I mean most years we are mediocre in like 5 or 6 special teams areas and bad at 1 or 2 , but there is at least one good area… this year we are mostly bottom half of the league everywhere… am I missing something this guy does? I mean we constantly keep what feels like a quarter of the roster specifically for special teams

I cannot. He doesnt totally suck and they are familiar with him?

I've come to the conclusion that Shades is pathologically averse to change and if people didn't leave on their own (or Dan Rooney insisted - Arians) he would never let go of anyone and keep the same staff for years and years and years.
Everyone he's hired (except Haley - Dan Rooney hire) was either 1) an internal promotion or 2) someone he knew (J. Peezy, Fictner, Canaduh, Flores).
Just like Deuce who would rather keep assistants who suck rather than pay them not to work, Shades would rather keep assistants who suck rather than have to break in someone new.

Been calling for the Bubble to pop, for a long time. STs Coach can be replaced in the middle of the season without missing a beat. It’s the easiest of specialties coaching to replace.

There are times when Danny Bubbles has had success, but overall he has struggled.

It seems we keep 2-4 STs “ace” on the roster which I feel is to many. I can see 1, maybe 2 if position need depth And gets to play, but not just STs play.

Who to replace him with, I don’t have the answer but there are a lot of up coming minds that could excell.

To many “Gaffs” in coaching current ST play to overlook.

I don't expect the ST coach to tell the kicker how to kick or the punter how to punt but for God's sake man, have some decent coverage on the returns.

BUT, I do expect the STs coach to have a contingency plan should the place kicker get knocked the **** out of a game.

Bubbles sent the punter out there being VERY obvious he has never practiced the attempted field goal. I highly doubt Harvin even practiced a game situation agains the FG defend STs.

There other STs coaching gaffs but that one was so obvious.

I mean we slot him an olb, rb, wr, ilb, and a cb specifically for special teams coverage, then he gets a P, K, and LS and Returner too… thats what… 9 spots plus sometimes there are others kept specifically for special teams… he is usually like 18th in the league in things… like if he was routinely in like the top twelve in most things then great… but he is a guy who just is super mediocre

I'm never a fan of the short kickoffs and the Steelers get so many holding or block in the back calls on returns. For a couple of seasons it got to the point I wanted to see a fair catch or kneel down on every punt or kick.
Last game we had 2 holding penalties on balls that were fair catches.

Our special teams sucks. I still have no clue why they continue to purposely have Boz kick short kickoffs when they always get past the 25 yet we never get past the 25 when we return a kick. He has the leg so just have him line-drive it deep into the endzone. They've done this for years. We just can't cover kickoffs at all.

Think you just nailed it!
Mediocre Mike loves mediocrity

Bubbles being “super mediocre” and the connection between the two seems so obvious

While we're at it, maybe someone can explain why Tomlin still has a job?

My pet peeves with the SP teams. Harvin was given the job without showing what he could do in all the pre season games. That was a blunder. And situational football. They have taken multiple holding penalties on fair catch plays. Ok if the opposition is punting inside their 20 and needs to boom it that is an opportunity for a return. In the action of trying to get a return you might hold. If its a situation where it is almost certain it will be skied for a Fair catch, dog him a bit, but under no circumstance do anything that could possibly be considered a hold. Let him go no worries.

If you ask most fans that love Mikey they'll say that those of us that want him gone are "casuals" ( I've been a fan since 76) and don't get the greatness of being the second coming of the 90s Bengals or the Browns of any era that is not the 1950s/60s. They're a little slow , but eventually they'll figure out the emperor has no clothes.....either that or they'll say you are a racist for not praising the emperors clothes, but you'll never win with them. When they get old they'll tell their grandkids about The Killer Bees and how great we were when we won....yeah.... nothing.

Well you better pray for a loss today and a complete melt down next year. Otherwise he is getting another contract almost certainly.
1. You don't fire a coach who's never had a losing season.
2. The Rooneys will never fire their Rooney Rule hire. Shades will be here as long as he want to be. If it's 20 more years it's 20 more years. I'm sure he hears the talk that he won his SB with Cowher's team and he can't build a championship team himself so dammit he'll be here until he's 85 years old if that's what it takes.

Agreed, but if you are not going to move on at least for God sake hire ace Coordinators. Spend the extra 3 or 4 million and get the best.

Danny Smith won't get fired cuz he's friends with Tomlin.

The answer to the Danny Smith question is simple: He keeps several Pittsburgh bubble gum distributors in business, he's vital to the local economy. If he is fired and moves away at least 20 people lose their jobs and two distribution warehouses close. "Nothing mystical about it" as Coach Cliche would say.

That is a great scenario of poor coaching. Yes these players should know that simple phase but, BIG BUT, coaches should be reminding and constantly up talking the phase / play needed. I don't think Bubbles and rest of coaching staff do that near enough. It shows on STs especially and that lays on the STs coach.

ALSO, the STs coach better know something about the technicalities of punting and place kicking. If he34 caqn't elevate the player than he needs an assistant that specialized and can. Harvin has a fixable field problem and our staff shoes consistently NOT being able to help him.
