What have you seen that makes you think Shamarko can take over for anyone? I see a decent ST player...but I have seen nothing in his defensive backfield play that makes me think he will be a starting caliber safety

GUT feeling, I think Sharknado, with more time / system, will be better than some here think. He has explasiveness amongs other things. Like Troy, he needs to NOT lead with his head.

Me too Lexx. I think he needs time in the system, not just to develope, but the routine / stability / team mtes like stuff. Lots can change with a year under your belt. I hope his next step forward is more of a leap.

I just think the kid gets hurt too much for my liking...hopefully, that changes...

Maybe we will be lucky and he will have the injuries out of his system so to speak for the rest of his time here. Timmons was injured early on if I remember correctly and since that time has been very durable since. Hopefully it can be the same for Thomas.

Ok let's look at this besides Porter/Woodley. Haggans, Foote were long time starters on pretty good defenses. Bell was DROY and dropped off after a couple of years. Timmons a starter since day one, possibly MVP of the defense with Heyward. Worlids had his moments, but he is gone after this year.

The last 3 drafts you can only consider Spence and Williams, who have been platooning solidly. Remember Spence is here by a miracle. Next year Jones has to jump considerablely and Shazier has to stay healthy. Zumwalt is unknown, but looks promising.

That's 9 players on the list of you don't count the last two drafts. 3 Pro Bowlers , should be 4. I say that's pretty solid. You can't hit home runs on every pick.

Have you looked at Kerrigans numbers? If I was satisfied with average, then the status quo would be fine.

Haggans? He 9 sacks just once in his career was best as a situational pass rusher.

Foote? OK player for a long time with 25 sacks for his career.

Bell? He has 1 good year and two below average years. Sure we remember a few splash plays here and there but he was not a good player overall.

Timmons? He is the best player on the least efficient D in the league. He is a good, but not great, player.

Jones? What potential? He is the least effective pass rusher in the NFL when he plays.

Shazier? Loved the pick but he cant stay healthy right now.

Spence? Seriously?

If Timmons is just good we haven't drafted a great one since Lambert. Jones "least effective in the nfl"? Seriously?

Timmons is a good player. Porter was better and Foote was more disciplined (although less talented). Woodley was also better until he got fat as hell. I like Timmons but lets not pretend he is an elite player.

Yes, Jones sucks *** based on his draft position. In 20 games he has 3 sacks.

And we do have a **** defense by any metric:

My response from another thread discussing Farrior and Kirk: "Considering what Kirkland and Farrior had in front of them, Timmons is pretty damn good. Would you put a DL of Tuitt, McClendon, Heyward at or above Joel Steed, prime Casey Hampton, prime Aaron Smith, prime Beard, Kimo, Ray Seals, Kevin Henry, Orpheus Roye, Brentson Buckner, Oliver Gibson, Nolan Harrison, etc.?"

Woodley was good when Harrison dominated the other side. Timmons would be better with a dominant NT, just like when Stabbit Ray suddenly improved when Ngata was in his prime.

Hope the fog cleared enough for you to see 94 yesterday.

Hell, I'd trade Jarvis Jones and a second rounder for Kerrigan.

Kerrigan might be the last player the redskins would trade. He would at least require our 1st and 2nd pick or two #1's,
2015 and 2016.

I'm beginning to wonder what the real deal with Thomas is about. Last week he had 2 solo tackles on ST's and was all over the field, in fact he has graded out on the plus side all season ( on ST's ) but almost never saw any playing time other teams....why ?

It's true that veteran Allen has played well enough at both safety spots to fill in but that's not helping the team access their backup talent. Oh, and by the way, Allen may fill in but he's not always as successful as conventional wisdom might assume.
Will Allen had the lowest grade on defense this week ( =2.2 ) according to PFF ...http://www.Invalid Link - Check SN ...s-harrison-receive-top-pff-marks-play-chiefs/

Something doesn't make sense, I don't know what it is but either Thomas sucks at safety or Tombert is sleeping with Allen on the QT. I'm no football personnel genius but I am seeing stuff that doesn't compute...It took all season to see that Tuit had more upside than Cam Thomas, we are playing into the post season with a superstar running back that has no backup other than a non performing, undersized scout teamer and a guy just snatched from the unemployment line. We have a trifecta mish mash of rotating ILBers and two two's at RT that add up to 0.

Anyway, back to Shamarka....WTF is his deal ?

Yup, he is a good player.

Timmons plays the run very well. He is probably the 3rd best defender against the run on the defense (Heyward #1, Harrison #2).

Yet he can also cover the TE, and frequently is assigned 1-on-1 coverage of the opposing TE. He gives up completions, yes, I get that, but he is usually right on the receiver's hip, and forces a perfect throw for a relatively short gain.

I understand that he was drafted as an OLB and was not suited for that role, and drafted pretty darn high, but he never comes off the field, and is a key reason why the Steelers rank 6th in the NFL in stopping the run.

And from what I have seen the past few weeks, the defense is getting better.
