Another player has entered the 2019 NFL supplemental draft, and he’s a talented safety who has a good chance of being selected.

Jalen Thompson just learned yesterday that he has lost his NCAA eligibility and will be in the supplemental draft, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. It is unclear why Thompson is no longer eligible to play college football.

Some of the very early projections for the 2020 NFL draft had Thompson as a likely second-day pick, so it seems likely that some team would be willing to give up a 2020 pick to get him on the roster before training camp. Teams that select a player in the supplemental draft forfeit a pick in next year’s regular draft.

The NFL has not yet announced the date of the supplemental draft but it is usually in early July. Former Syracuse linebacker Shyheim Cullen, former junior college tight end Devonaire Clarington and former West Virginia wide receiver Marcus Simms are also in this year’s supplemental draft.

I know the Steelers usually are supplemental draft participants but with Thompson an unexpected entry, I think if he is there say round 5 or 6, I would hope the Steelers would consider. Could be a decent FS with ok height (6 foot), back end skills, and instincts. (6 INTs last two seasons)

Just how does this supplemental draft work, Never have heard a detailed explaination. Curious mind(s) want to know.

That's how the Browns got Bernie Kosar, who graduated early.

so does a team know before they actually select a player in the supplemental draft, WHICH draft pick they'll be losing in the following regular draft? or do they have a rough idea, at least?

It is like a three group collection/lottery based on record. But instead of say your pick coming up and you selecting, you submit which player you want in which round. This is the way I remember it. Not sure if it has been twerked recently or not.

Teams don't know if they get the player until Goodell informs them they won the selection. They lose whatever round they win. If they wanted said player in round five and they win that player, next year they lose a 5th. The process isn't a mandatory participation.

Why did he lose eligibility? He didn’t sign with an agent until the NCAA notified him he lost his eligibility? Weird.

If he is better than what is currently backing up the Starters, if the price isn't too high a 5th or lower and he wasn't booted for a character issue sure. But that is a lot of ifs.

I just saw it reported on Profootballtalk the other day, so I assume it was recently.

I see backup S and TE as the weakest depth on the team. Especially FS. To the point that I still would prefer a free agent FS brought in. Thompson would be the next best thing. At least he played the position in college,

Yeah...but normally that goes public if it’s scholarship related and the player gets an agent immediately. So, just thinking it’s something legal.

Good call.

In a strange and sudden turn of events, Washington State all-conference safety Jalen Thompson has lost his final year of eligibility with the Cougars due to a violation of NCAA rules and will get a jump-start on his professional career, entering the upcoming NFL supplemental draft.

According to a source for The Spokesman-Review, Thompson’s violation of NCAA rules stems from the purchase of an over-the-counter supplement at a local nutrition store, although the source made a point to emphasize it was not a steroid.

I watched his film, and he does not look like a day 2 starter this far out. I'd say he looks like a fringe 5-6-7rd guys at this point. I woudn't make a move for him.

Anyone know anything about that TE?

Good size height prospect, productive high school player. 48 catches for 916 yards and 11 touchdowns at Northland. But was an academic ineligible for Texas. Not worthy of a draft pick IMO.

Oh geez.....sometimes I wonder if these kids do boneheaded stuff like this on purpose. Why oh why would a player jeopardize his college eligibility without using the school’s trainers/nutritionists on any OTC supplement? Heck it’s practically a requirement at the next level, so why chance it?

If he wanted to go pro he could have just declared for the regular draft. This likely hurts his $$$ a lot

They just don't think. Perhaps looking for that edge not thinking. A lot of these millennials don't think or think too much. Doesn't seem like a lot in between.

But looking back I did a lot of stupid *** **** when I was young. But I have to give these kids credit they are taking stupid to all new heights.

Most of the players in the supplemental draft have drug issues or were declared academically ineligible. For the most part the player is facing a suspension and decided now is the time to go pro.

Here have been some good picks in the past. Here's the history of it.

Would like to see this guys workout numbers, and he will have to work out soon. His production was solid.

Nice post Coach and I see the STEELERS haven't picked anybody through the supplemental draft. This table of picks since the inception of it didn't show any PITTSBURGH STEELERS on it. I thought for sure we'd have at least elected one but I learn something new everyday.

As for Thompson,............ I'd risk a 56th but hope for a 7th.
PROVIDED everything checked out A+

He doesn’t have any workout numbers and won’t have any for all 32 teams to see before the Supp Draft occurs (July 10 last year). He is scheduled to workout for some teams individually (Seattle be most likely one for sure). He’s definitely going to have a lot of frequent flier miles for his agent in the next couple weeks.

If you think he's worth a 5th you basically have to bid a 4th cause our 5th gets trumped by 20ish teams. The order is kinda weird.

As far as us never picking anyone, historically we've been in or near the playoffs so there's a good chance we've gotten trumped on guys before. And a lot of those guys got tossed out of school and stuff which is typically not our style.
