What is your state of the Steelers now!

I always try and stay positive about the Steelers for 1 main reason. I cant change 1 thing about how they run a business, I can just hope.

I just have to believe things will get better.

1 thing that is concerning is that we are so tight up against the Cap with a QB on a rookie contract. and the guy that was mostly responsible for cap moves for us, has Been promoted to GM.
That is scary.

I most certainly do hear what you are saying.

Some here (me inclusive) will vent upon occasion and that’s just it and done. OVERALL, I am very positive and keep my STEELERS close. I try to look at the good but also discuss how I see it all wrapped up in one. Sometime I might even know what I’m talking about…………. :)

We got into bad cap in a hurry. Wasn’t it just last year we had a ton of room to spare and now all suddenly we are thin as scrubbed skin on a baby potato.

I used to always be positive too, until they repeatedly beat it out of me and then I left the denial stage that a return to glory was around a corner waiting to meet our beloved team.

Now I just take them for what they are a PC charitable for profit organization. As long as the bottom line comes out right there is absolutely zero need or desire by the ownership to change anything, and they won’t. Hopefully the next gen is better at football and takes over sooner rather than later cuz as a football team these guys have been stuck in neutral for too long.

If it acts like a duck and quacks like a duck…

Really has been that way for the past 15+ years. I feel that any person that finds their way to one of these forums is a super fan in their own orbit, but how many of us have lost our zeal for the team with Tomlin at the helm? Too many excuses, and too many mediocre results over the years. It became clear that the team is about way more than football and wins and losses which is not inherently a bad thing, but it's obvious they have a very socially progressive agenda first and foremost. But that's what the robber barons did when they had mined and extracted all of the natural and competitive success from their industries, they then started charitable foundations and it became more about legacy and PR. This inexorable shift largely started with Rooney getting in bed for the ambassadorship.

The irony is that a segment of fans will always say, "I don't want to mix politics with sports discussion!" But yet the team made it all about politics all the time.

I wouldn’t say I lost my zeal. I’m pretty numb with my pro sports team’s winning or losing.

Us fans place more value in the wins/losses than the players. That gives us something to look forward too. From a players standpoint I will take the bigger contract over a ring any day. Yeah winning a championship is a nice novelty, but that’s all it is. A novelty. It’s marketed to fans to tune in.

Some players do play the game for pride and will take a paycut to win. But the majority of these guys are staring down a very short career. Get as much $$$ as you can while you’re in.

I’ll always see it as that. To me it’s just entertainment. I know for many of you guys who grew up in the 60’s/70’s it means more. But from my perspective there is more to celebrate about Pittsburgh than just sports

Always keep in mind. The nfl is a multi billion dollar business. All 32 teams are marketable. Wins and losses aside. As long as fans tune in, merchandise sells, tv contracts, advertisements fork over $$$. It’s all just a big money making thing.

Just enjoy the games for whatever they mean to you

It's definitely sports entertainment and of course these days it's just one of the scores of entertainment options at a given time. Kind of like growing up you had three or four TV channels, and that was it. Or in baseball, you had "the game of the week" on Saturday that you got to watch. Desire operates on the economics of scarcity as is said. To your point we are numb, and probably oversaturated at that.

I think some of it is just growing up and "putting away childish things" also. Coupled with football not looking much like the product we saw in the 1970s and 1980s.

Agreed

He was a Cowher guy, and his time didn't end well with Cool Shades.

Several of “Cowher” guys’ times ended not well with shades……….

Even Troy had words on his way out, yes…. Troy.

We, as individuals, believe that we matter to the NFL, or at least the team we are fanatic about. In reality, we do not.
I can remember my Dad telling me that win or lose you still have to get up and go to work the next day. It took me a long time to completely understand that.
Just like Ford, or Budweiser or Apple, the NFL is a business and it's all about marketing to sell their product and make as much a profit as possible.
Why else would Roger Goodell still be commissioner, other than making $$$$ for the owners, it's certainly not because he's improving the game.

Exactly.

I learned this at a young age myself.

Now in a way I get it. It’s supposed to represent a community and society coming together. But it’s also a business where our emotions can be spent elsewhere to improve ourselves imo.

These guys left: Butler, Mitchell, Flores, olsavsky, Klem. I'd say a large part of the reason they left was that they were tired of being under tomlins thumb. Randy F and Haley never worked in nfl again after their stint with Tomlin. No room for upward career path .

Butler retired in his mid 60s.
John Mitchell is 71 and retired.
Flores got a promotion.
Olsavsky wasn't retained, so basically fired.
Klemm reportedly didn't get along with Canada.

I don't see a single one of those coaches having an issue with Tomlin.

To the public eye, you are right. None of us know what goes on behind closed doors or the individual’s thought process.

I think most were tired and moved on with their life’s work, choosing not to talk about their personal decision on leaving.

Some of them have been with the organization for a long time as well.
