Tomlin "F- coaching grade" Post-Gazette

Some like him for: (in no particular order)

3. Scared who replaced him would do worse.

That one has never made sense to me, at all, ever, in any respect. Specifically, somebody out there is the worst coach on earth. Not only will he lose every game, but he does so while caught spying and losing draft picks and blowing up the salary cap on punters. So if a coach goes 0-17, I guess the team should keep him since "the replacement could be worse."

Meanwhile, other NFL teams win a SB and four years later, fire their coach and then go to another SB two years after that. The inane "we don't change coaches" mantra is great when Chuck Noll is the coach, not so good when an eminently mediocre coach is running the team.

#3 is very legitimate. The history of the league is littered with lousy coaches. There seems to be a real dissatisfaction among the fanbase or Art 2 as well. Is there confidence he would hire a better coach?
It's not, because there are a lot of great coaches, too. You do your due diligence and throw those dice. It happens a lot. Often successfully.

I disagree with that. There are not a lot. In the existence of the NFL, according to a stat I saw, there have been 518 coaches over those years. Only 28 are in the HOF. I'm not saying you need a HOF coach, but this idea that great ones grow on trees is not true. The Steelers still need to make a change, but the concern is absolutely legit.

Putting any blame on the defense for that debacle is nonsensical. THEY ARE ALWAYS ON THE GODDAMN FIELD. The offense had 59 yards in the first half. They had 15 yards passing. 15. After their only touchdown of the day (which was a 2-play "drive" capped by Warren's 74-yard run), they gained less than 10 yards on 5 out of their next 6 second-half possessions: 7 yards, punt. 7 yards, punt. 2 yards, punt. An amazing 13-play drive for a field goal. 9 yards, punt. 0 yards, punt. The Steelers finished the game with 77 yards passing. 77.

The defense held Cleveland to 259 yards on SEVENTY-THREE plays. That's 3.5 yards per play, man. But yeah, they got "smoked by a rookie," and it's THEIR fault.
The D came to play.
The Clowns got out of that rookie what you'd expect out of a rookie. Nothing more.

You interview everyone under the sun multiple times. Considering how long the Steelers keep coaches, it's a pretty big deal and great care should be taken to find the guy who fits

This is the old "Devil you know, vs. devil you don't know" problem. The issue I see is that we know Tomlin and what he brings. I'm not happy looking down the barrel of that gun for a few more years. Let's try a different devil. We my strike fire. We may strike out. Not a chance in 100,000 that he brings us a Lombardi again. So, next contestant, please.

I agree with that. We just all need to understand it is possible to do worse. Take the risk!

Is Tomlin the worst "great" HC of all time? I think so. Last time I checked he was like 24th all-time in playoff wins among head coaches. Yet because of his never had a losing season thing the networks put up graphics with him keeping company with Don Shula and Tom Landry and Bill Walsh and others. I think he's the biggest fraud in professional sports.

Tomlin's coaching inspiration:

The fact that the better RB continues to sit on the bench for a slow *** dude looking to hurdle everyone is bad enough. Then, our last drive they don't run once and set them up themselves to have time to drive down to kick the game winning FG. The coaching is incompetent. We've been lucky as Hell most of the season, this game, they gave away. Those talking about the defense need to read football for dummies already. The offense is the worst in the league. They can't win every game by themselves. And yes, losing major contributors matters.

It is the players. They play. It is also the coaches. It is not just one and not the other.

But, Topseed, I admit you have been right, I have been wrong. I have stated Tomlin is an outstanding coach. I have been wrong. There is a disconnect with Tomlin or something. He has become a lousy coach. This just abject refusal to acknowledge how bad things are...not by words, I could care less what he says, but by actions is baffling. It almost seems that he doesn't want to do this anymore or has gotten so comfortable it doesn't matter.

I have been right about one thing, though. It doesn't matter one iota what we think, which is why after they bumbled around for a few drives I went pheasant hunting. Sunday hunting in PA! After 45 years or more of missing beautiful Sunday afternoons because of Steeler football, the last few years the Steelers have cured me of having to watch them and be miserable. Hahaha. And I even missed the one pheasant I had a decent shot at.
Well, thanks for the admission. And it's good to know that there are still some pheasants wherever you live. Not many of 'em left here in eastern Pennsylvania.

Is this the first Pittsburgh or national reporter to put Tomlin firmly on the hot seat?

That was a must read, like a compilation of many critiques posted right here.

Well done DK!

PS I hope that you can still get full access to the team.

They are all stocked on state gamelands. I don't think there are any wild pheasants in PA anymore. I'm in eastern PA too, near Blue Marsh Lake. Lots of area there for stocked pheasants. Where I have had more success this year is the gamelands in Union County off of 45. The view while walking those fields is just fantastic.

That makes sense. I remember there were still many wild ones around when I was a kid in the seventies and early eighties.

The defense only gave up around 250 yrds and like 160 yrds passing. That is not being carved up. They only gave up 13 points and got a turnover. They were often put in bad spots due to Harvin's great punting and our own lack of offense.

All of the money is spent on the defense. There's absolutely nothing aggressive about the scheme they use. It's all passive.

They started getting blocked up pretty good in the pass rush weeks ago. And that's even with teams playing OL players just off the practice squad.

They should be wreaking havoc on a weekly basis, but of course they have them doing the same **** over and over. Then the back end design is to keep everything in front and tackle.

We should be seeing a bunch of 3&outs. Instead I see **** like 17 play drives vs some rookie scrub qb who didn't throw the ball past 10 yards.

The offense is running the ball with authority now. Whatever they've done to the qb is beyond me at this point. It's pretty clear he's mentally ****** right now.

Yet they choose to sit Warren on their last drive and throw it 3 times. Which is dumb vs that defense. They had smashed them all game long with the run.

All of it is dumb and this staff needs to go. All of them.

The whole thing is a waste of time and will never go anyplace great.

It's way every single year. That's even with the offense somewhat working well prior to Canada.

No need to worry since they will run the same **** until seasons end on both sides of the ball.

I'm sure if Kenny looks like crap again they may pull him for Mitch. Who will most likely give up a few ints. Then maybe Mason comes in so he can get his lumps too.

Then everyone can shut the **** up and see how this **** show is fatally flawed by design.

It's been over 10 years of the same **** good enough for .500 or slightly better, but not even close to what the elite teams are doing.
