By Brandon J. Wallace SteelerNation.com Ok, ok. I know what you’re thinking. Eddie Jackson and Ha Ha Clinton-Dix of the newly revamped Chicago Bears… easy. Or maybe Derwin James and Jaylen Watkins of the Los Angeles Chargers? Jamal Adams and Marcus Maye (New York Jets), Harrison Smith and Anthony Harris (Minnesota Vikings)… the top predictions […]

Edmunds and Sean "dogshit" Davis, best safety tandem league-wide?

Stop it. What a preposterous notion.

OP did make some good arguments for. Both are young in the D. I would think both are capable of improvement.

I wonder where Coach is on this ??? The article does have some interesting angles to consider and I'm all for it !!!!!!!!!!! We could use the "best in the league" players to make our "D" a factor again and we have that potential to do so sooner than later. Article says top "10" defense in 2018, some here act as if that's a terrible defense...................

Here's to a better 2019 and best saftey tandem in the league !!!!!!!!

Davis sucks.

I'd be happy if they became top 10 safety tandem, saying both are talented enought to be in the top of the league is a big reach , especially with monsters like Derwin James tearing O's apart

Davis sucks.

Coach must have PM’d and paid you to post that for him. Backend defense focus last year was to decrease long plays. Better communication reduced big plays by half from 2017. With two new starters (one rookie).

I'll be interested to see who they keep for the backups. Dangerfield had been hanging around since 2014/15,, and he is still here. Udfa. Now they Are bringing in many it seems to replace him . FA's etc. I'm gonna laugh my *** off come 31 Aug, if he is still on the roster.

Davis sucks.

Everybody is entitled to their opinion but I like to look at the glass as half full. He must not be as bad as you think and the season will play out regardless of what you think.

Allen from PSU in his 2nd year in the NFL will be one of the top safety backups and probably will be in the mix to see more playing time in certain schemes.

This is an argument about potential, and I understand that. Personally, Bush in the middle is going to give these safeties more opportunities to make plays while facing the ball. Just like Shazier made the defense more opportunistic with his athleticism, Bush will be doing the same thing and shrinking passing windows all over the field.

Sean Davis isn't bad. Isn't great either. Seems to be in the same camp as other Tomlin drafted defensive backs- they're poorly developed. Edmunds has good. I agree with Cope about Bush. He's going to help shore up that middle. Our secondary should be more solid than it has been in quite a few years. I don't expect it to be a 'no fly zone'. But the secondary has the potential to be a top 5 secondary in general. If the safety tandem and corners play average to above average with the way the front 7 can rush...this defense could be one of the best this season.

Not if the players aren't used properly.

Davis is a bum, drafted too early for his skill matrix. Has poor instincts and misses too many tackles.

If the pass rush in front of them put heat on the QB, they can make almost anyone look better. The big thing I see is that we need our zone D to be much tighter. If these guys are playing down in the box I don't think they will be as effective as if they play more traditional safety roles. Bush in the middle changes what we can do with the rest of the defense.

That 160 tackles hopefully comes down with the addition of a speedy MLB that should open up the safety’s from playing the oh **** he’s gotten past the front 7 better run downhill! To I’m gonna make a pick here. Safety’s shouldn’t lead the team in tackles and they both did because of poor LB play.

Davis is entering his 4th season, he had a whopping ONE interception last season. If you are going to be worth dipping sauce, you would do more in your 1st 3 seasons. Entering his 4th season
and we are still waiting for him to suddenly get good. If it hasn't happened yet, it's not going to. Wasted 2nd round pick. Could have taken Kevin Byard who has had 12 picks in the last 2 seasons.

Oh, but Colbert is the smartest man in the room, so we are told.

Booby this is his second year at FS. Despite what you think, he hasn't been a bust or a wasted pick.

Interceptions do not always tell the story as you well know. Or maybe you don't, anyways he just changed agents so apparently he is confident.

Steelers didn't bring in any FS competition worth a damn, so apparently they are confident.

Good enough for me as there isn't a close second option.

Ignorant comparison. Byard has played/started at FS since being drafted. So he has had the benefit of playing one position for 3 years. Davis has played a different position each year since being drafted with 2019 being his second year at FS.

As for Colbert being the smartest man in the room? In regards to player evaluations for the team’s scheme, he’s definite smarter than you or Belichick, who by the way has a lousy draft record.

Some day when the Steelers have better depth or free agency, Davis won't be starting as a Steeler. When that happens I predict more fans will say he sucked, missed too many tackles, made too few plays on the ball, etc...

And they will be right.

As for the decrease in long plays, the best one of the best pass rushes in the NFL, and playing a many weaker QB's sure helped.
