What to do with Jarvis Jones if (by some miracle) he does not start.

Keith Butler hints that James Harrison might start over Jarvis Jones.

obviously .. the difference between deeboand jj , is the same there is between ben and gradowsky

If Jarvis doesn't crank it up this year then I wouldn't look for them to give him another contract and let him walk.

Jason Worilds v. 2.0. I hope he's not waiting for that big FA payday.

not sure he is even that

and I very seldom use the bust label

but he is on the end of that tree branch just dangling

and the first wind that comes around

down

There is always the third option as a possibility with Jarvis. He may not be a great player that will become a star in the league. He may be better than a bust and become a guy that is a good back up and depth player that was just chosen too high. If that is the case he would likely still be kept as he has value to the team and his contract would reflect that and likely be cap friendly. I suspect being a superstar is not the only option for him to get a second contract.

I don't think anyone here would use this word in the same sentence with JJ.

we do keep trolls for depth, from time to time

I do not believe he will be a superstar either but at this point he might be the journeyman type of player that is likely better than a lot of depth players one drafts. He could stay by being better than some players on the 53 for a second contract. Not a bust per say but very much drafted too soon. At that point do you keep just a guy that you know and knows your defense or do you pick up a guy and teach him the stuff JJ should already know. So far many of us have seen less from jj than was expected and the bust label was an easy one to apply.

I think we are jumping the gun a bit here. Let 'em play some preseason games, for **** sake. Don't draw conclusions on some guy writing what he thinks he sees at practice. Do you realize those guys from SD could be anyone of us? So my buddy and I could get our lawn chairs and a few beers, go to practice and write up our thoughts. IF we are computer savvy, we could make a nice website, and presto! people think we know something.

To me the positive here is Joey Porter. Porter isn't telling Jones what he wants to hear, but telling him the truth. So he is not being lied too. Maybe he doesn't have the talent or ability. But if he doesn't get it done with Porter, I don't think anyone will be able to say he wasn't coached right, or used right, or they were not up front with him or whatever. We will know for sure if he can play or not. More importantly, they will know for sure.

not sure Steeler fans are reading a article and jumping to a conclusion based off of it.

I think it the overall body of work to this date.

And what Jarvis has showed it little to nothing.

I realize he will still get chances, and if he manages to turn it around great.

But nobody will be shocked at this point if he doesn't.

Bob Labriola and Ed Bouchette on Jarvis Jones. He's not winning one on one's.

The Pittsburgh Steelers need third-year linebacker Jarvis Jones to step up this season and live up to his first-round draft status, but by some accounts, Jones hasn't had the strongest training camp so far.

Steelers.com analyst Bob Labriola expressed some disappointment in Jones on Friday. Steelers Depot says Jones has been better in run defense than in the pass rush. Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette writes that Jones has lost his share of battles so far.

"Jones needs to get away from his own offensive teammates," Bouchette wrote (click here for more). "It was somewhat of a difficult first week in pads for the Steelers’ starting right outside linebacker, their first-round draft choice in 2013. By most accounts, Jones did not win many of the duels in the popular backs-on-backers drills or when he lined up against such left tackles as Kelvin Beachum and Alejandro Villanueva."

Jones will get the chance to face somebody new on Sunday in the Hall of Fame Game against the Minnesota Vikings -- something he's looking forward to.

“Man, I’m excited to go against somebody else this Sunday,” Jones said, per Bouchette. “We’ve been banging a lot, and it kind of gets the same thing every day. Going against somebody else, you get to do a lot more different stuff than going against your teammates. Because practicing against your teammates every day, they pick up your habits and they kind of know what you’re going to do.”

Jones and the Steelers face the Vikings at 8 p.m. EST on Sunday.

>>>Jones had but one tackle last night vs the Vikings.

this deserves it's own thread because....?

Anybody know, if we lost him to free agency, would we be compensated a draft pick even if it's in the 3rd or 4th round?

he has two more years left on his contract

Two writers who cover the Steelers are saying it, not myself or you.

you already have a thread open about what if JJ doesn't start. It seems like the same stuff, don't you? You could also post it on the game thread as your final conclusion on the writer's report is

Yes he does. However because Jones has a low cap number he could be trade bait at a later date.

Doesn't answer his question. Could have gone in the other Jones thread.

he talks about losing him on FA, not trading him. That's why I say he still has two more years left.
Who knows what will he be worth in FA in two years? (probably a low vet payday if he doesn't improve) But the probable truth is that we will be lucky to get a 5th rounder if/when that happens.

Maybe it's because Beachum is pretty damn good in pass pro. And as you can see last nite so is Villanueva. Now flip that he has been good against the run. Something Beachum needs to improve. Should we cut Beachum cause he can't move Jones?? Like the article suggest sometimes you need to go against someone who doesn't know your game. These guys have going at it since May.

I agree. If we lose Jones in free agency, he's not going to command a high value. Compensatory picks are determined on what you lost vs. gained. Mostly agree, we would be lucky to get a 5th round pick for him if he leaves via free agency.

I also tend to think he's worth a 5th or 6th round pick if he was traded.

that's why it isn't worth to trade him, in the worst case you get a 6th, in the best case he improves and becomes a valuable asset
