Will Kenny Pickett’s Hand Size Matter?

Vick was a fumble machine. That's how you beat him.

I don't want any part of Pickett and his carney hands. You also have to keep in mind the NFL football has a larger circumference than the college ball. It will be a factor. I'm 6' with 9 1/2" hands, and I was a heck of a receiver. I know my pump fake throwing is nearly non existent and baby hands Pickett will get exposed by teams with any ability of a pass rush.

His hands were 8' and had to do stretches to get to 8.5. He doesn't have Vick's mobility, and no other QB with hands 8.5" or less has amounted to anything in this league. He's not even on my draft board.

Let some other team waste a pick on him.

I don't have a draft board but I don't want him to be a STEELERS player either. It would set us back. Bottom line is his hands are to small for this league and IF i'm proven wrong I'll eat the crow (well done with Sweet Baby Ray's). I doubt it will be soon on the crow.

Salute the nation

Except for the deflated ones Brady preferred.

Hand size is an issue for a QB. It means you don't get as much velocity and you are more prone to fumbles. It also means you will likely struggle in weather games. College doesn't play nearly as many weather games. The regular season is over by Thanksgiving so even for northern teams, it's chilly but not really cold. The NFL plays far many more bad weather games than college.

Some teams may love Picket. If you want your offense to be based on timing and short passes then Picket will look good. But if you want to attack downfield you should look elsewhere.

While im not big on any qb this year, the hand size thing is grossly flawed… there is no correlation between hand size and fumbling… a solid hit on a football will dislodge it regardless of hand size ..

This is just another old metric that the nfl has used for decades with no real basis in its effectiveness…. Small hands can play a part in bad grip like small stature can lead to vision issues while making reads but it doesn’t necessarily correlate to it… you have to judge each case separately … too often a base metric becomes way too important in drafting guys or giving them a shot

Decastro had short arms, aaron Donald was just too short overall…

Yeah a metric can raise a red flag for further investigation but it should not be a reason to remove him from a draft board altogether.

This was the same knock on Burrows and its been a non issue there too…
Good point, but for Burrows, there is NFL precedent for QBs being successful with 9" hands. There are no pocket passers that were ever successful in the 8.5 range or smaller.

Also the official rules allow for a 1/2 inch variance in college football toward a smaller size:

The football used in NCAA contest can be slightly smaller than the Balls used in the NFL. The balls used in the NCAA also have 2 white stripes.

The NFL Rule :
The Ball must be a “Wilson,” hand selected, bearing the signature of the Commissioner
of the league,...
The ball shall be made up of an inflated (12 1/2 to 13 1/2 pounds) rubber bladder enclosed
in a pebble grained, leather case (natural tan color) without corrugations of any kind.
It shall have the form of a prolate spheroid and the size and weight shall be: long axis,
11 to 11 1/4 inches; long circumference, 28 to 28 1/2 inches; short circumference, 21
to 21 1/4 inches; weight, 14 to 15 ounces.

The NCAA Rule:
The ball shall meet the following specifications:
a. New or nearly new. (A nearly new ball is a ball that has not been altered and retains the properties and qualities of a new ball.)
b. Cover consisting of four panels of pebble-grained leather without corrugations other than seams.
c. One set of eight equally spaced lacings.
d. Natural tan color.
e. Two 1-inch white stripes that are three to three and one-quarter inches from the end of the ball and located only on the two panels adjacent to the laces.
f. Conforms to maximum and minimum dimensions and shape indicated in the accompanying diagram.
g. Inflated to the pressure of 12-1/2 to 13-1/2 pounds per square inch(psi).
h. Weight of 14 to 15 ounces. The short circumference is 20 3/4" to 21 1/4"
The long circumference is 27 3/4" to 28 1/2". The long axis is 10 7/8 to 11 7/16.

Theres a reason why those SEC teams perform better playing all their NOV games in the deep south. Much warmer down there.

I posted this in another thread. Picket would have to be very cognizant of his hand size and ball protection. He wears gloves already but had a ton of fumbles in college. That will get worse in the NFL with a bigger ball and stronger players going after the ball. He will need to learn to put 2 hands on the ball every time he starts to move around or scramble. Can he overcome the issue? Maybe. Only time will tell but some teams will put more emphasis on his hand size than others.

Does NOLA have a first rounder, could really see him being a dome QB with those tiny baby hands

Or a team just has to be content with the tiny baby hands fumbling more than any of the QBs who have actual man size hands

Pickett’s hand size is less of a concern than his tendency to run himself into pressure and lean on rolling out for many of his passes.
