For the rest of the season our best defense is a good offense.

Davis, Dupree, Spence, and Mitchell. Ugh.

To counter we need Haden back, and the Defensive Line to play better.

D was pretty good until Haden got hurt, then Shazier. Need those two, better play from Durpee which ain't happening, and a better safety than Mitchell, although he's taking less penalties than he used to.

Great thread. Love how you slipped Sean Davis in. Davis got beat deep and had a bit of a stupid penalty ( though he didnt know the ball was dropped in my opinion). He had a pick and some good tackles. Davis is not the problem. The problem is tge middle and Artie Burns.

We need to figure out how to get our best players on the field, whomever they may be. Dropping Hargrave into coverage is worse than all of the 2 DL sets we run. We drop Bud and Watt into coverage so much they only really rush the passer a handful of times a game. If we only have 2 DL in the game, who else (1 or 2 guys minimum) is rushing the passer if they are dropping into coverage?

I put Deebo in somewhere, somehow and get him more snaps so he can sharpen his axe heading into the playoffs. It is obvious he is needed for our pass rush and he can't do it by not playing all year and then get a few snaps hear and there. Put him in with Tuitt and Heyward if you are only going to have 2 DL. Then let Watt and Bud drop into coverage.

Somebody teach our DB's to stop biting on double moves and stop trying so hard. Let it come to you.

Even with the INT, that had to be the worst game of his career. He whiffed and missed a ton of tackles. Awful game.

The key is taking less penalties. It's ok to bend but not break.
As long as the secondary in particular can stay level headed they'll be ok.

The pass rush was somewhat there last night. Gotta give credit to Flacco and his receivers for getting open early

I think an extra week of preparation will help. With Ryan having been injured in the past and having to be replaced, I thought we would have more answers on defense. Was Lawrence Timmons that good? Is he still available?

Bench Burns, get Haden back. Defensive line better on run defense, to many 7,8, runs on first down.

Replace Jarvis Dupree. He ******* sucks. His stats????? One goddamn tackle last night. ONE!

Spence had just one...as the middle linebacker.

I agree, its time to play Chickillo or Harrison more if Bud's a non-factor

The interception was an early Christmas gift. Davis didn't even have to move, just catch the ball. Easier than fielding a punt.

The bald truth is without the pass rush, or Shazier's aid in coverage our safeties are exposed as the below average players they are.

Yes, lets rag on Spence who was with the club for all of 4-days. Come-on man!

Burns and Dupree are not playing up to their potential. I still have high hopes for both.
Sean Davis is a very good player, he just needs to learn better tackling technique and stop the Mike Mitchell act (stupid penalties).
Mike Mitchell SUCKS. Period.
Cody Sensabaugh Sucks. Period.

And why, why, why is Sean Spence playing instead of LJ Fort? I don't get the coaching staff's rationale.
The coaching staff thought that Sean Spence was not good enough to keep on your team. You cut him. See ya.
The coaching staff thought that LJ Fort was good enough to keep on the roster.
Shazier goes down, so who do you play? They guy you casted off? Or the guy you kept? If Sean Spence is the better choice, then why did you keep Fort? This mindset is mind boggling.

The same thing happened a few years ago with fumbling Fitz. I can't remember the scenario, or the players, but they brought in Fitz and did not play the RB that was on the roster.

That is true with even the best DB's and Safeties in the league. Give any QB enough time in the pocket and they will find an open receiver.

Do you HONESTLY believe Sensabaugh is better than Burns?

Kind of like asking if a sunburn is worse than a steam burn. But yes, Burns is slightly better than Senseless.

First our top payed players Tuitt and Heyward can't combine for one tackle. That was unthinkable going into this game. The DL has to be disruptive, and they were stonewalled by a 3rd string O line.

I really wanted Mitchell to make plays, he just doesn't. He sits back and is still 10 yards deeper than the deepest player catching a 25yd-35yd pass. Come up and make a play!

Sean Davis is boom or bust, but at least he booms. He led the team in tackles with 12. Sure he missed some tackles, and had coverage errors, but he also defended passes and made some big tackles around the LOS. I think he's got to adjust his game by figuring out how to play without Shazier in front of him. That will be tough on anyone.

Haden coming back will fix a lot of coverage issues with WRs. Burns will improve, and the Safeties will look better. I still think he's a week away from practicing, but I wouldn't mind being wrong here.

You guys also have to realize, we are missing our #1 and #2 ILB. Matakevich would be a big boost to this D. Instead we're playing our 3rd ILB Fort, a 4th ILB Moats, who is playing out of position, and a 5th ILB Spence who was a street FA who hasn't played in 13 weeks. If you don't have talent in the middle, don't expect results.

I'd like to put Watt in the middle, but with his effort on the edge, I'm now apprehensive about that thought. He has a limitless motor, and is crashing through the "rookie wall". You will never see Watt or JuJu hit it, because they are too well conditioned, and never take a play off. Great to watch.

Finally, I'm all for putting Harrison on the field in pass rush situations. Flip Watt and remove Bud. Couldn't hurt. But really this D starts with the DL and we have 2 players who should be playing up to their All pro contracts, and just aren't.

I agree Cope all this hollering about Dupree..WHERE THE **** IS TUITT.

The run D was exposed early in the season by Chicago, and I'm surprised more teams haven't dedicated to the run against the Steelers. The Packers and Ravens did, and nearly won those games. We all know what happened in the Jags game.

The only solution I see is to score a shitload of points and win TOP handily. Go offense!

We are who we are. There is no suddenly putting a a replacement capable for picking up where Shazier and Hayden left off. It don’t work that way boys. So you plug in your next man up and hope for the best.
First off Spence is not the answer. We have to hope Dirty Red can make it back and rotate him with Fort. That’s all we can do.
Next, we have to hope Hayden comes back and soon.
In the meantime you coach Burns and Davis up as much as possible and impress upon them they cannot take stupid penalties and to not play out of position.
Then you have to get more heat from your DLine and OLBers on the QB.
Most importantly, most importantly, keep your offense on the field as long as possible and score TDs in the red zone.

Well the good news, outside of Jacksonville I don't think there's another team in AFC that can just line and pound our defense like that.
The middle without Shazier isn't good vs the run or pass. We did start trying to adjust, we did some 3DL-2LB-6db sets, some 3-3-5's. I think we have to continue with that, and our DLine has to do something, I was more disappointed with them than any other group on D.
If we do happen to play another heavy run team, like I said in the game thread, go with 4 DLINEMEN and 3LBs.

Vs NE, that zone is definitely not going to work without Shazier, we need to let Sutton play alot, hope Haden has a shot, and go alot of man, and bring at least 4 after Brady.
