomes their reality.

I would just be pleased if we select starter material in round one, player does not have to start day one but it would be nice if they develop enough to start year 2. Some positions are capable of starting year one, running back, wide receiver, possibly tight end and a few spots on the offensive line. As to defense, nose tackle and possibly some linebackers and defensive ends, but the Steelers have a defense that is very different than what the typical college players play even if they are the same position. A recent example is Jones, even though he played a similar position he was very ineffective with his play on the steelers defense. Changing the defense to make it simpler does not make it more effective it just makes it simpler.

I think Pouncey winning the starters' job in camp his rookie year spoiled a lot of Steelers fans.

What I meant is that the 1st rounder should be a player who will be a starter. I didn't mean that they need to start on opening day.

They should definitely be a starter, at some point, and I still feel any 1st rounder, especially in the top half of any draft should start 75% or more of the time in their first year. Teams have enough holes that they should easily be able to draft a 1st rounder that is better than the player they have filling in at one of those holes. Sure, they still have things to learn but put them in and let them learn it. Heck, you see rookie QB's thrown in their first year almost every year. If a QB can play his first year, then so should any other position player.

I agree eventually a 1st rounder must start but also he has to earn that spot. The majority of those QBs thrown to the fire as rookies are eventually burned as a consecuence, instead if they had time to learn under the wings of a coach and a mentor QB their odds of succeeding could've improved a lot

Colbert actually said that there were as many as 19 they liked. I think that may be a little telling. If they get to pick 15 and there were some surprises early, meaning 5-6 players are there they like, they may slide down. If not, expect them to use the 15th pick.

Also, Tomlin and Colbert stated that they do not expect a starter this year, hope they can contribute on special teams or sub-packages, but they are just young talented guys that have to prove they have the maturity, mental makeup, and other aspects to improve and help the team.

I have a problem with us not being able to find a starter at 1.15...

I dont see a position in the draft that if we take him he's a clear cut starter.

whomever we take at 1.15 will start, but prob in 2015. If it's a corner he will sit behind Ike.

This is what I think and I hope I am wrong. The Steelers are locked into a few guys, my thoughts are Odell Beckham Jr. and Darqueze Dennard but probably have their board made up with none of the top 4 QB's gone when they pick. So that means if 3-4 QB's go and both Beckham and Dennard are there and there's a few good CB's and WR's left they trade back. If not they take Dennard 1st or if he's gone (won't be) Beckham Jr. If both are there they try to trade down 1-5 spots and pick up some draft picks either this year or next. Then again at 16-20 take Dennard/Beckham Jr.

If we trade down and get picks and take either I would be a lot less upset as if we just take them at #15. But that's my educated guess.

For all this trade back talk, you have to have a dance partner. Who says they haven't tried to move back before, only to be told to piss off. Just because they pick in their spot doesn't mean they haven't tried.

Because they put the card in 3 secs after they are on the clock

Im pretty sure that the list of players that they will pick has evaporated. They dont see the value. Their guy is there and wont be there if they trade down. So what is there to wait for
