Using stats over tge last five years and especially this year, can anyone explain why Danny Smith still has a job?

I think special teams have always been a bad spot even before Tomlin. I don't blame Smith for having Harvin out there or having Boz kick if he is not healthy. I am not sure if Smith was the coach when we had not 1, but 2 punters with bad hammies. I was willing to give Harvin a second chance, but he has been awful. Coverages / short kick offs and what not has to be a philosophy so i am guessing Tomlin signed off on them. The team definitely needs a shake up

That is a great scenario of poor coaching. Yes these players should know that simple phase but, BIG BUT, coaches should be reminding and constantly up talking the phase / play needed. I don't think Bubbles and rest of coaching staff do that near enough. It shows on STs especially and that lays on the STs coach.

ALSO, the STs coach better know something about the technicalities of punting and place kicking. If he34 caqn't elevate the player than he needs an assistant that specialized and can. Harvin has a fixable field problem and our staff shoes consistently NOT being able to help him.

The SP teams coach should meet with Captain and a couple guys and give specific instructions and reminders about the return or cover.

Good point. And to be clear I don't want another extension, but short of what I said, it is happening almost certainly.
History says the team would need a long term piss poor run like 85-91 to have them strong arm him enough to leave… people bring up 89 in that stretch, but tgey were 9-7 and needed a miracle at the end to get into the playoffs… don’t fool yourself… Noll read the writing on the wall.. he was going to be out really quick with another bad season and was going to have to restaff again to have any hope of staying in 92… so he walked away…

Cowher just had enough… he had a bad stretch in 98-00 but if you really break it down, tge teams lack of depth collapsed after a 7-4 start to 98… 99 was a mess trying to get kordell to run Gilbrides high concept offense, but they were 5-3 at one point… tge season failed dramatically because the oline was decimated by injuries Stryzeck and Dawson missed much of the season on IR… the only really decent guy was a second year faneca…
Then 2000 started out with 3 straight losses before a 9-4 finish… so really the worse stretch of Cowher’s career was a 6-18 record in 24 games stretched over 3 seasons…

his other two bad years were 2003, which was a mixture of youth at key positions and tons of stupid little injuries that curtailed it… that team was absolutely loaded though.. we would fire both coordinators after the season and go 15-1 the next year.
And of course he had 2006, where he actually just checked out mentally and did a victory lap season… Ben getting plowed over on his motorcycle didn’t help

The answer to the Danny Smith question is simple: He keeps several Pittsburgh bubble gum distributors in business, he's vital to the local economy. If he is fired and moves away at least 20 people lose their jobs and two distribution warehouses close. "Nothing mystical about it" as Coach Cliche would say.

We unwrap the layers as we see the game variances. Sometimes that variance requires disbursements through atmospheric bubbles of various sizes. That need of reputation require regulatory thoughts of keeping with the overall size of product readily available. A good place to store ammunition is in-between the cheek and gum, so to speak.

Agreed, but if you are not going to move on at least for God sake hire ace Coordinators. Spend the extra 3 or 4 million and get the best.
No. Deuce is cheap like his grandfather and doesn't have much left in the coaching budget after paying Shades his big money. Second, Shades doesn't want any assistants who are smarter than he his and will tell him he's wrong about stuff.
Shades is the third highest-paid head coach after Belicheat and Andy Reid.

I agree with most of that. Just not sure about the Tomlin and the smarter assistants. Brought Flores in? Totally agree with cheap part.

I heard he was top 5 at 11.5M .

I wonder when and who Dan 2.0 is, and his football overall knowledge is like. Does he have the "DRIVE" to be all that this team has stood for throughout his grandfather's time?

Flores is his bud and he knew him (see my post from yesterday). Austin needs to go so unless Flores gets a HC offer (doubtful this year) we'll see if Shades has the confidence to make him the DC and put Austin back in his old job of Quality Control Coordinator, which I guess means taste testing the food in the team cafeteria.

1. You don't fire a coach who's never had a losing season.
2. The Rooneys will never fire their Rooney Rule hire. Shades will be here as long as he want to be. If it's 20 more years it's 20 more years. I'm sure he hears the talk that he won his SB with Cowher's team and he can't build a championship team himself so dammit he'll be here until he's 85 years old if that's what it takes.
Which goes to show just how embarrassing this organization can be. We'll never be a SB champ again as long as this mindset continues. But hey, at least we're .500 and not dead last in our division, right?

If you ask most fans that love Mikey they'll say that those of us that want him gone are "casuals" ( I've been a fan since 76) and don't get the greatness of being the second coming of the 90s Bengals or the Browns of any era that is not the 1950s/60s. They're a little slow , but eventually they'll figure out the emperor has no clothes.....either that or they'll say you are a racist for not praising the emperors clothes, but you'll never win with them. When they get old they'll tell their grandkids about The Killer Bees and how great we were when we won....yeah.... nothing.
Yep. The only thing we were missing during the Killer Bees era was a head coach.

But then what would he troll about?
Riiight. Pointing out the reality of our situation is "trolling". I think it has more to do with everyone knowing that it's the truth and they just hate having it pointed out.

Yeah, I've already decided to leave the one Steelers FB group when the season is over. Never said I wanted Shades fired (ain't gonna happen anyway), never said he is a bad coach, I've said he is a good coach but not a great coach because great coaches win more than 3 playoff games in 11 years. For that I get called a racist because I'm white.

He has a job because of Tomlin.

Nothing changes u til cool shades goes bye bye

Exactly. I forget the exact stats as far as playoff wins, but it's something like 5-7 with Cowher's team and 3-10 once he turned the roster over. That's what the Kool Aid drinkers should be focused on: 3-10....with some of the most loaded teams in team history. NO ONE does less with more. Yet I get to hear now how he's "matched" Chuck Noll in victories just last week from the NFL bobble head-talking heads...GTFOH with that misleading garbage. Any other team would not have allowed that long of a run without producing anything of consequence. (Cue the posters who will tell us that's one of the things that make the Steelers different:stability) GTFOH with that garbage as well...we don't change coaches even when they don't produce jack for decades at a time....what a virtue to have. And you are right it has nothing to do with race, it's about results.

I once asked "How come nobody says that Chuck Noll won his Super Bowls with Bill Nixon's players?" and got nothing but crickets.
(Hint: There were only four players on the team in 1974 that were there before Chuck Noll was hired.)
Granted Noll and Cowher had some losing seasons but neither went as long as six years without a playoff win.

Exactly right. I live in an area where there are people from all over the US and no one ever tells me that they admire our "stability". I frequently hear how, "your ownership kind of screws you guys" or "Tomlin isn't a HC, he's a cheerleader".
