Why the Steelers should Keep 4 QBs

You just mentioned 99.9% of all career back ups that know that is what they are. You act there only a handful out there.

Sorry stillwright, I was talking about our Steelers nback-up QB, not the entire league.

As for all the other back-up QBs, I’m sure there are many just like Rudy, backups for a reason, yet nice guys as well.

They're bottom-third starters who haven't shown they can elevate a team. Both are examples why I would look to avoid undersized QBs in the draft.

Don’t need midgets, unless we are tossing them……………………

You seem to be equating 5'10" QBs with Sayin, who is said to be between 6'1" and 6'2". Caleb Williams, Baker Mayfield, Jalen Hurts are all 6'1". Jackson, Mahomes, Stafford, Prescott are all 6'2".

You can make other arguments why Sayin shouldn't be a top 5 pick, but being undersized is not among them. His comp is Drew Brees, someone is going to get a steal in the 10-20 range of the draft.

Re: the OP, I just don't see it with Howard. His upside is a taller Brock Purdy, so he really needs to be an elite distributor and has not shown that in limited action. Allar looks the part, I really hope we get to see him in a few games this year to get more info. Rather not burn a 1st on a QB next year if they think he can be the guy.

I hear yaz on the not wanting to, but I think we need to keep buying picks nonetheless we have the real deal.

That deal may end up being Allar, but until proven (in the coach’s eye) the search needs to continue.

A lot will depend on how the college football season and Steelers season plays out. If we're picking around 20 again and half of the "legendary" QB class falls flat on its face (which I think it will), I'd go BPA in the first.

I’d be surprised if another team didn’t put Howard on their active roster.
Eh, he didn't look that good in preseason. It's a risk worth taking.
I'm sure the Steelers would rather keep him since this is A-Aron's last year but at this point I think Howard is a JAG (Just A Guy) who is easily replaceable.

Ayahuasca A-ron rode pine for the first 3 seasons in GB, with Coach McCarthy taking over during that second season. Because McCarthy was known for his earlier work with Farve (rifle arm, lack of discipline), it would not surprise me at all to see either Allar or Howard at QB2 this season.
I'd think it's Allar, but I'm going to 100% trust that the Favre/Rodgers/Prescott guru is the absolute right guy to judge both pecking order and what is best for his hometown team going forward.

I do not recall much talent at QB2 behind Rodgers/Prescott, so I will not be surprised or disappointed if Rudy gets dealt for a late day 3 pick anytime up to the trade deadline.

Keeping 4 QBs is crazy unless they are doing it temporarily. Maybe you carry 4 QBs into week 1 because you think you can trade Rudolph or Howard, or you think it makes it more likely Howard makes it to the practice squad.

Other than that, there's no way they can carry 4 QBs without hurting depth. Anybody who watched preseason knows we need all the OL depth we can get, as well as WR.
I'm not sure keeping a sixth WR is going to address any depth issues if someone gets hurt. Those guys after the top 5 are not very good. This is where I wish they would've played Heidenreich more at WR as he maybe could've filled a dual role.

I'm not. I'll stand by undersized maybe maybe it's an inch, but my threshold for QBs would probably be 6'2". My other concern is his arm strength (I want a QB with a rocket arm), which is why I think his accuracy and processing speed will have to translate to the NFL.

He’d only have to have looked better than 1 of the 25 or so 3rd sting QBs in the league.

I suppose if Wetjen makes it, he'd be WR6. Is there any way they dress 6 WRs on gameday?

No one seemed to miss R Wilson last year, without Pittman, Bernard or WestJet.

Scotty Miller, Thielen and MVS all got hats ahead of him for most of the season. I hope that his TC has been career changing for him, but I'd take the under on his even being serviceable at WR3. I doubt he gets a hat most games, even if he makes the 53.

I get this and I don’t
They should likely keep 9 OL
I’d expect 6 receivers

But when the talent isn’t there in a WR room why just keep extra marginal players? That solves less problems than a 4th QB does imho.

DK, Pittman, Bernard, Wetjen, Wilson and Skowronek seem like the top prospects to make the roster.
I can’t see anyone beyond that remotely worthy of having a spot, and that is NO endorsement of Wilson cuz I don’t think he really has ever earned a spot…but I think they’ll keep him because as you pointed out there is a lack of talent in the room.

To me Wilson and Wertjen are redundant, and neither has done anything much to actually EARN a spot, simply an untalented bench and draft position make them the likely options to round out the room.

That's why i said temporarily. I can see keeping Howard over those scrub WRs initially, but I'm assuming the steelers will comb through waiver wires or make a trade for a vet. The Bills have Mecole Hardman. Maybe they cut him or trade him for a 7th rounder. He looks great compared to what the steelers have currently.

I’ve wanted them to bring in Mecole a couple times, the opportunity has been there more than once yet he was never even brought in to kick the tires.

Would love that move but don’t think he’s even on their radar

Most coaches like a veteran #2. If you trade Rudy then A-Aron's backups are Allar, a rookie, and Howard who was on IR last year and is essentially a rookie.
If I'm Big Mac I don't like the idea of two rookies backing up a 42 year-old starter.

here we are at the end of pre season and youre prognosticating that Roman Wilson will be a scratch on game days,,,,?

Not all of them, just most of them.

Hope I'm wrong and he has a great season.

Wasn't Howard in conclusion protocol after the bills game? You could milk some ontothe practice squad for awhile and make the decision later

Given where the Steelers typically draft, they might not be able to draft anyone with more potential than Allar in the near future.

Considering Allar's arm talent, the best option might be just to try to develop him over the next couple years, unless something extremely fortunate and unforeseen happens in terms of the draft.

Backup QB movement has begun:

Quinn Ewers from Miami to Jags for a 6th

Only if #5 and #6 are ST guys, which is usually what happens.
They're gonna play ST's and only come in as WR's if someone gets injured.

I’ve been waiting after rewatching. I was rooting for Howard. After watching both of them again from Thursdays game. To me-Howard seems more of the project than Allar. That’s my take. I would IR him for sure or just outright cut him. If he’s unsigned, bring him back to the PS. Keeping 4 makes no sense unless it’s Kordell Stewart in his prime as Slash.
