Who is the QB for 2026 and beyond?

The way the 2025 season is going, I'm already thinking about 2026. Who the heck is going to be the QB?! The idea about how strong the QB draft class for 2026 was going to be is now exposed as a myth. The FA market will be barren. Trade for Mac Jones. Jameis Winston? Exciting! Tomlin back at the helm pumping his sage sunshine?! You know it.

But the biggest question is where is a young(ish) quarterback coming from and who is it going to be?

I hope they don't sign another aging retread.
Why not go with Howard or Skylar? Might as well see what they have in those two.

Right now they are in 1st place of the AFC North, protect that.

Should they fall out of contention, then work Will in knowing he hasn’t any experience and has only been running the scout team to practice.

Do NOT give Rudy 1st team snaps unless still in contention of post season play. Once & if eliminated from post season play, then you put Will in for rest of season. Rudy remains back up and Aaaa-Ron sits, NO playing for the non-losing season title.

If you are building this team for future success, that should be the strategy going forward, where-as if you are just after the Tomlinships………….. then you already know the Groundhog Day outcome.

The Steelers are right back in the playoff race following the Ravens loss last night. Watch us finish 8-9, win the division, then win a playoff game. That'd be wild.

I think this is a great time to look at QBs, particularly with big-time QBs playing in conference championship and CFP games. The problem is the Steelers are going to want to continue to build the roster with all those draft picks while still being in "contention" (aka above .500). There are not many options this year.

UFAs
Daniel Jones
- I'd assume he'll be back in Indy.
Marcus Mariota - Pure stopgap player.
Zach Wilson - He was real bad, but then again, played for the Jets. Can he be the next Darnold/Jones?
Joe Flacco - Let him complete the AFCN circuit.
Malik Willis - The Steelers showed interest in the draft cycle and Tomlin revisits these guys a lot. Willis looks better under LaFleur.

Soon-to-Be UFAs or Trade
Kyler Murray
- I'd pass, but this will be a topic of conversation for the media. I see him going to Vegas.
Justin Fields - I think he's been real bad there. The Steelers could run it back--they like to keep things the same.

Draft
The draft is tough because we don't know who is going to declare. As of today, Mendoza, Moore, and Simpson would be the top 3. I could also see the Steelers do something wild like take Sellers or Allar.

Try Howard next year. If he shows no promise, then go all in on the 2027 Draft and get Julian Sayin provided he enters, I think he may be a junior then.

Mac Jones is likely as good as any QB coming out in the draft.
He also signed a 2-year contract with the 49ers.

I think you go with some combination of a stopgap veteran and Howard, with the idea of getting Howard into the lineup. Now if another option becomes available between now and then my opinion will change.

This is easy. Aaron Rodgers.

Having said that; early on when we were winning and he looked like a young AR he hinted in several interviews thst he would be interested in being a Steeler next year.

I would imagine that is no longer a thought in his mind.

No chance Rodgers resigns with the Steelers.

When he saw it from the outside it looked good. Now that he’s living the Tomlin tornado in person and seeing just how poorly this team is coached I bet he leaves and tried to go back GB for a year.

His frustration watching on the sidelines speaks loud and clear

I agree if you choose a big and mobile but raw QB like Aller then sign mac Jones foe 2 years while he and Howard develop.

I think Kyler could work. He is a better version of fields. His main issue is he can't stay healthy. I would not pay 20 million+ for Kyler so not sure what the asking price would be. Mac Jones looked horrible with the Pats, but good with 49ers. I think he would look more like the Pats version in our offense. Winston is like jekyl and hyde, but I think he would at least attempt to sling it around. I'd be fine rolling with Howard, but we need a vet unless we get hands on X / Os coaches. So far no one in college has seemed like a can't miss guy. We could take a flyer on someone but at this point i would not sacrifice the draft to move up for someone

Trade tomlin for a first this year to the giants.
Take whomever you like with the Giants pick which probably is top 2, but wont be out of the top 5... or if you hate the qbs this year, trade for the giants pick, then trade down and get another first next year and sign a stopgap vet...

The NFL is all about Narratives. And the Steelers aren't going into 2026 with out theirs. Because they will win or come up short of another Tomlinship they will have to trade up for a QB in draft. And most unfortunately Tomlin will be highly involved.

Joe Flacco.
Complete the AC North quad-fecta.
Hey, if he's on our team then he can't beat us. That'll be Shades' thinking too.

I'm ok with anything to polish the turd if they actually take a qb in the draft. If they don't I don't want anything that will artificially increase wins to get 6, 7, 9 wins. Id rather roll the dice with Howard and hope you can save all the draft capital.

What would Tomlin do with the top talent……….???

Take that Rothlisberger kid when he came into the league. Cowher took him undefeated (13) games his rookie year. Gave him a Super Bowl his sophomore year.

The ONLY thing Cowher did Ben wrong was by retiring (not faulting Bill), in doing so he cost a strong potential of 2, but more likely 3 super bowls.

Is there anyone in their right state of mind that thinks Tomlin could even make a Super Bowl yet alone win it…… with his current coaching schematics and draft of talented players. Even the OLD players need talented youth mixed in, The team needs a non-grade-school scheme on both sides of the ball, to win a SB.

I’d fear the new talented QB would go to waste and ruined, similar to the last 1st round pick QB taken.

Obviously, new coach pick new QB.

Everything that Shades won, he won with the players and coaching staff he inherited.
The longer this goes on, the more obviously that is.

My biggest fear is they go for Kyler Murray, who should never play another down for Arizona. I never want to see anyone under 6’2” play QB. And preferably taller. Kyler is under 5’8. Always injured. No thanks.
Personally I would have taken the chance and pulled the trigger on Dart last draft. We could have had 2 young guns,Dart and Howard for the next 5 years, with Rodgers as their mentor. I believe that was a mistake.
The next draft is in Pittsburgh. You have to know they want to solve this QB issue.

If the Steelers lose the next 2 games against the Bills then Ravens, and their offense totally sucks,I’d like to see Howard start against the Dolphins, and continue the rest of the season. We simply have to see what he’s capable of.
