No, "face guarding" itself is not a penalty in the NFL; the rule was changed, and it's no longer an illegal act. Instead, interference penalties require contact, so if a defender impedes a receiver's ability to catch the ball without physical contact, it is generally not a foul. However, if contact occurs while the defender is not playing the ball and significantly impedes the receiver, it can be flagged as pass interference.



Here's a breakdown of why face guarding is different from pass interference:

Neat fact... young olines often get better as the season goes on..... and running games get better as lines get better... so maybe what we saw in the Vikings game wasnt injury related

Hard to do a lot of that against a really good d line and the way they are playing the linebackers to take away the wheel and the crossers. They did run trips early and the misdirection stuff in the backfield is helping AR, but he is off today so far.
