Top Wr Addison being paid to transfer from Pitt

Yep and as a stand alone its fine, but combined with the transfer portal its not going to end well
I am fine with players getting compensated. The free-for-all approach we have now and what it could potentially grow into will kill the sport as a whole.

Teams aren’t allowed to do anything with NIL… they basically have to stay out of it. NILs are paid by outside parties with no direct connection to the school… Teams cant pay players to attend their school or pay them to stay
Yes I understand that but can a player use the name image and likeness of the school... If they do the school should get a cut of their money.

Yeah there seems to be a misconception that teams are paying players… that isn’t how it works. NILs are outside the team… the ncaa still forbids direct school officials from playing players
That is how I understand it... My point being if the school is not involved then the player should not use the NIL of the school to profit from without paying the school for it's use.

I don't believe a player can be in any school gear with any of the NIL deals involving advertising. I would assume this would also apply to paid charity appearances.

Yep… its always overkill when they correct an issue…

Players are going to be mercenaries now, playing in 5 cities in 5 years

I can't imagine any of these players are even worth any of these deals. Seriously, how is Jordan Addison worth $2 million to a sponsor? If it's from a booster and pay to play, it doesn't matter. I do wonder how long boosters will give away money to players without anything in return.

To be fair he was a bilitnikof winner, so that gets a little play

Who provides the W2, the booster?

Lump some tax on their earnings then? They have to pay taxes on income from their contract.
Sure but thats just declared income… ten years ago it was under the table lol… so its legal but instead of just shadily funneling a hundred grand to a player its going to be millions

It's ****** up... They need to get rid of this and get the portal set up to have open and closed periods.

Addison isn’t even in the transfer portal and is being recruited. The deal is reported above $2 million and while USC is the favorite, other teams are supposedly involved.

This will likely open the floodgates and college football will turn into MLB with big money teams using everyone else as a farm team. Unless some structural controls are out into place, a large group of college football should just break away from the 20-25 deep pocket schools and play in their own division on a level playing field with better structural rules in place.

That's exactly what is about to happen. You will have about 20 or so big money teams that buy up all the players. The rest will be a farm system. Pitt will be like the Pirates. Get a good prospect then watch him go play for the yankees or dodgers or wherever.

This is why Lincoln Riley jumped ship from Oklahoma to USC. He barely has to recruit now. The boosters checkbooks will do it.

As a Penn State fan this could be good for them as a big money program, but i hate it for the sport in general. ESPN loves this. They would love for there to be a Div 1 with about 30 teams, blow up the conferences and just go with a 30 teams league with regional divisions.

For once Harbaugh was right. He suggested the NCAA get in front of this and allow every player 1 transfer without sitting out a year. As it stands now you could see guys playing for 3 different schools. Start at Toledo, then go to Iowa State, then finish up at Texas or USC or wherever has an open starting spot and cash to offer.

As usual, the fools who have called for athletes to be paid are advocating a system that will do more harm than good. It's a fact that most schools do lose money on sports. They make it back on conference TV deals and in alumni donations. How long before the big conferences look to evict the bottom feeders?

Schools will start dropping various sports programs. That will mean that thousands of kids who would have gotten a scholarship will not get one and may not even end up going to college. Why? So the 2nd string point guard can afford a new iPhone, a Lexus, and a sleeve of tats.

What will be funny is these young kids getting a crash course in the reality of taxes.

That’s all it is now. Minor league system. The bottom schools do need to rip away like stated earlier in this thread

**** and fan, you whats about to happen.

This will help water-down NFL talent. Some of the college paid players will just retire before NFL due to why take the beating syndrone. Soe players may play first contract then quit nfl..

NFL has been raping college programs for a long time now, colleges get ZERO compensation for the training and prep work put into these athletes.

I don't have the answer but the NFL needs to pay as well, somewhere along the line.

I wouldn't go as far as saying they get zero compensation. The popularity of the sport, which the NFL is a huge part of, has helped create these massive TV contracts for schools.

Ultimately, if it continues to get more and more lopsided, then the smaller teams should break away. Look at a team like North Dakota State. They are a power of Div 3. They could go FBS level if they wanted and they'd probably do OK but not great. I bet their fans are much happier being Div 3.

There could come the day when teams like Pitt have to make the decision. Do they want to be farm teams for the handful of big money teams paying players, or do they want to form their own league where they can compete? I'm not picking on Pitt but they are the kind of big but not huge program that will have the most to lose. They can't keep up in an arms race.

How will this work out for a team like Notre Dame? Yes, they have money but they fancy themselves as being above the dirty game of recruiting. That's why Kelly left for LSU. He was shackled with recruiting. Boosters would no doubt pay for players, but will ND accept them? I bet they will once they start losing.

What about Stanford? Same boat as ND. They have a pile of cash but will they lower themselves?

Sure, these teams can compete now, but that's only with a few teams that are super teams. Right now most kids would rather start on a mid level team rather than be 3rd string on a big team. Not once they start getting paid. The talent pool will dry up fast. All the 5 and 4 star players will get paid by big teams. Then the 3 star that blows up as a fresh or soph will jump ship too.

The funny thing is this could actually hurt teams like Bama, and Ohio State. They've had the advantage of paying guys for years. Please let's not kid ourselves. Now that playing field will be leveled somewhat and they won't get quite as many top recruits in time.

I mean the thing about Bama and ohio state is that their biggest deep pockets actually serve on the board of trustees, and as such they cant get monetarily involved…

like ive said before, when a guy like phil knight jr who is a huge Oregon guy and the richest booster in the country decides to buy all tge star players off of the powerhouses like osu and bama that will cause change.. beyond his own private 20 billion, he could legitimately bring the full power of Nike into to the equation… and its going to get awfully corporate awfully quickly

When you have schools like Oregon with a nike corporate backing and a market like SoCal that can capitalize on entertainment ventures it’s going to take away from other programs regardless of conference. This will hurt teams like Alabama, Ohio st. I don’t know how it will affect Georgia.

UNLV should capitalize on this while they can
