The Steelers made a lot of interesting decisions on the defensive side of the ball yesterday. One of those was the decision to keep eight defensive lineman. Now there is a lot of potential at the tail end of the depth chart. There is also the factor of special teams play. We’ve seen Carlos Davis, and Henry Mondeaux excel on the coverage units. But the biggest reason may be the health and mental state of Stephon Tuitt.

Tuitt hasn’t practiced at all during training camp, or mini camp. He step brother was tragically murdered in a hit and run while his mother watched. That has obviously weighed on him, and his family. There is apparently another issue keeping Tuitt off the practice field though according to Mike Tomlin.

“I’ll give you guys an injury report next week on Banner, Tuitt and others that you’re going to ask about,” Tomlin said.

While Tomlin hasn’t said exactly what the injury is for Tuitt, Steelers beat writer for the Pittsburgh Post Gazette , Gerry Dulac is listing it as a knee injury.

Steelers considering putting Stephon Tuitt (knee) on injured reserve to start the season, which is why they kept 8 defensive linemen, one more than usual. Tuitt has not practiced this year.

We all know how Tomlin feels about practicing, and playing time. If you don’t practice during the week, you don’t play. There’s been very few exceptions to that rule. Now even if Tuitt practices next week is he going to be ready to play against the Buffalo Bills? Play maybe, but start? Not likely.

If the Steelers do place Tuitt on injured reserve he would only have to miss three games due to the new rules adopted last year due to COVID. The extra roster spot could help if they need to add another offensive lineman in case Zach Banner isn’t able to go Week 1.

Is there a limit to how many can return from IR? I am thinking no but thought I would ask anyways.

If this is anything like Dulac's prediction that TJ Watt will sign a huge extension immediately after the Panthers game, we can look forward to Tuitt being in the starting lineup in Buffalo.

Just read Dulac's chat and he said Tuitt has a knee injury from before camp? How the **** did he get injured if he's not practicing? If this is a lingering issue and he ends up needing surgery, that is just BS how it was hidden. I feel like we're dealing with the lying Biden administration. He said Tuitt will go on IR. I mentioned he should in another post so I guess there's our answer. The question then is how bad is his injury and if he will play at all this year.

It wasn't exactly hidden they just are not required to report it in training camp. There is enough bodies at the position. Steelers will be fine. More concerned about the two remaining weak spots. Corner and OT.

Tuitt was killing it last season. It's a big loss IMO.

From what he is capable of sure. But I think the bodies on the roster can hold the fort down until he returns. You put your best run stuffer in there and let others pass rush.

I hope so. With that news, I don't think it'd hurt to look for a savvy vet DL right now for depth.

Sure you would think Mond could be upgraded. Thing is I think this team lives and dies with how the Oline performs and how the corners hold up. If I was going to add bodies I would address them then look to the Dline.

this whole Tuitt situation is really wierd.

please , dont come with arm chair psychologist theories.

They put him on IR. And nobody has spoken about his injury.

He's dealing with the loss of his brother. He got injured somehow and no one knows to what extent. And, he is fat and out of shape. So......who knows how long he will be out, especially if his knee requires surgery. It will take him weeks to get back into football shape. My guess is he misses at least half the season and probably more. I believe this is year 3 or 4 now for him missing significant playing time. He has become very unreliable. I'd look to bring someone else in if they can.

We need a high round DE next draft

Definitely agree. Heyward is done in a year or two most likely and it would not surprise me if we cut Tuitt after this year. He is too unreliable and is costing us a ton. The dead money will suck but it really wouldn't surprise me if we do move on from him.

A bunch of those developmental des look good… you don’t need first rounders everywhere… tge first rounder needs to be a QB or stud olinemen… period

I forbid them from ever drafing another corner so thats out the door…

Totally agree here as OL (OT) is a big need, CB is also very big need...................... pick the poison because I don't think both will be addressed, least ways not with high mid-range skill. ONLY one will get the bigger upgrade.

Coach Tomlin couldn't do jack squattttttt until he had near all first rounders on "D"..................................... Just saying

I hear what you are saying and If possible trade for that proven CB even if for our 1st rnder similar to Minkah.

He didn't do jack squat recently until Tyson Alualu not only solidified, but straight-out supercharged the nose tackle position.

After so many years, i'm now convinced. the NOSE TACKLE position is the key to our 3-4 defense. ...as goes the nose...

I posted in another thread about Tuitt. He did apparently just have surgery on his knee. Hopefully, it was minor but he has a long way back with rehab and getting in shape. I still don't think we see him anytime before the middle of the year.
